The first character I ever played was a tiefling dragon sorceress who was in denial about her infernal heritage. She believed that her features were a manifestation of her draconic heritage instead.

@@rickwrites2612 Total agreement, I'm not surprised I see a ton of queer folk who like to play as Tieflings (including myself) and I'm also not surprised to hear that there are poc and people of mixed backgrounds who also like to play as them. I think modern Teiflings can potentially make for really interesting storylines for campaign, if you’re playing in a setting where the majority of Teiflings originate from some ancient empire that made a pact with Asmodeus that collapsed and resulted in a Teifling diaspora then you could have a storyline revolving around Teifling “nationalists” (for lack of a better term) who want to unite all the Tieflings exodites and attempt to settle a new homeland or reclaim the territory of their old empire or at least the heartland of it. Another Idea could be a group of Teiflings who hate their fiendish appearance and influence and are trying to find a way to change all the Tieflings back to humans, and perhaps you can have the Tiefling Nationalist Plot And the Changing Teiflings back to humans occurring in the same game and there’s a conflict between the groups.

Oh, my god. The timing of (me watching) this is amazing. In my campaign I'm DMing I have a tiefling magus and a dwarf warpriest (using Pathfinder in a homebrew) who worships Asmodeus. Thank you, because I now have a whole bunch of things to link them together and lend depth to each of their backstories. Combined with the Dragons episodes, you have given me so much more to flesh out my world and hook my players. Grippli? I know it's a niche race, but I have one of those too.

I believe tieflings(although having a weird and puny sounding name) are very underestimated race. Not only that, but they also bring a very interesting flavor to the table of perheps..generic races? I like to play something that stands out, in the way of their rich lore and apperance, aswell as the way they might be looked down on because of who they are.

I need to comment on the statement that MOST people are monolingual. Guys this is not true. There are a great number of people whose grow up speaking multiple languages in their country. Especially when races are closer to each other either because they are allies or they are enemies. it just makes sense. Not only that but the further speakers of a common language like say common live the more likely differences will develop between them. Just look at how the German and Latin families of languages have diverged quite differently.

The change-over of tieflings from what was the norm in 3.5 to 4e, and now 5e was likely related to Asmodeus' ascension to godhood during the Time of Troubles. There are a number of novels that relate to that time period, and a series of books by Erin M. Evans (The Brimstone Angel series, I call it, after the title of the first book) does delve into the history and lore surrounding that point of time in the realms.

I don't know why, but a lot of Teiflings I've seen and one I've played just seem to be scary looking dorks. Their basically mostly harmless dorks who just kinda happen to be the person equivalent of a dumpster fire. A Huge freaking mess. Like my current one is a bit of a derp, book smart but basically has a sort of sheltered life growing up, so he's innocent and a dork, and accidentally mad a pact with the archfey of the summer court, so now he's just basically a prankster kid that's fully grown with weird ass magic powers.

Answering the question you ask in the beginning. Personally I love em. Been playing tiefling characters since 3.5 when I found their 'As Characters' entry in the Monster Manual. They have so much potential for character development and as outcasts they called out to me as I (like many other gamers) spent much of my time growing up as something of an outcast. Two of my favorite tieflings [that I created] were my Tiefling Psion (Shaper) and my Tiefling Paladin. (Mind you, this is 3.5 we're talking about here).

I'm just getting into DnD, and my first charactef is a female, Tiefling warlock who was raised in a VERY remote system of villages that were all populated by Tieflings. These Tieflings allowed a system of Devil Cults to take the first born son and daughter of each couple when the children become 7 years old. The children were separated into one of nine cults based around the nine Archdevils. The patron they were given to was decided by examing the child's personality. My Tiefling is a reserved, cold hearted female named Abbyssina who knows no love except for a fanatical obsession over arcane knowledge/secrets. She is downright greedy for any such knowledge, and was dedicated to Methistopheles. The whole system was brought down by her brother, Bardon, who defected to Demagorgon. With no home and nowhere to go, Abbyssina wanders aimlessly with a ragtag band of adventurers who mistreat her because of her race. But they are right to not trust her, for Abbyssina will eventually remember the old stories of that ancient kingdom which was ruled by Tieflings. Suddenly, she realizes her purpose; she begins to work towards recreating it. To do so Abbyssina will commit acts of great charity and terrible evil, and assissinate or otherwise remove any who get in her way.

I really do like the idea of the Winged Tiefling, and do want to play one, so I think that a good idea as a trade-off to help ensure the Tiefling’s wings aren’t game-breaking is to restrict the ability to attack or cast spells and cantrips while flying until later levels. Say, they can’t attack or use non-concentration spells until they reach a level that another character could get a high enough spell slot to cast fly, and then restrict concentration spells until even later. That would help prevent the player from any potential abuse of their flight speed in combat encounters.

that nerfs martials to nearly raceless until they can attack in flight, but barely effects casters, IMO, winged tieflings are as balenced as Aarockora, or even more so since their slower.

My Tiefling was born from 2 human parents; just an unfortunate crop up in his genetic heritage. The same day he was born, his town was devastated by an earthquake, thus setting him on the path of being the "accursed" scapegoat to anything that went wrong. He grew up with a lot of shame and guilt, as his parents didn't want him and were disappointed in him by something he couldn't control. He was eventually given over (read: abandoned) to a church where he became a Paladin. Now he tries to right the wrongs in the world he feels his very existence created.

Atavism is what I think of, although it may be a bit too scientific and not entirely correct. I have been working on two races to compliment Aasimar and Tieflings, so there will be a races of half-men tied to the feawild and shadowfel. Also keep in mind that Draenei are basically holy Tieflings so just like there is corrupted Aasimar you can have purified Tieflings.

It's funny. We got a Tiefling, a Minotaur, a Vedelkin, a human, and a half-elf (me). I'm the only one in our party that speaks Undercommon. I play this off as my character being in good with the followers of Eilistraee and they taught him the language as part of their friendship. There are drow in our campaign so my DM is planning on using that bit of backstory to screw with my character as best she can.

From what I have read in the various books, it seems to me that in 5e both kinds of tiefling exist. One is the main Player's Handbook type and the other is the variant in the Sword Coast Player's Guide. Which I think is great because I like both kinds (the ritual one and the descended from fiends one). I prefer the version from the Sword Coast Player's Guide because of the additional options for their appearance (more options are always good from a player's perspective).

The DM let people choose their role..rogue, fighter, etc. and I was early so I got one of the first picks and chose rogue..turns out my rogue is a tiefling so I've been doing some research on what exactly I can work with..I saw the cantrip but didn't know what it did ..this helps a lot and I think I can find a way to use it at some point during the campaign.

Well, I should note that in Planescape idea for tieflings quickly moved from "your ancestor was a fiend" to "you had Lower Planar influence" in general. A tiefling could be born as such due to being concepted on a Lower Plane, or indeed from some fiendish curse or pact. New tiefling style does not go against traditional one in pretty much any way - it is just that sadly possibilities other than "devilish noble in exile" aren't really presented or explored. Aasimar come off much closer to traditional depiction in 5e, though they are just literal polar opposites of tieflings, and similar in many ways.

I think that tieflings do belong as a player race, and that they do belong in the player handbook. Granted, I imagine the reason for a lot of newcomers to RP a tiefling would be eye candy, but I can think of no better race to serve as a player's first step into something exotic. My main reason for that, other than the aforementioned; unlike other exotic half-races, like Half-dragons, Aasimar, etc. tieflings are relatively very far-removed from their exotic heritage, orrather, the need to incorporate it. You don't need to dive as deep into DnD lore to get a complete story out of them. As such, it's easier to create a tiefling character and not need to give them a lore-heavy backstory. More than Half-dragons or Aasimar, they could just have mundane backstories.

A polyglott is someone who speaks two or more languages. In other parts of the world (other than the USA, for example), polyglotts are not uncommon. They are also common on borders. Just gotta voice disagreement with the complaint of many languages PCs know. We're Americans, so it's easy to think of multilingualism to be rare, but if you look at Europe that is not the case. Europe has so many neighboring cultures clustered adjacent to each other that many people know two, three or even four languages. As far as I can tell, the usual D&D setting is just like that, so it makes perfect sense that a PC (already someone above average in most respects) should know multiple languages.

I would make some minor lore adjustments, but other than that, Tieflings are dope

I like following the idea that its in the bloodline by having fiendish blood down the line. I just like that its random and you will never know who will become one.

I'm new to DnD and have been watching youtube vids about creatures in DnD. Other races have memorable characters but I don't hear about any tiefling remarkable hero or villain. Can anyone point me to the right direction to popular tiefling (either good or bad)?

Modern tieflings are way better not just opinion wise but also a fact cause it expands to great rp choices as well as classes and I hate it when ppl get stupid and say toxic stuff saying oh I hate them now I can’t stand that however play your tiefling how you want to

The only tiefling I've played was with old-school Planescape rules. She had wings and a tail but was also only two generations removed (grandpa was the source of the bloodline). As a player race, I think it really depends on the campaign setting and GM consistency. Establish how common or rare the "monstrous" type PC races are. NPCs should react appropriately (which may include not particularly reacting at all if they're quite common, but if they're talked about in whispers and are used to get kids to behave, and then precisely nobody reacts when one turns up in the local tavern, that's an inconsistent world and poor story-telling).

I do not think this is cannon lore, but would be an interesting premise to homebrew this as the default soul destination for a Tiefling soul.

Bob Bobby not by default I read a forgotten realms novel where a Tiefling fiend pack warlock who died and was pulled toward the upper planes. Though the night hell (pun intended) did try to temp the hell out of them.

I have a problem with giving Tieflings a +2 charisma but take it away at the same time ie. all NPC's treat them as suspect to start out if not always! Should they not have wisdom +2 instead. To live their lives they need to feel how others feel and no other race has a +2 wisdom to wisdom. (+1 but no +2).

Tim Green Well the way I see it, Cha is defined as your force of personality and willpower. Someone with high charisma isnt necessarily well liked. Look at Darth Vader or The Emporer for example. They have Charisma (Personality, gravitas and willpower) in spades and they are mistrusted and disliked pretty universally by others. I figure its the same with Tieflings. Their Fiendish blood gives them a great force of will and personality much like most powerful fiends. And its that force of will and refusal to give up that drives tieflings to survive in a world they are hated by.

I'm starting dnd and I'm playing as a female tiefling fighter who dual wields. I'm trying to figure out a good backstory for her. I have to figure out how she got her combat training, while being a tiefling. She's not the brightest, so I wanted to say she was in some sort of soldier/fighting academy and got kicked out for being too dumb. Buuut why would they let in a tiefling anyways? So idek.

Cool cool but what if each race that have children with tieflings have different type of tieflling? Like i know about all the "breeds true" but what if a goliath descended tiefling were to be different than an elven one and each of this is like different to represent what the culture or the race considers to be demonic My world has that
