I remember seeing a skunk with distemper rolling down a hill behind my house. It was so exhausted from the seizures that it passed out and looked dead. We told the Humane Society we thought it had expired, however when the officer touched it, the skunk suddenly woke up and tried to spray him. He said there was a major break-out of distemper in small animals with over twenty cases in the past month. Euthanizing is absolutely necessary to stop the further spread of the disease.

Seizures are scary but while mine were happening I wasn't conscious and before it happened, it felt like my body was getting pumped with electricity or something...like my whole body wanted to start rocking back and forth and then not present when I'd go into it...then I'd usually wake up with someone trying to shake me or slap me out of it...For Me the scariest part was losing that time I was unconscious...woke up on the floor with someone over me doing something to bring me back and it's scarier when that person looked scared...I feel so bad for these animals

Hello Rocky, and thanks for the video. I'm wondering whether this was definitively canine distemper, or whether it might be rabies. The symptoms can be extremely similar, requiring a veterinarian to differentiate. Do you know whether Animal Control obtained the diagnosis of a vet? Seems to me more likely they would just put it down.

It does seem that the raccoon is fully conscious of the seizures it is experiencing. Which explain the odd behavior of the animal and why some show "no fear" when threaten for they understand living will become ever more difficult as time passes with their affliction. Maybe they choose to "face danger" or uncommon experiences as a result of this realization. Whether these animals choose to fulfill an unapparent desire or seek out an interaction based from fear, depression, and/or anxiety I truly empathize their position of uncertainty in life as there body and mind continue to degrade until basic bodily functions become incapable of supporting life and death occurs.

Canine distemper (sometimes termed hardpad disease) is a viral disease that affects a wide variety of animal families, including domestic and wild species of dogs, coyotes, foxes, pandas, wolves, ferrets, skunks, raccoons, and large cats, as well as pinnipeds, some primates, and a variety of other species. It was long believed that animals in the family Felidae, including many species of large cat as well as domestic cats, were resistant to canine distemper, until some researchers reported the prevalence of CDV infection in large felids.[1] It is now known that both large Felidae and domestic cats can be infected, usually through close housing with dogs[1][2] or possibly blood transfusion from infected cats,[1] but such infections appear to be self-limiting and largely without symptoms.[2] Dog infected with canine distemper. Note the purulent nasal discharge and hyperkeratotic nose. In canines, distemper impacts several body systems, including the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts and the spinal cord and brain, with common symptoms that include high fever, eye inflammation and eye/nose discharge, labored breathing and coughing, vomiting and diarrhea, loss of appetite and lethargy, and hardening of nose and footpads. The viral infection can be accompanied by secondary bacterial infections and can present eventual serious neurological symptoms. Canine distemper is caused by a single-stranded RNA virus of the family Paramyxoviridae (the same family of the viruses that causes measles, mumps, and bronchiolitis in humans). The disease is highly contagious via inhalation.[3] Morbidity and mortality may vary greatly among animal species with up to 100% mortality in unvaccinated populations of ferrets. In domestic dogs, while the acute generalized form of distemper has a high mortality rate, disease duration and severity depends mainly on the animal's age and immune status and virulence of the infecting strain of the virus.[3][4] Despite extensive vaccination in many regions, it remains a major disease of dogs, and was the leading cause of infectious disease death in dogs, prior to a vaccine becoming available.[5]

I had a raccoon with distemper come to my back door at my old apt complex. It had greenish mucous in its eyes and coming out of its nose, showed no sign of fear (came to my back door, where my 75 lb black lab mix was barking and jumping at the door) and it stood up and put its front paws on the door and didn't back away at all. Nor was it afraid of a broom or a cattle prod (from my neighbor and on-site manager). It wouldn't even run away from people chasing it. It was thinner than most of the raccoons in the area and its coat was really unkempt. Neighbor finally got it chased off, even though I told him it was probably distemper and animal control should have been contacted, bc pretty much everyone had pets and it's highly contagious. Poor thing. 😔
