About the song:
The story of “She’s So Lonely” starts quite a bit earlier than 2020, although that’s the year its revival begins.
Rachel Solomon, like many musicians and artists that year who found their careers almost entirely placed on hold by the pandemic, found herself digging through old notebooks and hard drives for unfinished songs and projects - easter eggs, asking to be revived - partly out of boredom, partly out of curiosity. It was there she uncovered “She’s So Lonely“, a song dating back as far as 2007, the skeleton of which Rachel had initially constructed in the free music software GarageBand on a long gone Apple laptop. “I always loved the song”, Rachel says, so she further explored by opening the project in Apple’s current version of GarageBand. The song was without an ending, and there were vital software instruments missing - as with every update of GarageBand (and other music programs), some formerly available software sounds go by the wayside without warning.
With plenty of time on her hands and no hard deadlines in sight, Rachel set out to make “She’s So Lonely” the reality she had always intended for it to be. “It was like singing with my ghost”, Rachel reminisces, as she sang and recorded new background vocal parts to a 13+ year old vocal recording of herself. Always having envisioned the song somewhat heavily orchestrated, she recruited - remotely, from the comfort of everyone’s home studio - violist Drew Forde (Adele, John Legend), cellist Emily Nelson (Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton) and violinist Lauren Saks (Hailey Whitters, Terri Clark) to add live string recordings to the existing synthetic orchestral parts.
Although the song long predates the days of lockdown-induced isolation, one of its underlying themes (almost serendipitously) correlates - the experience of paramount loneliness, induced partly by choice, and how others might perceive one’s (and possibly their own) isolation. Take lyrics like “Nobody’s here but me; I can almost see the silence”. A metaphor that many people globally who lived alone likely experienced during the early days of the pandemic.
Over 15 years in the making, “She’s So Lonely” is Rachel Solomon’s newest single release.
