One thing i noticed is Mercedes and Rachel both had a moment in their life where they had the same choice and we see both outcomes play out. Both women have the choice of whether to take the shortcut and the easy choice that would get them instant success and fame or whether to struggle down the harder road with the possibility of not ever being successful. Mercedes has the choice of whether to sell out and put someone elses face on her album cover and let her management call all the shots but she declines and takes the hard path and keeps her integrity and ultimately ends up successful. Rachel has the choice of whether or not to do the TV show. Broadway is her dram but it's not exactly stable and there is not always a guarantee of a lead roll. Rachel chose the easy path of the TV show thinking it would give her instant success and fame but then we see her life fall apart.

I agree with you! I think at one point you could see that Rachel was starting to act entitled to what she was getting and she needed a humbling, her failing her tv show was a catalyst for her to take a different path in life (value her studies and go back to school) it’s very interesting that the second time around when she had the opportunity to go to broadway she went back to school, I think the creators were trying to teach a lesson with her character because she had gotten too lucky with funny girl in he first place and started to take it all for granted.

I really think they're should've been an arc where Rachel should've joined Vocal Adrenaline. After she meets Jesse and Shelby, her mother, she would seen that they are people who have the same ambitions and interests as her but actually care for her unlike the New Directions at the time. But after she sees her former rival show choir club in a whole different light, she comes to find out how VA win every performance, it's because they actually work well as a team and use everyone equally (I mean, Jesse was kinda the male version of Rachel and got praise and attention as well, but did you see VA's Amy Winehouse's Rehab performance, he wasn't there, and they were amazing.) The Glee club would come to realize that they'd have to stop using Rachel's voice for everything and treat her like a person, and Rachel would come to realize that they are equally if not more talented people in the world and it's only to not be in the spotlight for once.

I don't think so. I think it was the way she failed to deal with her trauma from Finn dying. Throughout the whole series we've seen her work for relational connections and every time those relationships fell through, she would redirect her pain towards focusing on her ambition. It happened with Shelby and Jesse where she directed her focus to beating them at Regionals, it happened when her and Finn broke up and he sent her to New York and she focused on her new school and proving herself to Cassie. I think when Finn died, she needed to focus on her career for fear of breaking down. For the first time the whole series, she wasn't looking for relationships, she didn't date or crush on anyone and fell out with her friends, she only cared about her career. I think when Funny Girl got monotonous because it was no longer a project and becoming just a loop, she didn't have a direction for her ambition to move which she needed in order to not break down. Which is why she went for the TV show. She needed her career to fail so that it wouldn't be a distraction anymore so she could go home and pick up the pieces of her broken heart and rediscover her love for music. I think had Finn lived, even if they were just friends, she wouldn't have had that trauma and so she could have actually enjoyed being Fanny.

I found Rachel's story to be absolutely tragic. She was literally bred to be a talented person and raised such that that was her life. It seemed so robotic and loveless really. I remember feeling heartbroken for her as she sung "she's got to love nobody" to her mother who had just rejected her advanced towards building a relationship. Within two episodes her mother and her first boyfriend both betrayed her trust and became merely her competition. It was as though, for her, relationships weren't meant to work out and her career/talent was her only hope. Finn was the only means out of this loop. As much as I hate young weddings and love a girl who goes after her dream rather than settling down, Finn was the only person who really offered her love that wasn't conditional on her talent/career and I think she needed that. When he died, it was as though she couldn't have love again. From that moment she focused solely on what she had always known was meant for her: her career, obsessing over Funny Girl, on her public image, then on the TV opportunity, pushing away her friends and became completely blind to romance (first time ever for her) and I don't think she ever really recovered from that. Her choice to marry Jesse, although sweet, felt like she had given up on unconditional love. He loved her for her talent. He was such a symbol of focusing on ambition. And I just wanted something different for Rachel. I wanted her to lose the pressure of what was expected of her. I wanted her to find joy in the simple things. I wanted her to be loved deeply and to love deeply. Maybe after a few years on Broadway at least.

I agree with everything but the Jesse part. I think despite Rachel finding acceptance outside her voice, her talent and ambition was still a huge part of her character. The only person who was able to really understand that and keep up with her was Jesse. And he definitely liked her for more than her voice example being how in season 3 he talked to carmen to help her out. I just don’t think someone like Rachel would have been content with doing a show on Broadway, getting her big break and then going to live with Finn in Ohio for the rest of her days. Given that we weren’t able to have Finn and Rachel end up together Jesse and Rachel were the next best alternative- especially since Lea and Jonathan are best friends irl so that was the only thing that made sense while still being sensitive to Cory’s death

Yess finally someone defending Rachel and who actually recognises that she is a good, strong person. But what’s sad is that, so much analysis had to be done and her personality & motivations had to be dissected to come to this conclusion. Which just to me means that this world is so superficial and only tries to reach out for the easiest conclusion they can make. It also demotivates me , a person who resonates with Rachel for being an outcast, that no one can really understand me unless they psychoanalyse me .

That is exactly what I think. People don't give a sh*t to think deeper as humans. Quinn also went through a lot. Puck essentially coerced her into having sex and then shamed her continously when pregnant. Her boyfriend cheated on her (people forget Finn cheated on Quinn with Rachel before she cheated on him). She was kicked out from her house. She was bullied and fatshamed in her previous school. The issue is Ryan Murphy wrote her terribly, and she consistently did a 180 after having great charector growth, and any trauma she went through would be undermined by other characters. Because of her character constantly changing people chose the parts of her charectarisation that makes sense from their pov

honestly the writers ruined her character. She has the best character arc in season 1 and then season 2 she just changed back into her old mean cheerio self, season 3 was a little better but her character is just very inconsistent. One minute she's mean and rude and manipulative and one minute she's sweet and caring.
@felicitylikesgreen47264 жыл бұрын
Even though Quinn went through a lot of struggle a lot of the many of the struggles she initiated with out thinking about the consequences ,for example, her original break up with Finn, her being kicked off the cheerios, etc. Even though the way she got her problems are debatable she had multiple chances to start over. For instance, in season 2 she got everything she wanted back (popularity, dating the most popular guy, being a cheerio), but, she threw it all away. As soon as she gets character growth she goes back to her old ways. Even when she graduated and went to Yale (or Harvard I forgot) she denied her whole past to the guy she was dating and slept her her professor. I give Quin credit for being strong but, her actions caused a lot of damage for others while, continuing to blame others for her problems (like in season 3 she blamed mr Shue for her downfall when it her her actions)

i wish she joined vocal adrenaline, she seemed to prefer training and winning like how vocal adrenaline usually is. I also think when Santana auditioned in season 5, that was like a breaking point for her. She didn't really grief completely at least from what we saw. She felt betrayed and maybe saw her role as the only thing she had. She didn't want to lose it like she lost Finn. Rachel is very complex and has many different layers, and that’s what makes for a good and interesting character. On one hand, she’s a vulnerable teenage girl, an outcast at school, a Jew, the daughter of two gay dads, and as I’m sure, has a whole lot of backstory that we never even got to see. She has many people in her life that she loves and cares about, as often as they may pick bones with each other. On the other hand, she can be a bit of an out-of-control diva when it comes to glee club solos, having hissy fits whenever anyone else in glee club is given one. In fact, she’s so ambitious and protective of her spotlight that when she felt threatened by Sunshine Corazon, she tricked Sunshine into going to a crack house for her audition.

There's this huge trend to hate her and I'm just like ? she has done terrible things, sure. But everyone in this show has. Just as an example (I have plenty) the fact that Rachel allowed Santana to live with her after all the bullying and the Finn situation shows how mature and kind-hearted she is. And even then Santana went to audition for something she KNEW was really important to Rachel. OF COURSE she will get angry. It would be unreal if she didn't. @hildina43614 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Even before all those allegations against Lea Michelle, I had never heard a gleek or any casual fan say that they liked Rachel Berry (or at least very rarely). People including me, always found her annoying because of how entitled she acted and how she always got what she wanted and sometimes without justification. She was clearly a favourite of Ryan Murphy and the writers and that really made her so hard to appreciate and they kept pushing the narrative that she was the most hardworking one but we never even got to see the other characters long enough to see if that was true. But when she finally gets THE job of her dreams after all the "hard work" she put in, she IMMEDIATELY quits for the "easy" fame TV show?? And I don't think the outcome of that storyline was humbling enough considering she was still the same after that--unlike Sharpay Evans which we saw humbled multiple times in the HSM saga and later in her own movie. On the other hand even tho Santana was a bully she had a (slightly) better character development that made people like her even with her bitchiness. Her interventions were never wasted and her lines always somewhat iconic even tho rude. It's actually easy to see why she became a fan favourite in spite of being played by Naya Riviera who if we look at the facts was never a spotless individual.. The Glee Club was supposedly about giving a voice to the "unheard" but they could never do that since Rachel got the majority of the solos and attention from Mr. Shue. I will admit that she's an incredibly well-written character because of all that (maybe too well leaving not much space for others...), as someone else said she is too real, almost palpable. Everybody has at least one Rachel Berry in their life and the hatred is just an understandable projection. (i know that mine is lmao)

i think the reason why rachel’s so hated is because ryan murphy tried so hard to make her seem like she was the glee club’s star and the most talented one, while taking for granted talented vocalists like amber, kevin or jenna. they gave rachel so much solos and storylines throughout the six seasons that it became kind of repetitive, boring and annoying even though lea michele’s talented, and it was so refreshing when we could get storylines or solos from other characters like tina or quinn. also, rachel always ended up getting everything she wanted at the end (in s3 she got into nyada even though she choked at her audition, kurt gave us an incredible performance and was rejected???) and never faced any consequences when she behaved badly, which was irritating.

I honestly loved Rachel Berry as a character.. I found her refreshing, compared to the bland goody two shoes Mrs Nice girl female protagonists of teen shows (Marley was exactly this - no idea how she was the "new Rachel" they were nothing alike) Rachel was always unapologetically herself, she knew she was the best, what she wanted and how she was going to get it and she never apologised for it. She was unpopular because people were intimidated by how talented she was. She wasn't a "likeable" character but she wasn't supposed to be. There is just something so refreshingly authentic and unique about her character that I hadn't ever seen before. Glee had the usual teen show characters like the dumb jock (Finn), blonde popular Queen bee (Quinn), slutty cheerleaders (Brittany and Santana) and following this Rachel would have typically been the shy nerdy good girl like Marley but she wasn't at all. It was nice to see a different dynamic.

If what you are saying is true that I like Santana and Quinn because of their faces then Quinn would have been my favorite character. The reasons why I hate Rachel and Quinn is because they thought so high of themselves. Rachel and Quinn wants friends who look up to them. I hate the way they both kicked out Santana of their friend group when Santana started showing her talent. Santana and Mercedes are my favorites not because they're attractive but because they won't allow themselves or their friends getting hurt. Don't get me wrong I hate when Santana bullies nice and innocent people like Rory but she developed into a very good and protective character compared to herself back in season 1. I honestly agreed with Rachel with the santana feud because of that, her bully, the person that tormented her for the better part of 4 years got the role that she's been working on her entire life without even trying and by using a song that she said she's been practicing her hole life and used it at regionals to save everyone's ass. I never understood Santana's actions. I could have understand her auditioning, and even understanding not telling Rachel before blindsiding her, but then she sang don't rain on my parade, out of the thousands of musicals song she could have chosen, she chose that. Santana did it out of spite because she was jealous of her success, she did it with malice, and then played the victim. And I hate when people side with santana. Does Rachel overreact a little? Yes, but santana doesn't even try to listen how her actions hurt Rachel and refused to apologize or even acknowledge that Rachel has a point.

I always thought Rachel acted so snobby in Glee club because that's the one thing she was great at, the one thing that would get her out of Lima and she had that she could thrive in. When all the popular kids joined they took that shine from her as well yet still casted her off like she was the outsider in the very club just a few of them (even the original club members at times) were ashamed of. Another thing I realized is yeah some of the Glee clubbers tried....at times, but Rachel was the only one who actually put forth effort at all times while the others only cared to try when they felt like it. I'm sorry but there are some Glee clubbers who were far worse then Rachel ever was even at her worse. She was terrible and spoiled at times but hello, what else did she have? The rest of the school let alone the club never really gave her a proper chance and once they did she started to become a better person. All in all, Rachel would have been kinder if they were a little kinder to her, and even when she was unkind and unbearable (unlike some) she recognized it and tried to right her wrongs. I can't say Santana, Quinn or even Kurt at times did that.

And then in the start of the next episode, she is sad and calm and she sings big girls don't cry. I BAWLED MY FREAKING EYES OUT. I can't explain why, but as a teenager and an aspiring performer who looked up to her enormous talent, I felt like my heart was being stomped. That this (very flawed) extremely passionate, overachiever, super talented, stop-at-nothing girl accepted her fate that her dreams wouldn't come true and that was that, was so, so heartbreaking. I loved Rachel, because it was basically like watching a caricatured version of my childhood self. I was smart, outspoken, and assertive, but also insecure and socially awkward. I was shunned and sometimes actively bullied by other kids (and some adults) to the point that I became a much more reticent, insecure, and perfectionistic young adult (to the extent I developed anorexia). Rachel's bad behavior was almost always addressed and she expressed remorse (usually by the end of the episode). And any time she did something absurdly bad it seemed odd and out of character (similar to how the writers made Tina behave in later seasons). She was far kinder and much less self-centered than, for example, Santana, whose "epic burns," while hilarious out of context, come off as needlessly mean and bullying in the context of the show. Also, of course Rachel had the most solos. She was the protagonist.

Thank you for making this analysis video. Rachel is my favorite character and I relayed a lot to her. I didn’t really understand where her behavior came from but I’m glad I have a lot of clarity due to this video. You did a really great job of unpacking Rachel‘s character and justifying her. Also thank you for clarifying that Rachel and Leah Michelle are two different characters/people. I believe a lot of people needed that. Please continue to make these analysis videos. It’s awesome to watch especially to a glee fan.

Honestly rachel is a really well written character and she has done a lot of terrible things, and I agree people harp on her more than other characters, but it seems like the difference is she rarely learns from her actions. She typically gets a pass from everyone because of her talent. Mr Shue made excuses upon excuses for her behavior and the only time she is challenged is by vocal adrenaline when the treble tones formed. Like I get the defense of her but in the same token her growth is what holds her back because she doesnt grow until the end when she looses it all. All of the other characters have large amounts of growth throughout the show with the exception of Blaine (which dont get me started)

I find it ironic that People who bully Rachel's characters aren't real fans of show and didn't even watch it

Super good vidéo!! Rachel is very overheted and the victim of an horrible double standard.... you seem very Smart !

This reminds me of ep 5x14 (New New York) when Rachel talks about potluck dinner with everyone and that is honestly the most happy and excited version of her that I've ever seen. Even more than winning Nationals, more than scoring the callback and then the Fanny role, and especially after her boyfriend's death and Glee Club shutting down. Because for the first time in her life she gets to experience something that other characters have always taken for granted, a group of friends that support her. Sure they are the same people in New Directions, but in the ND days her coping mechanism was to be the best singer to be able to stay in the club. I feel really bad when the fandom keeps bashing on her for all the bad qualities that she has, but what makes me feel less bad is that when you think about it, if Rachel was a real life person, she would definitely use the hate as the drive to move forward even stronger, so I guess the writers have succeeded?

As a Rachel stan, thank you for making this video. She is so overhated in the fandom. People praise characters like Quinn and Santana who were literal BULLIES and use excuses such as “ they were iconic” when they weren’t LMAO. They give them passes because they’re hot (not hating on Dianna or Naya at all, this is more so about the fandom). When they say something mean it’s iconic, but when Rachel says something rude she’s automatically hated on. Has Rachel made mistakes? Absolutely. But we’re acting as if other characters haven’t. Quinn literally made Finn think he was the baby’s daddy, made him pay for things, tried to sabotage Shelby to get Beth back, etc etc...and don’t even get me started on Santana. She has said so many things that are completely unacceptable...if Rachel ever body shamed someone time after time again, y’all would eat her alive, but Santana does it and y’all praise her. Rachel was talented, driven, and ambitious. She had more drive than anyone in the glee club. She knew she was talented and y’all can’t stand it. If you dislike Rachel? Fine I guess. But keep the same energy for everyone else.

I agree. People excuse Quinn and Santana because they are hot.

Exatly. Thank you . if ever Rachel would fat shame Finn and lauren , if Rachel would done the Santana rant on s6 to Kurt , if Rachel would blackmailed Dave they would all hate her with Their whole soul. But when its Santana Who did that it go on video" Santana being the best" . All the bad thing Rachel does go on hâte video and the bad thing Santana does go to love vidéo?? I dont understand it
@laurine____75434 жыл бұрын
Also WORST imagine if Rachel would done anti latina comment to Santana like Santana did with anti semitic comment to Rachel ?? AND EVEN WORSE imagine if Rachel would say " your problem is your sexuality " to Kurt like Santana say to Kurt ? They would DESPISE her until Their death . ( and also how tf anti semitic and homophobic comment go on " Santana being supérior " vidéo ? I dont get it

@@laurine____7543 thank you !! I literally couldn’t have said this better myself. The fandom contains a lot of hypocrites. They think that anything and everything Santana said was iconic when she said a lot of god awful things.

Rachael is unlikeable, but most people are unlikeable for some reason. She’s really relatable for me at least. I always liked her because I feel like I was like her when I was in high school. Then again, I liked Santana because she reminded me of the person I was after high school lol. Now I’m just myself, which happens to be a mix of all these characters because there’s a little of everyone in every one of these people. Such a good show and Rachael Is iconic. Also, Lea Michelle is iconic for bringing this character to life regardless of her stupidity. There has to be some Rachael qualities to her. I mean she stuck with a drug addict till the end, and from a former drug addict I can tell you that takes a big heart.

Okay. Can we address one thing, in Special Education, Rachel finds out that Finn slept with Santana but in the scene where she finds they all knew but her, she asks Finn who told him? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Told him that he had sex with Santana, lol that has bothered me for years 😭

I think peoples hate of her is hypocritcal. Most characters were assholes on that show. Yes she was annoying and self centered but she wasnt that bad and many of her behaviors are also a response to how she was treated. And in the later seasons well, she suffered so much and her friends could have been a lot more empathetic.

I loved your video so much! Thank you for putting into words what I love about her. I always hated the double standard the show and the fans had with her. She was just incredibly ambitious and would stop at nothing to accomplish her dreams, and it's so sad to see how everyone hated her so much while others were actual bullies and got away with it so easily. I'm pretty sure if Santana had sent Rachel to a crackhouse everyone would have found it hilarious. Anyway, great video!!!
