My husband and I own 3 car dealerships. One night we had to drive to Atlanta because our mother was sick. Driving through Travelers Rest SC we were pulled over, because we were black driving a G wagon. The officer claimed we were speeding, which we weren't, the car was on cruise control. Then pulled me out the car. Claimed our stories didn’t match so they could search the car, which they thought we stole. Regardless of all the evidence we showed them that we owned the car they refused to believe that two black people could afford this car or own these businesses. They had no clue who we were in the community and didn’t care. They ultimately called the k9 team to search the car and found nothing so they had to let us go. We’ve never even passed through that area again since the incident, and we chose not to pursue legal action so we wouldn’t bring negative attention to ourselves. But unfortunately you lose even when you’re doing everything right sometimes in this society.
