When I was 16 my buddy had a Dodge Polara with a 383 4 barrel. He put a rattle can paint job on it. All the owners of the shiny new cars laughed at us, until he opened up the secondaries and blew them away!!!

An ol' dog like me that lived during those days can still learn things never known-from you Steve! I once had a treasure of racing history-once. In '73 I bought one of Pettys '70s NASCAR dirt cars thinking I could use it on the 5/8s, half mile, 3/8s dirt tracks I was racing. That thing was built like a Mack truck, nearly twice as heavy as our class minimum weight limit. 1 week and it was shoved to the side of the lot and sold to the first one that gave me what I paid for it. I've in later years, wondered why I didn't stick it in one of our many farms empty buildings and still have it for nothing more than a show-off toy.

@@tonyfriend7413 No, it was just a RR. I did look over a brand new 3 year old bird in a small town dealership. The car dealership didn't even own the bird, it was brought from KC to see if it'd sell. I heard it went to the next county over and sat in a dealership there before moving on. I guess a forward thinking fella would of bought it and stashed it, but I wasn't one of those. Owned it I'd of ran it like it was made to run plus some.

Maybe I’m just different, but I’ve always loved the look of the 62’s, a 62 Savoy 2dr sedan in black is one of the most sinister looking cars I can imagine. I always get a laugh out of those two icons of Chevrolet, Strickler and Jenkins being known as The Dodge Boys! I’d like to see a nicely done T shirt with that artwork on it, just to be contrary.

I had a Plymouth Fury ,1963 ,Four door hardtop and a Dodge Phoenix which was Australian assembled and had a higher spec interior than the US versions .Another I had years ago was a '64 Dodge 330,RHD assembled in Canada for the New Zealand market. The Plymouth Fury had the same body as the Dodge but with different fenders and was built RHD(in Canada) and bought to Australia for the manager of Hertz rental cars. Regarding Max wedge engines, in 1964 a Genuine 1963 Max wedge car weas bought to Australia and raced on the strips (such as they were back then) with Ramcharger written on the sides. It had originally been raced in the US by a Californian dealer named Milne (from memory...) later in 64' another max wedge car came to Australia and was often pitted against the earlier car. 20 something years ago I was offered a 426 as a swap for my old toyota ute. 🙀😯😯.That was the original engine from the Milne car and went to the US in 1999.

Hello Mercmad, it is a small world indeed! I'm a collector of lots of things and one of them is vintage car magazines. I have a stack of "Australian Hot Rod" and "The Australian Hot Rodding Review" from the 1966 - 1970 period and YES INDEED a small number of 426 Max Wedge cars were raced "down under" (as we say "up here" in the U.S.). Just a coupe I can see right now are "Larsen's Ramcharger" a 1964 PLYMOUTH in the November 1966 issue (page 21), and on pg. 57 of the November 1968 issue the dueling 1964 Plymouth max Wedges of Bert Needham and Des Leonard are shown launching together at Surfers Paradise under the stars. Des Leonard's '64 Plymouth hardtop shows up again on pg. 27 of the August 1966 issue of "Australian Hot Rod" and Bert Needham's "Needham Automatic Co." '64 Plymouth sedan appears once again on pg. 35 of the July 1969 issue of "The Australian Hot Rodding Revue". Interestingly, Needham's Plymouth is shown wearing a front license plate from CALIFORNIA that reads "JOM563". It is very possible that this car was originally sold out of Milne Brothers Chrysler-Plymouth on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, CA. We must wonder where these cars are today...a possible answer appears on pps. 10-11 of the January 1969 issue of "Australian Hot Rod" where a 2-page black-and-white feature story on the John Bell / Allan Caelli-built fiberglass T-Bucket open-wheel altered-type drag car which is powered by a...Max Wedge. Could one of the Plymouth's have been "parted out" by the time this January, 1969 magazine article appeared? Did Bell and Caelli buy a "crate" engine and have it shipped to Australia? The mind boggles. What is bizarre about this T-Bucker dragger (painted up as "The Spoiler') is the FORD-O-Matic transmission! Perhaps the Max Wedge-spec push-button 727 Torqueflite was not available to these guys? I wonder how they adapted the Mopar block to the Ford bell housing (no there are no close-up photos though the cast iron case of the Borg-Warner / Ford-O-Matic transmission is photographed). So many mysteries...so little time. THANKS again for jogging these memories of Max Wedges in Australia! -Steve Magnante

This is sad, wrecker Jonny. I guess it is all a out the money. One wrecker here retired, 99% of his stuff was newer, but there was a few 1950's stuff that also got baled and sent off to the shredders. Some small scrappers don't have the room to store them either. At least try to sell them before melting them down!

There was a old auto Teacher in 1963 That Ford and General Motors bailed out Chrysler many times to have another car manufacture he taught us a National Technical Schools in LA. Great school at that time. Long time gone.

My Grandfather would be 103 today, my Dad would be 81 and Uncle would be 78, I am the last Grayson, I recall Hemmings mlotor news when it was typewritten , my Uncle was an actor for 30+ years he had 75vehicles at one point stored ikn a chicken coop in Cucamonga, he loved Chysler's but had many others. Some notable cars were a 1946 Mercury 4wd Marmon Herrington conversion built for ex fotomat tycoon turned ornithologist photographer Donald Bleth, a very rare woody, my Dad had it for ablout 15 years before y Uncle went to LA with it, it had a sweet 283 solid lifter vette motor, the current owner put a flathed back kn it now, we restored 3 Town &COuntry convertibles, an Airlow, a 1929Chrysler roadster we drove unrestored from Mass to LA across I 40 ause we had no heater and wooden wheels unrestored uinregistered since 1955, a hell of a story there! When I moved into my Uncles house in the 90210 at age15 he showed me a car ion his garage a 1967 427 ac Cobra in 1975, he had a 1969 Rolls Corniche convertible too he let me drive both myself at age 16!

Hello Skid Markman, great story and all I can say is "only in America" where acting and the car hobby can go hand-in-hand. Your Uncle's Cucamonga chicken coop stash sounds like a GOLD mine. I spent 17 years in the Los Angeles area (owned a house and half acre plot in El Monte) and remember painfully many shouting matches with the Code Enforcement guy over MY cars in MY yard. I had to install a WOOD fence (couldn't be metal..."too industrial looking for this neighborhood" he said) to shield folks driving by my home on Cherrylee Drive from the "unsightly" vision of some pretty neat, well cared for older cars. What a hassle that was. I've heard recently Code Enforcement is using Google Earth to locate "hidden" backyard vehicle stashes in urban (and rural) locations so as to go after non-op / vehicle excise tax funds! I sold my place, hired an Intercity Lines big-rig to transport my 6 cars and 2-tons of personal stuff "back home" to Massachusetts about 11 years ago. I do miss California's cars and fine folks but DO NOT miss the Code Enforcement people. Funny thing was, my neighbors and I got along great and they liked my cars (I had 6 on my property at the maximum) and they never complained. When I'd ask the Code Enforcement guy: "did somebody file a complaint?" He'd say "yes". I'd ask: "But WHO? We all get along great here" and he'd say "I don't have to tell you WHO". In other words, it was probably made up and he chose me and my yard to zoom in on. Oh well. I still love California! OK, THANKS for watching and sharing, Steve Magnante

@@SteveMagnante Funny you mention code enforcement, I just paid $575 to the city of Sacramento for having a Ducati Diavel, Stella scooter, Tote Gote and a few mtn bikes in my driveway, same thing, allegedly a neighbor called. My Dad, Grandpa and Uncle talked cars every time we were together, it is different now I have nobody to talk about cars with anymore. My Dad married a gal whose father owned 30 egg ranches across so cal, he had an egg processing plant to dehydrate eggs for the army, the chicken coop my Uncle had the 75 vehicles was part of the egg ranch at one time, it was about 1/8th mile long with lights, he had Chryslers , Plymouths, De Soto's, Packard's, a couple v12 Caddys,, Lincoln's trucks, cars, woody's, the 46 Mercury woody 4wd Marmon Herrington conversion was one of the special vehicles my Uncle and Dad were caretakers of, they both told me nobody really owns cars as they live forever. My Uncle when he died had a Bentley Azure convertible, a BMW 850 csi 6 spd V 12, he was in the E31 forum with over 4500 posts, he had a 1937 Lincoln Zephyr 3 window V12 coupe that was the last old car he bought before he died. At age 15 ,I moved into my Uncles house in Coldwater canyon below Mullholland drive, that was a culture shock, my uncles best pal also am actor was named Reid smith, Reid was an actor and mansion flipper before flipping homes was En vogue. Reid Smith dated many famous actresses, Maude Adams, Valerie Perrine, Victoria Principal, he was dating Jaclyn Smith just before Charlies Angels premiered , she was already famous, her Daddy was a rich Texan , she had a mansion off Coldwater canyon on Lindacrest dr, my Uncle took me to her house for dinner one night I arm wrestled Reid and beat him in front of her. Reid also had a 427 AC Cobra as did my Uncle, his was in Gumball rally or Canon ball movie,? they had a mutual buddy a guy whose Grandfather owned Levitz furniture, Gary Levitz, those 3 were as wild as anyone ever was! They all had real Cobras and would blast around the canyons, Benedict, Laurel, and Coldwater, Mullholland drive and Sunset, they were rich, young ,, handsome, lived in the 90210 and were car guys. The 1929 Chrysler roadster my Uncle said the 29 Chrysler did well at Le mans that year, we went to Framingham Mass to drive it back to Los Angeles unrestored and unregistered since 1955, it was 1976, the car had wooden wheels and no heater, we about froze to death even though we kept along the coast as I 80 was way too cold in November, Framingham was colder than any place I have ever been! We stopped at several shops that allowed us to remain there after they went home so my Uncle and I could fix the car, we rewound the generator by hand, plasti-gauged the rods and crank, all things I never did before, it was a wild trip, I snagged a license plate in NY off a Granada at a rental yard, we made it all the way to LA except for the night we were in South Carolina and pulled into a late night diner as a sheriff was backing out, we went in thinking nothing but he ran the plates, after my Uncle went to the bathroom i saw the sheriff come in and straight to me asking where my buddy went, we were arrested taken in and a magistrate was awoken to come out at 2 am to fine us $150 cash and away we went!

My Uncle actually let me take his real 1967 427 AC Cobra out by myself! many times, I bet I am the only kid in LA that ever drove a Cobra alone! I had a TR6 then, I took the Cobra to Van Nuys blvd and nobody knew what it was as did I whenn je first showed it to me but oh wow whenn it started up the side pipes compression was blassting puffs of dust around the driveway with each lope of the engine! The 1976 Turbo Crarras had come out doing 14 second 1/4 mile and 160 mph, my Uncle was next to one i his CObra and the guy was jousting, my Uncle said, watch this, dropped it bogging in 3rd to 2nd gear and pinned my head back as we blew away that Turbo Carerra! He had a 1970 Boss 429 that a guy named Earl Wade in Azusa built the engine to 486 ci and 12 to 1 compression! That was a wild Mustang too!

My Dad went to Bob Bondurant school and afterwards he took me to the Ontario motor speedway parking lot witrh my Grandmas 63 Le Mans, with a 326 V8, looked like a GTO. My Dad told me to turn hard right and floor it then left then right never letting up on the gas showed me how to slide a car and reverse 180 and forward 180 etc, there were no poles they used portable lights so nothing to run into and gravel was the lot surface. My Da dalso had an AC Bristol that he put a 215 ci oldsmobile engine in the aluminum frame, ran great!

This is my favorite Dodge of all times!!! I had my Great-grandpa's (who I knew he was alive when I was a kid) as my first car and it is the one I regret selling while in college. It was also a 4 door for the family with a 318 poly, white. I didn't realize that many were made! So many more than the 1972 Satellite Sebring Plus I currently have. If it wasn't for the Satellite I would be on the hunt for another one of these and maybe someday I could still add one to the collection. Great work Steve, I always love your content.

It's probably just me, but I actually prefer the looks of these as four door hardtops than two doors. There's something super classy, sleek and very early 60s about the roofline with the hardtop sedans. Even with a 318 Poly, it would be an awesome cruiser for some friends or family.

When my 65 sport satellite 383 440 heads headers 780 dl holly 4 speed was getting worked on I bought my dad's 65 polara 4 door 383 2 bbl the car I got my first dl in drove till it 290,000 miles and the front spindle sized what a great car

Yes, they are highly misunderstood today - and then too! Most folks assume 1965 was the debut year for the altered wheelbase concept. But those 4 Alexander Brothers-built 1964 A/FX cars were a "proof of concept" trial. They look BRUTAL too with their slightly bizarre proportions with axles and wheels just slightly off kilter! Cool piece of drag racing history I being Canadian had gotten a cool piece of drag racing history right here in ottawa this famous car painter Dez of dezs autobody who taught MD how to color sand I.e wet sand gave me a frame and cage chassis from one of the gapp & rough pro stock mavericks it was at my uncles garage and some one stole it

I believe Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter's Polara was a '66. Different aluminum rear trim and lights of course. Certainly storied models, the Polara and Morocco.

I was Mopar thru and thru. We had 5 different cars with 318 poly's. 1960 Dart Pioneer, '63 440, '64 330, '64 Savoy, all 4 door sedans. Also a '59 Suburban with a gas heater!

On the steering wheel insert, it read something about 1964 being Dodge's Golden Anniversary. I understand that the rear axle was not easy to service. The nut had to be torqued to 250 foot pounds.

Another great video Steve. I owned a 64 dodge 330 4 door sedan it was a six cylinder manual brakes and steering. Push button auto. Black with red interior. In 1977 I bought it from my boss who owned a GULF station in Wakefield mass. for $50.00.I was 19 years old . I had a lot of really good times in that car.
