You're one of the few 800m runner out there who actually gives tips on how to improve performances (implementing crosstraining) and I really appreciate that. I'm always a fan of your running style and how you're able to obliterate huge fields from the back. You're a master tactician, and I'll try my best to implement some of your training strategies into my 800m development for the future. Not many people put out how they became Successful on track and even if they do they normally charge huge sums which everybody dont really have.. so thanks again 🙂✌.

I first heard about you in 2008, when I was in 7th grade after watching you win the 800m Olympic trials. That's still to this day my favorite race to watch and I followed your career ever since. Even though high school cross country and track didn't go well for me due to all the injuries, watching guys like you, Matthew Centrowitz, and Jeremy Wariner all made me passionate about running. I haven't ran competitively in a while but I still enjoy going on runs regularly. Thanks for being such an inspiration 👍

As an older athlete (55 yrs. old) making a bit of a comeback, I’m finding your videos extremely motivating. In college, I was a cross country, and track (5,000 and 10,000 meters), running about 5 min per mile pace. Former runner under Mike Barnow (WTC). My goal is to run a sub 5 min mile at some point. If you could do a training/ advice video for older athletes, that would be incredible. BTW - I am old enough to have seen almost all of your races! USA!

Inspiring. As a “no-named Division III kid” this video shows me that my story has more to come. I don’t have a lot of natural talent but boy I’ve worked hard dropping my 8k from a 35:20-29:42 in 3 years and finally being able to race sub-5 miles in track...

This is the very first race I can remember seeing on TV. Even though my career as an 800 runner would end when I transitioned up to 3k/5k in college, this was one of a handful of races I would watch before meets to get in that "killer" mindset (pretty much just this and Solinsky's sub-27 10k debut tbh). Had the privilege of meeting Nick briefly at the 2012 trials and the Oxy meet where another D3 legend (Leer) stole his crown from the slow heat. Both times, his grace in victory and defeat were identical - proving again and again why he should be the model athlete for D3 dreamers like me, new to the sport HS runners, and D1 elites looking to navigate the next steps to becoming a pro. Oh, and Nick, if you're reading this I was coached by Geoff Lambert - one of my favorite/most motivating pictures he ever showed me was the All-American 800 podium he shared with you and Leer back in the day. Keep up the great videos and recaps.

Thanks, Nick! Definitely find all your videos entertaining. This is right when I got passionate about the sport and you were an obvious initial hero of mine. Would love to hear about the rounds and final of 2012 olympics, or any behind the scenes stories of London. Nick, I've seen this video before, but you narrating it like you did helps us really appreciate all that went into it. Even explaining how you were feeling, thinking and strategizing was really neat. I can see now the overwhelming respect, admiration and gratitude you have for coach Radcliffe. And the gratification and pride he had for you after that remarkable climb from the bumper to the front and then to win, must have been so profound for him. Question: you said that you detected a break in his form toward the end. Do you think you would have still passed him to win if he didn't have that break? Personally I think you would have still conquered him because he was maxed out with his stride and could not go any faster where as you had a faster cadence and you had the ability (and will power) to bump it up even more making you go faster. Also you could not have timed it more perfectly whether you knew that at the time or not. Seriously, I get nervous and pumped up when this video is watched.
@nicksymmonds5 жыл бұрын
thanks for the great message! Yes, I noticed Yury struggling towards the end, but I prob would have still beat him even if I had not noticed because I had the momentum. But we do sometimes talk about "smelling blood in the water" in regards to distance running. Sometimes seeing someone struggling a bit is enough to pump an extra shot of adrenaline through the veins!!

Great race. The last 250 meters of the race was when you took over 800 meter distances. It was a damn shame they knocked down Hayward. I guess the new Nike stadium is state of the art but, c'mon, you don't knock down the Colisseum, right? I was lucky enough to see Hayward intact when I visited the campus on the day before it got demolished, and I had no clue it would be razed. I returned the next day and to my shock I saw the bulldozers ripping down the illustrious green theater for running. That was your home, that was Pre's and Bowerman's home...the demolition took a piece out of me. I'm guessing Pre shed a tear in heaven.

I'm having a hard time trying to imagine what it would feel like being so thoroughly exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. Adrenaline had to be coursing through your body like a raging river. How long did it take you to come down from the high and how addictive was it? It just occurred to me that chasing this high could be the reason some runners turn to PEDs.
