Heart breaking but I will grow everything inside my pool screen this fall. Fl is very hot and mice have not messed with my Okra. I but out bait each night to protect all my sweet potatoes. Totally fun to see your trail camera videos of the raccoon efforts to attack your veggies. I live on a 20 acre homestead here in Jackson, MS and have an over abundance of raccoons, along with dozens of other critters who enjoy eating in my organic garden if I let them. So it is a constant battle. One thing that works well for me is removal of as many of the pests as I can. Trapping is allowed in my state for 4 1/2 months out of the year, so I do trap raccoons, possums, and other pesky critters on my land. I don't actually set the traps inside my garden but do set a ring of them around the perimeter of my yard where the woods meets. Raccoons are very easy to trap. It is also legal to hunt raccoons for about 8 months of the year, so I sometimes do that too. Keeping the population density down really helps as they are not nearly as likely to venture into my garden when there is an abundance of natural foods with less competition in the woods. Same thing for possums, skunks, and other pests. It's pretty difficult to fence out a raccoon. Eventually if they want in bad enough they will resort to digging under your fences. Raccoons work as a team and if one manages to find a spot to get in, then they will show the others and even help them to get inside too. They are very smart critters but as I said, very easy to trap because they cannot resist free food. Cat food works extremely well in a "dog proof" trap. Note that these traps ARE NOT cat proof however so if your cat is allowed out at night, then bait the traps with marshmallows. Raccoons love them but cats won't eat them. At least my cat won't!

A suggestion: using flat thin metal sheeting, cut it in a triangle & big/wide enough that the edges extends beyond their reach. Attach one to each t-post. So the surface is to slick for them to get a grip, & it is too wide for them to catch the edge to boost themselves up. Don’t know if those metal bird spikes attached around the tops of the post would maybe help to deter them also. Just some thoughts. Do you have any suggestions on keeping squirrels out of. A. Garden?

I’ve heard of people who have what they call a “sacrificial garden” that’s an easier target than a fenced up anti-critter garden. The critters choose it instead of trying to get in the main garden and go on their way.

I have had my own raccoon problems. I tried havahart trapping, I tried discouraging them with air rifles. What worked was very simple: dog-proof traps baited with seafood flavored cat food, then dispatch with a .22 bolt. Relocating them just makes them someone else's problem: once a raccoon or any other nuisance has learned to predate on people, it will continue to do so. If you think I'm being harsh: I spent thousands putting a new roof on my house and in < 3 months raccoons had torn a hole in it. After I euthanized four of them, the problem was over. My humane/sublethal efforts had gone on for five years. I wish I had started trap/kill earlier.

How about set up tomato+whatever they like to eat stations a bit outside the gardens. If they are full, they will leave your garden alone, or eat much less inside. That is how I used to deal with squirrels and 3 giant fuyu persimmon trees. The birds pretty much stuck to the top but the squirrels would run along a block wall right next to the trees. The trees always had more than enough fruit but of course, the squirrels would take a nibble off of lots of fruit, which was annoying. So I put lots of ripe fruit along that fence and the squirrels rarely bothered climbing the trees. I think in the 10 years I did that, I only caught 1 squirrel in the tree. They used to run along the wall, sit and eat the persimmons I left for them, and run off to their much bigger street trees. I kind of have sacrificial plants, so you could try some sacrificial food. They seem to really like the tomatoes, so maybe put a few groupings of those along their route? I love your salads and how you process your food. Squeak is really enjoying the summer!

Just a thought or two - I've had better success with the black 1/2" bird netting - just working with it is a trial. Add another 8" to 10" piece of wood to the frame at the end to make it a upside down U shape and staple the netting on. I'm having a problem with chipmunks - I've got six Big Beef, Red Snapper and Celebrity plants loaded with one pound tomatoes - so far Chipmunks 12 - Angus 1 and with the heat spell they stopped blooming. I have Samantha (Sam) that is Squeaks double.

Racoons are about the smartest critters out there. I'm surprised they didn't make a trampoline out of that. However you're a genius. At least for now. Oops.. spoke too soon as I typed while watching where one got in. But it could still work. I think you need to try bright lights motion detectors or plant some outside the garden as sacrificial if this fails.

Get some chicken wire and cut a 3-4 foot long section, then cut that into long strips, if you cut across the middle of a circle on each side leaving the middle wire and you basically make a long spikey strip of barbed wire, then you the weave pieces threw your fencing where you see them climbing, Racoon's have strong but soft hands like us, they don't like touching pokey things, I also use solar motion lights they like the dark and don't care for being lit up by 10 spotlights blinding them. i also use a 2 stage fence system, Deer also do not like 2 stage fencing because the want a clear area over the fence to land when they jump , if a second fence is close within about 3 feet they think they can't land so they won't jump the first fence.

Hi Bubble Beat, I've been watching your videos for quite some time. We've had cattle for many years here in Australia n it's quite legal to have our cattle fences electrified to keep out the kangaroos, foxes n other predators, n keep our cattle in. The voltage isn't set to kill any animal, just shock it from its mischief from eating prime grass n hay meant for our animals. Why don't you wire your fence? It uses minimal electricity n you'll be devoid of this constant challenge which seems to have grown into a problem. Please do comment as your hobby farming laws could be very different to ours. Kindest regards, Gill 🦘
