Rewriting “Concealer” by Gabbie Hanna I wear make up because I have acne. I have acne because I wear make up. I have bruises because I bother you. I bother to cover because I see your face in every black and blue. I hate blue jays because they remind me of you. But of course I’d never tell, for fear of more black and blue hues. So when you ask, I wear make up because I have acne. Not my best work, but I did this quick edit in 5 minutes to show what can happen if Gabbie just thought a little more about her work and the potential it could have in double meanings and worthy repetitions in words and in form if she just spent a little more time thinking and editing.

Another member of depression and anxiety club here. There are times when my conditions do cause me to read into things and pick up on subtext that might not really be there etc. If there is some in these, though, then it's...very very deeply buried indeed, 'cause I ain't seeing it. It's not even just that the poems aren't that deep - the two Shakespeare sonnets in this video are fairly straightforward! With these, though, the message lacks both depth and elegance in its execution.

My take on the concealer poem, trying to get the same emotions across that i think gabby was trying to portray Concealer This is the skin that I'm in. Wear it well, wear it thin. Embracing me warm and comforting; Pulling over me taught and suffocating. It is my most honest feature. Every crease and divet, bump and colour, Tells my story raw and real. A story far too raw and real, to feel. It keeps me together And for that I am grateful, It is perfectly mine And for that I am hateful.

Violet H. I think you’re totally right. It’s really clear to me that Gabbie still thinks she can get away with being irresponsible and toxic emotionally because she views and treats herself as a child. However, she romanticizes that persona and that really shows through the coined title and what she considers “deep” in her poetry. It’s honestly dangerous for her to keep romanticizing her behaviors especially regarding mental illness because she ends up justifying every bad habit she has without taking any responsibility for it. I think this poetry book honestly does say a lot about her in this way

"I wear make-up because I have acne/I have acne because I wear make-up" Girl, wash your face. Like, I do wear make-up and have acne, but I'm pretty sure my acne is because 1) I am on a hormonal birth control, and 2) I have depression, and sometimes go through periods where I don't wash my face.

Elisa Castro same. Plus a hormonal condition. But I don’t think makeup is worth my time (no shade, makeup is a beautiful art form, I’m just not passionate about it and don’t want to spend time to do it), and even I know, if you’re getting acne from your makeup, you either need to fix your skin care routine or your makeup is old/dirty and you need to replace/clean it.

also, a thought i had (and it might be completely false and illogical): good poetry should be understood and felt even when you don't know the context behind it. for example, knowing that Gabbie has struggled with weight and healthy lifestyle, i know that the "philosophy" poem is sort of a commentary on the "diet culture" and eating disorders. but when Rachel read that poem that was a play on "feeding the proverbial masses", i didn't know the author and her life story and i still understood and felt the deeper meaning behind it.

Here is my favourite: ”When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes I all alone beweep my outcast state, And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, And look upon myself, and curse my fate, Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, Featured like him, like him with friends possessed, Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope, With what I most enjoy contented least; Yet in these thoughts my self almost despising, Haply I think on thee, and then my state, Like to the lark at break of day arising From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate; For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings That then I scorn to change my state with kings.” (#29)

My reason, the physician to my love, Angry that his prescriptions are not kept, Hath left me, and I desperate now approve Desire is death, which physic did except. Past cure I am, now reason is past care, And frantic-mad with evermore unrest; My thoughts and my discourse as madmen's are, At random from the truth vainly express'd; For I have sworn thee fair and thought thee bright, Who art as black as hell, as dark as night."

These videos about Gabbie Hannah’s poetry is really helpful for me! I personally am trying to write a poetry book on my own, and all the points you makes and the criticism you give, I use to make my poetry better! So I love the series and would love more! 💓💞
