I’m 78 years old and have lived close to NAS Whidbey Island for 32 years. I LOVE hearing and watching these and various other aircraft, including helicopters, operate. It’s also fun to stop on SR20 beside the OLF and watch the action. Thanks for making an occasional daydream fun. Fly Navy!

My young sons and I use to go to a place by NAS Whidbey where we could watch touch and goes with binoculars (I think it was called Monkey hill or something like that). Then one day we saw two guards in a hummer pointing at us from way across the field...they started coming at us at a pretty good clip, so we got outa there!!

There is a story that a F-14 pilot with either VF-11 or VF-31 bought a Suzuki Hyabusa when they came out in 1999 and somehow raced it against a F-14D doing a departure out of NAS Oceana. The Hyabusa left the jet in the dust until about midfield when the F-14, now airborne and in full burner, blew past it. Joke was the Hyabusa won the ¼, the Tomcat won the race. On the cat...even the E-2 would beat a Lambo.

These are always enjoyable and a great reminder of the hard work the men and women of the US Navy (and all of the armed services) put in day in and day out to keep American free! Thanks to you and your crew mates for your service! There used to be comparisons between the catapult launch of a fighter jet and the Top Fuel dragster. The jet used to win. But today the Top Fuel dragster covers a thousand feet from a dead stop in just over three seconds. And goes through the timing lights at about 340 mph. Much quicker than a catapult launched fighter jet.
@georgew.563913 минут бұрын
Looking again at the results, if the jet was to accelerate to the full thousand feet, on the catapult it might be a really close race! I’d love to see it!!! 😊

Two quick questions for you Pail: 1) In a runway full afterburner take-off, ant who would be faster at the end of a 1/4 mile? 2) Speaking of speed, have you ever done a low-level, high speed fly-by of a carrier?

So, by my calculations, if the aircraft carrier is 1/4 mile from the grocery store and the store closes in 5 seconds, the Growler has plenty of time.
@andrewt.556732 минут бұрын
Keep in mind, you had the boat give you a toss. Now lets put the Lamborghini on the catapult and see who wins. You have vastly more power, but you also weigh more. That all said, yes, the finish line is a little more survivable in your ride.

The true question is how many pounds of fuel are burned while waiting to catapult? It’s a power to weight ratio and the Growler wins every time because the shuttle is getting her a massive head start

Here’s one I’ve always pondered Pail- if you ran your jet all the way back to the fantail to a point that is as close to falling off the deck as it is being on it, and you hit MIL power, could you take off using the full length of the carrier? With say…a typical wartime load on board? I’ve always wondered if that was an emergency option in case of complete cat failure…. Chat gpt said- “Ask Pail”.

@NRZ-3Pi10Минут бұрын
Yup; too bad the Lamborghini doesn’t have tail hook and also arrestor cables are at the other end. Thus interesting question when going for max speed as much as can, when would be the latest point to hit the brakes the Veneno could stop safely before dropping off? Other question: how far could the Lambo fly when using the JBD as jump; and what’s the best angle of the JBD to keep it landing on the flight-deck still? Questions over questions … 😉 I don’t expect Pail to answer this, of course 😅.

Search new carrier catapult test. There are videos of them shooting weighted sleds into the James River from Newport News Shipbuilding. The sleds vary in weight from 7k pounds to 140k pounds. They all travel close to the same speed and distance because of varying steam valve settings.
