Tony and Diane realise that starting a second-hand business is not going to be as easy as they thought. Scott bought bouncy castles last week and now cannot resist a £260 lizard. Rachel pays six months advance rent, and experiences life debt-free for the first time.
Three long-term families dependent on benefits are given a cash handout of 26,000 each, the current maximum yearly benefit cap for most families. In return, the families must agree to sign off benefits, and see if one large cash sum can turn their lives around for good.
The experiment asks the families to use the money in a way that can positively change their circumstances, make them happier and ultimately remove them from the benefit system. However, there are no strings attached and contributors will make their own decisions, spend money as they want but with the knowledge that they've given up their lives on benefits, and there's no more to come.
Will the families be able to grasp this extraordinary opportunity or will the temptations of a large sum of money in their bank account distract them from their good intentions of building a business or finding work?

honestly like instead of trying to start a business, which most businesses fail in their first 2 years. They should be trying to stabilize their current life and try to benefit themselves in search of a job. get a savings account and but a bunch of that 26 grand into that account. @@robertse4026 I definitely agree! I'm surprised none of them decided to do an airbnb business. After been on the dole for a while and getting used to £70 a week anyone who gets a large amount of money will spend it, you already have a backlog of things you need to buy or overdue bills to pay . Plus it's all relative, so you get used to having that small amount of money when you have a windfall you just don't think about saving it and you are in a different world. I think it's just human nature to do this and most will do the same.

These are years old. And it was part of a quite crazy media denigration of poor and often very vulnerable people, educationally, socially, and economically deprived groups were targeted as scapegoats for the global financial crash, spotlighted, and used as the rationale for a huge change in our system of social security. The result today is wide spread poverty among lower income working people, a massive rise in homelessness, and an increase especially in hunger among school age children, homelessness among disabled people, and shovking an almost doubling of homelessness among the elderly. The life expectancy figures had indicated a continuing rise for many years, this is now reversing. The overall picture today is that the social engineering that programmes like these helped popularise have been an absolute disaster. And consequence of this is that 'employment' which used to classed as part time, full time and self employed is now so muddied that someone doing an hours work a fortnight gets included in the employment figures, giving a totally false impression that the government uses over and over where it describes the nation as having 'near full employment', and constantly tries to create an impression that things are immensely better than they actually are. Hence there is now a very angry and divided nation, because all but those who are economically comfortable are not fooled one little bit.
