I saw the GTP's run at Heartland Park in 89', the Nissan of Brabham was in a league of it's own, nobody could touch it, not even the Jags...those were the good old days.

first of all, i did not expect the racer channel to upload something spectacular like this. second, correct me if i am wrong but, was the buick engine was the same one used in indycar?

Yes, it was based on the Buick-Indy block. I believe they typically ran a bit more displacement & a bit less boost in the sportscars, compared to how they were run at Indy. I'd imagine that was to try to make them last for an enduro length race & some differences in the regulations. Pretty sure the sportscar motors ran on gas instead of the methanol used in the the indycar application. I remember the GTP Buick's popped quite a few motors back in the day, though. Wicked sounding car and I always liked the look of the the March chassis. Gotta love how it breaks the tires loose on the boost! GREAT VIDEO!

I'd hate having to maintain that gearbox. Driver made a real crunchfest of it. I enjoyed watching him drive, and the video, and power and acceleration though.

Absolutely ludicrous torque. He catches and passes that 600+hp trans am car at 1:09 like it dropped 4 cylinders

this might sound silly... do these cars or race cars that have a turbo charger run a blow off/recirculation valve?

back in the day most did not. that is why you can hear the 962s chirp so much in original configuration

No proper racecar uses bov's. Off throttle surge is harmless. Theres no power on the turbine side, and not much flow rate at the comp side so not much load in the end. In racing you tend to avoid component that can be problematic, it could get stuck open or leak and you lose boost .

that is the famous Cbody that its been in too many engines and trannyes thats why i love so much the ultima gtr its one of the best alltimes body for a lemans racer

This car is clearly powered by a turbine using a v6 for forced induction.

Cant understand why they chose this unreliable v6 when the sbc was so well developed by this point and 2 more intake and exhaust valves.

@MidgetRacer8192 Maybe you misunderstand, I was not talking NA v8 but something along the lines of the Yunick Indy car turbo V8 in 73-74. That was close to 1000hp back when you didnt have the aftermarket support nor the engine management you did in the mid 80's. Supposed to have been 1000hp or more in qualifying trim, biggest problem was fuel delivery. That wouldn't have been the case here. This v6 while powerful proved unreliable.

@@shaadydog1 no, I understand... the rules still favored the other engines over the SBCs. same reason F1 went away from the DFVs about the same time. and reliability may have been an issue, but once that was sorted, the normally aspirated cars weren't as competitive. while an all-out SBC build can make more power, they plain weren't allowed to have that level of a build.

It was governed by weight vs displacement. In 85 a 3.5 turbo V8 would have been legal. Only thing I see here is this correlated with the USAC program so it may have been “cheaper” and part of their testing/development.

acording to one of the drivers that raced this car, they had very very few engines problems. The problem with the car was the rest of the car that could not handle the power such as the turbos, tranny, drive shafts, etc...small block chevy NA would never make enough power to be compettitive and they could not turbo the big displacement
