All the people saying to just buy a scatpack for the money are missing the point of being a car enthusiast. It’s about individuality. There are a million stock scats, stock hellcats, stock RTs, and they’re a dime a dozen. I’d rather continue to build my car and have it be exactly what I want it to be. I have a 5.7 Chally and am a lifelong car enthusiast. I looked at modifying my car and came to the following conclusions: 1) I would spend as much or more as if I just bought a 6.4. 2) the resulting car would not be as cohesive, or as well thought out, as the 6.4. 3) your typical shop would be reluctant to work on it. I ended up keeping mine stock and continued to mid my other rides, where my work and $ would result in an improved vehicle.

After doing every bolt on, cam, long tubes, etc. I have to say - in order to get to 392 power level you need either stroker or forced air. The displacement difference is big. Love my R/T though - wouldn't have done it any other way. Great video man & much respect to all mopars out there.

BTW I'm just referring to HP - I've seen 5.7L builds with converters, higher gears etc. making far less power than a 392 but putting up similar 1/4 mile times.

Boost it, DONE. Mine made +800 HP per 1/4 mile time and 1/4 mile MPH @ TX2K. Want to go fast just boost it. After all my upgrades 3 things stand out. Ported intake, E85, and BOOST. Have BMason design you a cam and port your intake and then put together a budget turbo set up. Although mine is a built engine i did over 600 on the stock bottom end without even ring gap. Its all like the LS stuff to my opinion. Just boost it and be done. If you want to make big power, forged pistons and rods and stud it and be done. Yes more expensive than a 6.4 but makes big reliable lower!

I’m with R/T Life. I’ve done every bolt on (depending on your definition of bolt on) and did the converter. With that, I am running very close to stock Scat times. 3.6 0-60 and 11.8 in the 1/4 mile. My next mod is ported heads and the suspension which should push me over the edge. Yes, the non forced induction route is expensive but it’s not about money for most of us 5.7 molders. It’s about taking the 5.7 to its limits (read sleeper so to speak). Yes, with the costs of the mods you could just get a Scat but personally, I have had an awesome time modding my 5.7 over the last 3+ years. Built vs bought. It’s a personal preference and decision. Great video, RacerX! Upgrading to wider wheels, wider tires, performance suspension and springs, installing larger rotors, four-pot calipers, and brake pads to safely support the added horsepower gains just about doubles the cost of modding your R/T to match the output power of a Scatpack, or rather at least make it as safe as a Scatpack with those extra 100 ponies. But admittedly, modding an R/T to this level carries a certain level of satisfaction of owning and racing a sleeper, especially if you can do most (if not all) of your own wrenching. The cumulative mods add very little to the value of the car because at the end of the day, your VIN still identifies your Mopar as an R/T. You may realize ten to twenty cents for every dollar you spend on mods, but only if you can find the right buyer who recognizes the value of your aftermarket modifications. I've done the math several times over the years and concluded every time that buying a used SRT-392 or Scatpack was the easiest and often less expensive way to go. Ironically when I was ready to move up from my R/T two years ago, I bought a 2015 Hellcat instead, and it wasn't much more than a used Scatpack.

Option 4: stroker. For 13k, all in, you can have a 400 c.i. Stroker from inertia motorsports installed, tuned, with some shorties and the STOCK exhaust.....500 horsepower at the crank or even more depending on your cam selection (which Stu will offer you cam choices), and that is a fully built, reliable build that will walk all over a stock scat pack. It’s a monster. You can spend more on the catback. Or a custom exhaust. Or long tubes, which would put you at a ridiculous 530 or 540 HP N/A. More than enough for the street and enough to make stock scat packs look silly, with the stock converter and everything believe it or not. All that being said....scat pack is the better value. Last point, and someone else brought it up....the RT is severely under-braked. Two piston calipers just don’t cut it for the weight of the car to repeatedly stop it from high speeds. So add 3-4K to your cost for some actual great brakes for the car. At that point, you could’ve put an excellent down payment on a new scat pack.

You know the best part about intake, exhaust and cam mods and getting tuned? They support each other and can increase power more than they would have alone. Anyone can throw mods on but knowing how they all come together releases the true power potential. Are the heads restrictive from factory? Porting heads usually help with breathing and you can sometimes mill very little off to get a slight bump in compression if the valve timing allows for it.

Now you have super/turbocharger cost + forged piston kit cost (roughly $1,800) + $$$ installation labor + tuning +... If you really want to keep an R/T and make Scat Pack HP/TQ, it would be cheaper to do an engine swap. I see 392s on Marketplace a lot for reasonable prices. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps!

I had a rt custom and absolutely loved it, drove a scat, and still liked my rt better, then I drove a hellcat, my rt already had at least 20k in extras, the diff axles and driveshaft in my rt are actually the upgrade for the hellcat. Once I drove a hellcat there was absolutely no comparison. No one wants to date the second prettiest, no one ever remembers who comes in second or third. That's just the truth, I said all the same things I see in the comments, I had already spent almost enough to get a hellcat and wasn't anywhere even close to matching it. The very same day I drove the hellcat I traded my completely custom, badass, rt for it. The only reason to get anything but a hellcat is you are scared, because if you are going to put work and parts into a rt or scat, you will be spending more to get even close to the same performance.

Scared...I don't know, maybe they don't want to drop the 60 to 70k on a muscle car. I'm a GM guy that's been at this a very long time. My first was a 1994 25th Anniversary Trans-Am (in 1996)...I actually still own it and she's far from stock. She's not as mean as my Firehawk but still stupidly fast. At any rate, I have a 2014 SS Camaro that is getting traded in soon, like this weekend and I'm looking at my first Dodge ever. Yes, I could buy a Hellcat but I'm not for two very distinct reasons. The first is I'm not a Dodge guy and I don't know the cars. Right now, if I'm throwing Hellcat money down I am buying a Corvette. I'm going to give the 5.7 liter a chance to wow me and if I like it, I will get a Hellcat (likely next year). The other issue is my fiancee. Whatever I get, she will drive as well. That means I'm getting an automatic (unfortunately) and the Hellcat is too much car for her first. Before you ask, I don't own an automatic right now or she would be driving my 1994 25th Anniversary Trans-Am. She wants too as it looks just as good as the day it rolled out of the factory. The Firehawk scares her to death but it is tricked out six ways from Sunday. Just my take on all of this.
@kelvinbrown42742 жыл бұрын
@@Sinn0100 lol, so she's scared, I have 2 licensed drivers in my house and they are both scared of driving my hellcat, my rt was my first dodge ever. And I've been at this a very long time, my first car was a 68 Camaro. Scared is the appropriate word, from what I've seen on here most if not all the people who have a hellcat are scared of their car. Probably with good reason, if you don't have the skills to control something with the back wheels spinning and exercise those skills regularly you can very easily end up wrecking your ride. I don't fall in that category. I looked at the Camaro and mustang before I got my rt. I'm 6 foot 3, and my 16 year old is bigger than me, not only would we both barely fit, they aren't pony cars anymore they are sports cars with a much more European feel. One word of advice, an rt is nothing like a hellcat. It's missing all the srt goodies, plus obviously the power. I had a procharged 02 Camaro ss convertible that I absolutely loved, can't hold a candle to my hellcat. Too many people see the hellcat as more of a symbol than a transportation device. They store them and barely drive them. I didn't buy a status symbol, I bought a car that can fit my big and tall family of four and all their stuff comfortably on a cross country trip, that also matches my personality and comes close to matching my skill level. THAT should be the focus of every car purchase, perform the necessary tasks and match or come as close as possible to your personality and skill. Nothing else really matters. I don't know if you've seen any of my other responses but my hellcat has over 100k miles, I drive it almost every day regardless of weather always w all traction and stability systems completely off, that's the only way to get it to actually move in snow. Also for the record a hellcat with all the electronic nannies on, is not that difficult to drive or control, you can set the car at either 500 or 700 horsepower, set up in 500 with all systems on it us actually pretty tame and could most likely be safely driven by almost anyone. Ask some people on here, that is how they drive theirs most if not all the time.

@@kelvinbrown4274 She's scared, but not the person buying the car. I myself am not afraid of them, I have respect for them. As far as not fitting...I'm 6 foot 2 and I haven't had any issues with my SS at all and too me it still feels like a muscle car.

@@Sinn0100 it never was a muscle car, the muscle cars were full size, the Camaro and mustang were pony cars. Also, do you fit fine in the back? I fit comfortably in the back of my hellcat.

@@kelvinbrown4274 Umm...pony cars are muscle cars. In all my years I have never heard anyone differentiate the two, ever. Further, why on God's green earth would I ever ride in the back of my cars (serious question)? I have ridden in the passenger seat of all of them but the back, no I haven't. My fiancee has but she's very small (5 foot 6) but that's really, really rare. Ediit- I'm really not trying to sound like a jerk even though I feel like I'm coming off that way. So if I do sound like that, I'm honestly not trying to be.

I have an ‘18 Scat pack Charger with dynamics packages.. if you’re getting a 5.7... spend another $20 a month for the increase cost for the 6.4... these aren’t like mustangs where you can mod everything and they accept them. I haven’t done one mod to my Charger and it’s lovely.
