I recently saw an independent horror short film where one of the main characters was a dog who could see the alien monsters that her owner couldn’t. They worked together to fight the monsters off and they were so communicative and in sync despite no commands or even dialogue at all being spoken by the owner. I was in awe learning that the dog WASNT PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED, she was just the Director’s dog that happened to inspire the plot of the movie by constantly staring and barking at nothing in her day to day life. Some of the best dog acting I’ve ever seen. They are currently developing a feature length version.

I really appreciate you adding the animated dogs. In the movie industry animation is so undervalued just because the general public see it like just for kids, that's why I hate live actions based on animations, because people won't watch a "cartoon" but will watch "real people" acting even if is the same plot. And animation was not intended for kids but is a way of cinematography to achieve in believable ways things and words that ain't capable in any other way of acting. animators like Aaron Blaze make an extraordianry work portraying animation animals in both realistic and fantastic ways, but since the words is so stuck in a worng idea about animation that work won't brighten and they'll prefere cheap and unrealistic CGI.

I really, really miss the classic animation style. I get that 3D animation is cheaper and easier (just in the proportions/placement aspect, not saying it’s easy at all) but there’s just not that same emotion, every intentional stroke of a pen all coming together to make some fantastical and exaggerated character. I wish Disney would step up their game again and put out a proper animated movie

No one asked but it's a little known fact among the masses: Dogs do quite often wag their tail during attacks! We like to anthropomorphize them and think oh, "tail wagging means the dog won't show aggression" and that is not the case. I wish they would've kept the tail in for this reason.

@@brittanygreen127 The tail wag a dog would have during an attack would look different than a happy tail wag, though. Happy tail wags are the loose, wiggly kind of tail wags that were removed digitally from that dog; aggressive or alert tail wags look much more stiff and often are high up so that the scent gland is more expressed. So yes, dogs can wag their tails during attacks, and people should know that not all tail wags are good-but the dog was doing unambiguously happy tail wags there
@MayliSong

The wagging tail fact is one of my favourite things about dogs in movies. It happens a lot, the dog actors are so happy to be receiving instructions and praise for completing them that they can’t help themselves. They know they’re doing a good job and they’re just so pleased about it.

I really don't know how she does it, but some dogs do, I often see videos of dogs with similar behaviors.

i own and train two Malinois, when they play - you'd think they were in a serious fight... nope - they are playing. when they were first being trained for personal protection, well before they actually bit, they were trained to the bite sleeve as a game. releasing, re engaging - everything - from basic commands to personal protection training - was as play or a game. that's where the focus and command come from. make it fun, to be serious all the time is boring. but when we need to be serious - its as natural as putting a shoe on.

@ my two are an absolute hoot. Their switches are of two, either durpy durp mode or hell on four paws. I had to buy an electric scooter to run them to supplement yard play. I find my female is more vocal over the male who has an instant / no warning on. He travels very silent on his own unless I ask him to sound off. The breed is amazing, as you know - not for the casual owner but a very hands on (keeping the dog doing a job) family dog. I’ve never had to use them in a real situation - they’d be the last thing I’d send in a real scenario, but I’ve zero doubts I’d know danger is coming before it got to me, that the threat would likely pass me on and if I had to send them, the perp wouldn’t walk away in one piece. Best dogs ever! If you know they have to be worked and run everyday and 4 times on Sundays lol.

Another reason for multiple dogs playing the same dog (it was touched upon at 3:53, but didn't get into it past emotion) that a trainer once told me each dog has been trained for a different trick. One of the films I worked on in the past was Russell Mania (about a jack russell that wrestles). They had multiple dogs because one dog was for jumping high, another was for a different trick, etc (I don't remember it all, it was years ago). In any case, I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for your research and collection of findings! This is an aspect of filmmaking some folks forget or don't always shine a light on! I work in a veterinary er and that shot was scary accurate. Not necessarily shocking to me, but I can definitely see how it’s incredibly shocking to those not used to critically ill dogs. The effects added to the eyes really go the extra mile to sell it but the way the dog was so limp and barely responsive, and the way he was holding his mouth too! Looks like a border collie, they’re very intelligent, unsurprising (but still remarkable) they were able to train such a performance

I gotta say the way they did the dogs in the movie Strays was excellent! They used real dogs with CGI just for the nose and mouth area to make them talk. But they made sure the animation of the mouths looked very natural. I figured it had to be vfx of some sort but it was so well done I couldn’t figure it out without googling it and watching a video explaining it. So they got all the natural, real behaviour of the dogs and their real facial and eye expressions and only applied the effects where necessary. And they blended it so perfectly you couldn’t tell where the dog ended and the CGI started. I’m sure it wasn’t completely flawless and anyone with a good eye would spot them, but for general audience members it was really bang on.

If this was reflective of bolt than the dog from homeward bound would have been legitimately feeling abandoned by a boy he loves instead of having to be shown a bird to grab an equivalent emotion. The dog from bolt completely understands the storylines and emotions he's playing, and the hook is that he doesn't know it's pretend. Real dogs understand none of that, they're just being pushed from one action to one expression by cues and manipulation So, um, no.

Once you really know dogs, you know when they’re sad or when they’re ‘smiling’. So, when a sad scene calls for a ‘sad’ dog, but it looks happy, it takes you out of the film. I’m sure most dog owners will get this and how important it is. I’m glad some of Hollywood gets it too.

Shout out to the dog that was in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood". That pup deserved a whole box of treats for that performance, especially considering she was a shelter dog that was picked for the movie. From what I understand, she ended up finding a home thanks to that movie. I honestly think that should be a new industry standard; recruiting dogs no one seems to want for movies to get them recognized and publicized so they can be adopted and find a loving home. All dogs deserve love and the best possible lives we can give them. They love unconditionally, even when we don't deserve it. Lost my little buddy a few months ago, and even though he had a long life (18 years), I still think about all the times I could've taken him on car rides and didn't, all the times I thought about buying him a new toy and spent the money elsewhere instead, and all the times I got frustrated or upset with him. He had a long, happy life, but now that he's gone, there are things I think about now that I could've done better. Rest in peace, Judd; we miss you so much, but we'll see you again one day.

I hate what happened with Covid cus so many dogs were made to believe they got furrever homes only to then be abandoned years later when Lock up lifted. 😢 I’ve lost a couple of my dogs and it hurts so much, their personalities really make them feel like they are 100% family and when they pass it’s an unimaginable pain.

Unrelated but related (and I know this is a dog video) cats can be very expressive. I have seen excitement, disgust, fear, drowsiness, anger, and others in between with my two cats. And they exhibit the same emotions in their own unique way just like people! Their faces will actually change and their eyes will narrow or widen. Their foreheads can raise or furrow. The muscles of their faces move. I have seen this time and time again and it’s incredible! I think other cat parents can vouch for me too. So no, they are not inexpressive. It’s just much more subtle compared to a dog’s and you have to really know cat behavior and even an individual cat to really pick up on this. Dogs and cats both are very expressive and I can feel and see the moods they’re in. Such amazing and special animals. This is a great video and thought-provoking as well as informative and fascinating. I’d love to see a video on cat actors as well along with monkey and ape actors.

@alialmans my mistake, I meant to say that he was given allegations of being a rapist, not the other thing

This is one of the most interesting videos I have ever seen. A topic I never fully expected to find this enjoyable. Great job.

I think what really made All Dogs Go To Heaven so uncanny was when Gordon Freeman showed up just to die in the next scene.

Fantastic video, there was so much more to this topic than I imagined. I did not expect to be this invested in dog acting but the topic was so interesting, thank you!

Really? Well then my cats must be the most stoned face animals ever, especially the kitten. I've never seen much of a expression on them compared to my dogs

The difference is that dogs have body language and expressions that are very intuitive to us humans; cats are also very expressive, but their body language is not as intuitive to us.

@@Serenity_Dee exactly! cats didn't evolve with us the same way that dogs did, so it stands to reason that the habits they developed to communicate with humans would be less extensive than that of a dog's. regardless, they are extremely expressive animals once you learn to understand their body language.
