I'm a Japanese student who learn English and have been learning Canada history, people, geography, culture, etc since April this year. My teacher was born in Quebec, he teach me many things about Canada, talking some jokes. He and his lecture is very interesting ! I would like to go to Canada someday, and to communicate with Canadians in fluent English, making new friends there !

I lived there for 8 years. You are right - I don't think it would strike most Japanese people as different because they also say "sorry" a lot. My American friends used to make jokes about whether a Japanese person or a Canadian person would win should they get into an "I'm sorry" battle. As an aside, however, we're a lot more likely to say "excuse me" or tap someone on the shoulder to get past people in crowded situations. "Excuse me" (or tapping) is considered a bit rude in Japan because you're asking someone else to move. Japanese people will often quietly try to get around other people, fail, and end up bumping them. Of course, they would then apologize profusely, but it used to drive me insane!
@lemons2300

Canadians, like Americans, are generally polite out of friendliness, which is very different from the non-confrontational politeness in Japan. Japanese society, for the most part, treat politeness and friendliness as two separate entities.

Non french speakers are also less likely to move here. (you replied so fast lol)

@@paper-samawinter4312 Lol yes the language barrier is huge. Especially when it comes to jobs and friend groups. I'm curious, did they ever teach much bout the Acadians? My mom is Qubebecois and always said that they tend to neglect the French communities outside of Quebec, and all my Acadian friends hate going to quebec because people treat them poorly because of their accent lol. I don't speak french all that well though, but I worked in a museum for a few years mostly about acadian history. Glad we both can appriciate Yellowknife, the territories truly the most unique part bout canada. Also hope I don't sound like I'm interrogating you, I'm mostly curious since most of my friends are from the english speaking provinces, and my one friend who grew up mostly in quebec has family who was in the FLQ which is wild.

Cath Lemire I love Canadian stereotypes. They are hilarious. Lol! Have you seen any of the South Park episodes that depict Ottawa as the equivelant of Oz? So awesome. I live in Ottawa, too. So, that made it more hysterical. But yeah, Ive heard the igloo and fisherman thing. Whats REALLY depressing is that Japan is so far away and yet answered the questions so well while some Americans have trouble identifying basic stuff about us. Lol

I'm a Canadian and the capital has never been an important or stressed piece of information here. The only real way a Canadian would know is if they've taken a special interest in the nation or hear it come up on the news. We don't have problems like the United States, so citizens spend more time focusing on their politics rather than our own.

I was working at a language cafe in Tokyo a few months ago. Lots of people asked me if I liked maple syrup (I'm Canadian, woop woop!) and I said yes. The follow up would always be ehhhh do you put it on everything?? They meant like burgers and fries and all that jazz. But I don't. Apparently there was a TV programme that featured a Canadian who put it on burgers and sausages and everything in between xD People are so nice about Canada in Japan, it was really touching hearing what their answers were :)

Hi Rachel, Hi Jun! Lol American and Japanese thoughts on Canada seem to be pretty much the same. Maple Syrup, nature, cold, moose, bears, nice people. Negative stereotypes uh... More bears? That lie they call bacon? Strange mixes of French and English? Universal Healthcare? Idk. I've been to Canada a couple times and yeah the people there are really chill. It's nice. Also they don't fool around with their maple syrup, it's pretty great. I'd love to go back and see Niagara Falls someday.

Alyssa Schiffman Nothing wrong with universal healthcare! Think of it like Costco...the more people who sign up, the lower the prices we can get on things we need. And everyone needs healthcare. Maybe some people would prefer to have private healthcare through their steady job, but employment trends are changing. Young people are switching jobs more, working for smaller companies and start-ups which don't necessarily provide healthcare benefits. I would argue that if the US had universal healthcare, there would be more room for innovation. People entering the job market (or working people who want a change) could work at small innovative companies without fear that getting sick would bankrupt them. Just my thoughts!

I'm laughing at everyone saying "cold". I live on the west coast (Vancouver, we had the 2010 Olympics here) and we've had between 30C-40C temperatures for months. The week before last we were hotter than Jamaica and California, which isn't uncommon in summer. Plus a few of our provinces are dealing with brutal wildfires (in the hundreds) from all of the extreme heat and dryness, and we're having to fly in firefighters from Australia to help out. I don't even think it snowed more than one day here in the past two winters? Seriously guys, not all of Canada is cold. Plus British Columbia is gorgeous. Also, I'm dying at the bad stereotype is that we have nothing here! I'm more than happy to pretend we're all forest with no cities so we can stop overpopulation :P
