I'm an ADC Trapper and it always amazes me how smart some critters are. Couple of suggestions if you don't mind some constructive observations. Fix the trap so it can't be moved, put 1/2" hardware cloth on the back 1/3 of the trap so the animal can't reach in, put boxes along each side so the animal can't see the bait except through the open door, create a food path with a few morsels into the trap, and finally afix the bait can it won't move. Great video!

That raccoon has had an encounter with a trap before. That's why it was refusing to go in and get the bait. You'd be surprised at how smart some of these animals are. I once had a house cat that could open a door to a room in house for instance. The cat would just get up on something near the door, put both paws on the door knob and turn the knob, then pull the door open. Never underestimate these animals intelligence.

Raccoons are incredibly intelligent. I'm assuming he did understand that you disconnected the garage door button, because once he pushed it the 1st time and it opened, he knew what it does. Once he pushed it the 2nd time, and nothing happened, he knew it wouldn't open again. Raccoons have this type of rational thinking. In fact, one can argue a raccoon is as capable at solving a problem as any human being. He may have also known to avoid the trap because a. he smelled human hands on the door when he sniffed, and b. he knew that it was a very odd contraption, placed their by humans, funneling him into a spot that leaves him only one escape route if he should get cornered.

he may have also been trapped in one before. And since people seem to trap and release into someone elses area making it someone elses problem, this is usually the case.

I'm certainly no raccoon expert, more of a raccoon idiot, never seen one for for real but I am extremely interested in finding out about raccoon intelligence. Some years ago when I discovered crows were this amazing species, well the corvid family really, solving problems far beyond what you'd expect something with a brain so small could do. Then of course the Octopus wowed us all more recently when it was found to have incredible intelligence, in fact its brain is practically its whole body. So are raccoons in this special category of animals that have managed to leap ahead of their rivals in intelligence? I must search to see if there are any studies.

LadySmartcat I think urbanizing homes on wildlife areas that are clearly meant for the wild animals is what's causing the animals to become a bit aggressive in their search for food, shelter, etc. It's not "someone else's problem, it's OUR problem.

I caught a racoon in a trap similar to that last night. I looked out around 1:30 AM and he was inside trap and the door was down. This morning, I went to retrieve the racoon and the cage was empty. These guys are smart. If you notice that you have trapped one, get to it immediately. Given time, they will find a way to escape!

Did anyone else notice that is not the same raccoon? Those are 2 different ones. The first is much smaller and thinner. The second is HUGE. Don't believe me? Pause it when there is a clear view of the second one, then go back to a frame that shows the first one, make the comparison! You have multiple smart raccoons in your garage my friend!! But the second one is much older as you can tell by size, and wiser. Thats why he he is smart enough to get the food and not the first raccoon :p

I just trapped a big one like this in my attic! They are very destructive!! It couldn’t find its way out and was trying to claw through my walls and my ceiling. Yuk! My neighbor put his trap in my attic. Fish and Game told me sardines work best and she was right. The next morning I heard the door snap shut. The raccoon put up a huge fight so I recommend waiting till the critter settles down cuz my raccoon tried to swipe at my neighbor’s hand through the cage. Also, wear heavy duty gloves. We took it to the river to release and it was happy, and me too! This whole process would’ve cost me $300-$500. I’m very thankful to my neighbor for his help.

Also wanted to add that the Fish & Game told me to cover the cage with a towel or blanket because they like dark areas and put it up against the wall because they feel more secure as if it’s going into a cave.

Another tip I discovered just last night. I failed to pin the trap down into the ground on both sides with stakes and the raccoon fought like hell and tipped the cage on it's side. This released the door stop on the top of the cage which is only held in place by gravity. So once the little door stop moved upwards (like when you are opening the cage) the door could be forced open and it allowed the coon to push open the door and escape. Lesson learned. I also wired a retaining strap to allow the cage door to be held open easily when baiting the trap (this just allows easier servicing without fighting with the door. Also allows you to set the trap off without the door going down while adjusting the trigger.

I was told by an old-timer at the local Ace hardware store: they are very smart; don’t ever “corner them” if you’re not a professional-always give them a way out; they carry diseases/roundworms/rabies; they are territorial; they love marshmallows ( /so maybe use that in your trap ). Fully grown, they are the size of a dog. They hate strobe lights and loud noises, but I used a loud radio and a CD of dogs barking and still could not run them off. Good luck.

What you didnt know to do was to cover the trap with towels to make it look like a cave and to use marshmallows dipped in peanut butter (irresistable!). Also, if outdoors this would avoid trapping a kitty cat by accident. The cover over the trap also makes him less scared and easier to remove/transport. You want any animal, incl. skunks (especially) to remain calm. The covering does that and it freaks them out less when they are trapped. Both racoons amd skunks love the marshmallow and peanut butter.

The second raccoon is a different raccoon. Look at the rings on the tails. The second raccoon has wider white rings and narrower dark rings than the first raccoon. Also, the second raccoon has a cluster of dark spots on his (her?) left rear, close to the tail. The first raccoon lacks these spots. Those traps must be fairly common, because both of those raccoons have definitely seen them before. This is a really interesting video. Thanks for shooting it and posting it!

Some suggestions. Put the bait on a magnetic dish and center it in the trap at the back. Secondly, block the three sides with plastic or other material attached to the cage itself to prevent them doing what you saw in this video. Thirdly, take some miniature marshmellows coated in peanut butter and set a trail leading into the cage and up to the bait. Thirdly, put a rod through the cage about 4 inches in front of the bait and 2 inches up forcing them to step over it and set off the trigger. Works 100% for me....8 nights, 7 raccoons

That was two different racoons. The last one was quite a bit larger. They are very smart. The only way I have been able to lure them into a trap like that is put the end with the food in a box that is just large enough to hold it. That way they can't get to the food through the wires. I've caught two that way and 4-5 possum's. Sometimes you can even just drape a large cloth over the end with the food in it.

another thing that you can try is to drape a large towel or burlap over the back end of the trap so the raccoons cannot see the food through the back or the sides of the trap. they have a keen sense of smell and they will eventually go inside the trap.they are smart and they constantly evolve, so we also have to evolve and keep one step ahead of them. relocating the trap and changing it's outside appearance also helps.

This proves how smart raccoons are. This Raccoon was probably caught in a cage before and wants no parts of it. People don't understand if you catch and release a raccoon too much they eventually catch on to you. This makes it harder to catch the next time. It can be very difficult to have a raccoon problem because if you have to put the animal down you are called a monster for doing so.

I just caught mine tonight after he eluded the trap twice, he's not a happy camper. He was jumping on my legs when I went out in the yard and dive bombing the cats, and I'm in the heart of the dense part of the city. I'm taking him out to a less populated area that is heavily wooded with a creek, he'll be much happier there and I'll be happier not having to worry about being ambushed in the yard, he's the only raccoon I ever had that did that, and I also won't have to deal with the lawnmower shed roof being used as a latrine. The Wildlife people said he may be use to people and was trying to get my attention to feed him by jumping on my legs and then running up the tree. I don't dislike raccoons, and would never harm them, they are very cleaver animals and can be very playful, but they don't belong in the city.. You should use marshmallows and stick one on the trap release plate assuring it will be tripped, mine eluded my trap twice.

They might say that the city took over their homeland. We always only think of ourselves being invaded by wildlife, when it's actually the opposite situation. So, they are smart enough to take advantage of our encroachment. Unfortunately, they are the ones that pay for it with displacement and, possibly death.

We live in a rural area. I have trapped raccoon in a couple of different traps, the Havahart being the best commercial humane trap I've used. I have had a less well constructed trap destroyed by raccoons, rebuilt and destroyed. But even the Havahart has had it's door damaged or ripped off twice. The strength raccoons have is a lot and large one can destroy exactly the model shown. If you successfully trap one , if you can, deal with the raccoon in it as quickly as you can, or , like in the garage door being opened, they will figure how to get out of the trap in many cases,

the first one could obviously feel the draft coming from the bottom of the door and realized it as an exit point. the raccoon is not lifting the weight of the door like you would think, its likely it has springs that balance the weight of the door. garage door openers do not lift the weight of the door, the springs, if properly matched weight wise to the door will balance the door halfway up so that very little force is required to lift the door, whether it be a garage door opener or a human lifting the door.

I understand that this video is old. But, I have the same trap. I used marshmallows (two) stuck to the upper corners of the back of the cage. This way, he has no choice but to come to the back of the cage to get the treat. For whatever reason, Raccoons seem to have a sugar habit and marshmallows seem to be it. In your video, the cat food in the can and the cage itself rattles too much. They're paranoid by nature and are nocturnal. All that light and rattling was a bad combination.

Raccoons are charming, very intelligent and as evidenced in this great video, they are comical. It was so funny to see her/his little face peer under the garage door casing the garage out, making sure it was clear, the raccoon wanted the food in the trap, but knew it was a trap. I have great respect for raccoons, many live in Vancouver, providing amusing entertainment, until they mischievously knock over a garbage bins, but it is humans responsibility to keep their bins secure with gd. lids.

Great video! Raccoons are incredible animals, intelligent, curious, and determined! As a wildlife rehabilitator I have had the privilege of raising orphans for release and caring for injured adults. Like most wild animals, they are usually only aggressive when they feel threatened. And sometimes an animal reacts aggressively out of fear because another human has attacked them previously. I have especially seen this in swans where stupid humans disturb and molest their nests. Think before you react, which is a broader life lesson! They have a right to be here too. And that doesn't mean they have a right to be here as long as it's not around your house. I often ask people who shout this, "have you ever considered what was there before your house was?" Wildlife habitat.

Also is it legal to feed them in your state? Be careful they are pet killers, and are very very smart to destroy properties like no other animals. they are little bears, and they will do whatever it takes to get the most out of you!

That second one is a smart successful older raccoon ... you can see he is healthy by that thick coat. he knows not to go into that trap too. It's funny that since he was not going to go into the trap that he stopped trying to get the food when the door slammed shut? What would have been the difference to him anyway?

Kudos to the raccoon. They are smart and beautiful. I have dealt with them even inside my home. There are ways to deal with mother nature without causing harm.

That was a smart, overgrown, steroid taking, masked rat. Cute though :D Funny seeing his nose just sticking under the door at the end. Really thought he'd get the food by rolling it down or something. Entertaining. Thanks for the post!

If you really want to trap a raccoon, line the bottom of the trap with newspaper, and drape something (a large towel, etc) over it. Raccoons are far too smart to walk into an obvious trap, but they like what looks like a cave.

the first raccoon escaped when he got the garage door open, the second came attracted by the cat food smell, and was bigger and very smart. :) i love how he got out at the end, but put his head back in to steal one last thing....video was soooo long we had to scroll ...

you need to have a lead in trail of food to lure them up to the dish inside..to modify the trap you can bolt the tin can to the solid metal floor plate in the center near the back .make sure the lenth of the bolt is short or it will bottom out on the floor when they feed from the dish the weight from the paws will successfully engage the trap. you may also want to place a heavy object on the trap to hold it in place raccoons know to knock the trap completly over to get the food. good luck.

I could be mistaken but I think that's a second, bigger Raccoon that re-enters the door! Compare a screen shot of the two and you'll see a difference in size & markings.

It’s funny how aware they are of the noise they make. Whenever he would make a really loud noise he would run to the door to get ready to run if he heard someone coming.

Try marshmallows with dollar store strawberry jam spooned over two marshmallows outside the trap then one the same with jam inside the trap. Works every time!!!

I love how the insurance companies and/or the people that put these things down and charge out the ass for the home owner to take it back to the "wild", do they really think animals are really stupid to go into them? I mean the younger animals, maybe, but wiser older ones, I highly doubt it. How would you trap a raccoon? I have a couple and well scared if they hurt me, my animals, or the neighborhood animals.

This video is a set-up, two diiferent Raccoons. First one is a female the second is an older male. That raccoon did not lift the door, someone on the outside did. The arm of the garage door opener locks the door in place, the Raccoon looked suprised when the door moved. That cage is too small, the Raccoon's back and tail will block the door from setting if he enters to feed. Helped my buddy for years in his animal control business. We would stake the trap next to a wall so the Raccoon couldn't flip the trap over and escape. Bigger traps and Peanut Butter can catch the whole Raccoon family in one night.

I think this is happening to us too. Did you ever get this resolved @8K Next? I'm assuming you wanted the raccoon out since you set up a cage. Someone made the comment to just leave them be, but we can't, they're pooping in our attic! Thanks so much for posting this video, I would love to know if you found a solution.

elftails m I heard noise in my attic ,investigated found fur at point of entre so I know where it is, in porch attic. I'll wait til it leaves and close up the entrance. I believe it lost it's mate because I found a big dead one this Spring and seen this one before trying to get in but I scared it off, now it 's back but it has to leave for water sometime. They can be annoying but I don't kill them just don't want em in my place. They are true survivalist and tough as nails.
