READ THIS BEFORE YOU COMMENT SOMETHING NEGATIVE: Some of you are upset that i titled this vlog "Failing a Med School Final" because I didn't reveal my score in this video. I want you to understand that I felt like a failure. I felt like I failed after finishing that exam. I did not know my score yet; however, feeling like you failed your favorite block feels AWFUL. I had to end the vlog because I had to take the night to myself to process the idea that I might have to retake the exam... I felt like a failure, and just because i didn't get my score in this vlog, doesn't mean that I didn't fail or feel like a failure. We all feel like failures some time and this vlog is to show that even people who may seem like they have their stuff together (not saying that's me), can also fail...I hope that although I didn't share my score with you, you still found guidance in the advice that i gave at the end of my video. Reminding ourselves that exams do not represent how much we know is soooo important. THAT is how i process my exam failures, by reminding myself of that. Thanks for understanding and continuing to be kind. Please remind yourself that I'm a human behind this screen, and that I do read your comments. Hi everyone! This week was a rough one! Completely agree that med is med is med, and I know that doctors graduating from all schools have worked tirelessly and are all going to be great practitioners. However, that does not mean that some schools are not more difficult to gain entry into than others in terms of having certain grades etc. So the point of stating the fact that it is the best school in the country, is to illustrate the point that you can turn your academic career around completely, regardless of how much you've stuffed it up.

One thing I know about Rachel is that she has possibly the highest possible standards to live up to of any human I have ever seen and is easily one of the most impressive people to live up to and beyond those standards. Small failures are bound to happen, but honestly, she’s probably talented enough to rule the world. Strong, brilliant and resilient are words that hardly do her justice. If you’re going to knock out the whole world, you might take a small hit every now and then. Wont change the fact that you’re a champion.

That feeling when you are completely saturated and cannot take in any more information but nothing in comparison to what is expected for a test, exam, etc. is genuinely the hardest part about school and so discouraging, not just you for sure.

I failed two of my classes and it was my first semester ever 🤦🏾‍♀️ I feel ashamed and I disappointed my parents. I worked my ass off, stoop up all night when everyone else was sleeping and I failed... I’m gonna say it is unfair, but maybe it is fair. Everything that we work hard on is gonna come back as a victory. Maybe not today or this week or this semester, but someday we’ll get results of everything that we worked hard on. We are not defined by our failures. I still have hope and I wish you do too. You’re not alone who’s struggling, we’ll get through this somehow.

Hey there :) I felt the same way too, failed my first year of biomed and had to retake the whole year. But what I realised is that all those hours I spent at the library and the sleep I lost actually contributed to my failure. So I felt like it was unfair because I spent so much time and got so sleep deprived. But what I realise this year is that sleep is SO important, and 5 hours of effective studying and testing myself is much better that 12 hours of forcing myself to read a textbook. Don't know if you're in the same situation, but failure can be an opportunity to fix our study methods and learn how to balance everything ☺️

The only things that help with that so far are getting up early (like 6ish) because then I've made the effort to get up and am less likely to procrastinate. Also studying "with" someone on Zoom, turning the camera off every time I take a break. Pomodoro method is also good

I remember in dental school I failed my first morphology exam and the gloom was real. I wasn't me for 2 days. But I picked up the pieces and carried on. You will too and you always do! At the end of the day you are going to provide the best patient care and have a huge heart. You can do anything.

I failed my first real exam my first semester in vet school. It happens and all you can do is learn and grow. I’m actually glad it happened because of how I grew from it! I always tell myself and the incoming classes below me that if you’re going to fail you want to do it in school where you are there to learn and if you have shortcomings whether it’s an exam, technical skill or patient encounter it’s okay! That’s why we are in school, to learn! This is the place to do it where your supervisors can correct you and teach you how to be better for yourself and your future patients. We all make mistakes and it’s how we grow into better humans and clinicians. You got this ❤️

So while no, my bachelors degree will not say “Pre-Med”, everything I have done to prepare me for medical school does.

Throughout the application cycle, I thought there was no way someone like me would get in when so many other qualified people were rejected but I couldn't stop myself from hoping. Lo and behold, got acceptances! You inspired me to work hard when I was burnt out and pushed me to stop being so critical of myself. How I went from being academically disqualified to having a 4.0 in Uni: After 1.5 years of Social Work classes (with a 3.8GPA) I finally admitted to myself Ive always wanted to be a dentist but always thought I was too dumb for that. But I had a day in the summer where I felt inspired that I just had to go for it bc I know if I never did, I’d look back one day and wish I could go back in time and try, or at least see what would have happened even if I failed trying. So I applied to the college in my town and started upgrading grade 11 and 12 Chem and Math and Physics bc I nEEEEEVER EVER NEVER EVER thought I’d be taking anything science related in uni... bc I was “too dumb” 😔🙄 so I didn’t take them in high school. Then in the spring semester, with Covid and my moms health and my terrible mindset of truly just waiting for myself to fail, I failed grade 12 chem & after taking it again in the summer I failed again. Not bc I couldn’t learn it, but bc I couldn’t get over feeling like a failure before even trying really so I would skip exams out of fear lol. So in the fall, I got an email saying my registration fell through and I was ACADEMICALLY DISQUALIFIED!!! 🤯😭😭😱🥺😬🙄😥😓🤯😭😭😭😭 and I thought “this is it. I’m done, I can’t do it” for months... thinking that this whole failing chem thing was my proof that I could never be good in school. After allowing myself to feel alll the feelings needed (bc you just rlly gotta feel in order to heal y’all- take care of your mind ❤️❤️❤️), I realized that I’ve always had a terrible relationship with school (also partly bc of some trauma as a kid from my dad and school) and I just realized like either I can live my whole life thinking that I can’t be good at school and just accept it, or I can finally admit to myself that I CAN be good at school if I don’t let this academic disqualification define me and if I heal my relationship with school. So long story short (lol already a long story I know), I’m currently in my first semester at Uni in Neuroscience with a minor in Spanish, and just before reading break (is that just a Canadian thing? Lol idk) I did two midterms which were the first grades of the semester, and got an A in them both. So so far so good!! So grateful. Knew I could do it!! 🥺 I’m so sooooo so happy I didn’t let the fact that I was academically disqualified ruin my dream of becoming a dentist. Bc the truth is: I was worried the whole time about how that would affect my schooling and that it was “impossible” to continue after that. But that wasn’t true at all. Sure, there were more obstacles I had to go through to get back on the path after being disqualified, but it wasn’t impossible. In fact I can say with 100% surety that being academically disqualified, or just failing HARD was the best thing that happened to me in my academic career. It’s made me flip a 180 and really reevaluate everything in my life. And it’s given me a drive and a “why” whenever school is hard now bc I know what it was like to fail and I feel a fire under me to succeed. Anyway 😭😭😭 I just had to share my failure. To anyone still reading this lol: just know what YOU ARE GOING TO FAIL AT SOMETHING BC YOU ARE HUMAN. BUT YOU GET TO CHOOSE IF YOURE GOING TO ACCEPT THE FAILURE AND LET IT DEFINE YOU, OR IF YOURE GOING TO LEARN THE LESSON FAILURE IS TRYING TO TEACH YOU AND GROW BECAUSE OF IT. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Things that helped me along the way (even though I’m still very much on the journey still): Rachel’s vlogsssss 🥺🥰❤️😭- seriously Rachel you helped me build a voice of compassion towards myself and Ill thank you forever for that, the book “Make It Stick” seriously taught me thee best study techniques every like using things like Anki instead of underlining and rereading the textbook, giving myself PERMISSION TO TAKE BREAKS, mandatory sleeping schedule with 30 mins at the same time every night & morning, meditation, and doing my best to catch every negative thought about myself and school and replacing it with a positive compassionate response EVERY TIME, not procrastinating by using Time Blocks & yah 🤗

I don’t mean it to be religious or linked to any ideology, just that a calling is someone you’ve been drawn to- like no matter what else you do this other thing stays with you. At least that’s exactly how I felt about dentistry. No matter what else I did, I didn’t feel the same pull to any of those things as I did dentistry. This “pull”- this “purpose” is what to refer back to when you start in the fall. When you doubt if you made the right decision going into medicine. I found that motivation didn’t help me in the toughest times of school, but thinking about my “why” did. I hope school goes well for you. As far as 20yes going by before deciding on medicine, remember that the time it takes to be a Dr. will inevitably pass anyway, so you might as well be spending the time doing something you love. It’s never ever too late!!! Good luck on your studies! 🤗

I am NEVER defined by my failures. What defines me is the values I possess as a human being. It is the efforts that I have given in that matters and NOT the results. As long as I am satisfied with efforts I put in its enough. Edit: I know it's long paragraph but plsase read if interested! Sometimes we feel that after so much hardwork too we didn't get the results we desired. And ukw I faced this during pandemic....I after so much of war with myself have come to a peace that maybe the others put in special efforts that I couldn't at that point. But since I know that I have worked hard enough for it,it's fine I am satisfied with my efforts and eventually will learn more about what went wrong and improve. I am a RED ANT 🐜. Pharm is tough. I failed my final and had to take a remedial comprehensive exam to pass the course and did. Stick with it, no matter what the score ends up being just focus on what the next step is.

I'm in first year of dental school and I failed a few of my subjects as well. It took me a long time to realise that failure is a part of life and while right now, this seems like such a big thing, it does not define me or my career. Hi Rachel! I'm a first year med student and a lot of what you said in this vlog feels so similar to my experience thus far. I feel like all the exams we take just have soooooo much info that you could have studied a good portion of it really well, but if they decide not to test it, you're out of luck. A lot of exams have made me feel like a failure even if I didn't fail them. I have no idea how to describe it other than it leaves you feeling defeated, which just feels awful when you put so much time and effort into studying. It makes me sad that some people clicked on this video to watch you fail. I clicked because I wanted to see if other people feel how I feel. Our class is really disjointed because of being online and you only hear from people who are doing really well. Although I'm sad that exam made you feel the way it did, it was comforting to me in a way. I've had so many ups and downs in just a short few months and I know we're bound to have even more. We just have to keep on keeping on :) So, thank you for being so transparent in your videos and giving this girl a bit of her sanity back.

I really needed this way more than I realized bc you're one of the smartest people I "know", and one of the most motivating, productive, get-stuff-done people, and it's so validating to know that even though you're so smart, you still mess up and have to try again. I'm tryna remind myself that, just like you wouldn't rely on the scale to tell you your body fat percentage, you can't rely on tests to tell you whether you're smart "enough", or whether you're suited for the job. There are things that hinder our success and make it look like we can't do smth when in reality we can - all we need are the right tools! I LOVE the hydro boost - man it feels so good, like actual water, and it smells amaaaazing. I love your tips too. and every time someone says "get in the zone" I think "autozone" and it was so satisfying to hear you say it LOL

I totally was dreading college coming in because I never passed a single AP Exam. This included a 1 in Chemistry, AP Stats, US history, Psychology, and got a 2 in calculus. Was not accepted into the honor society in my high school due to my low GPA and only got a 23 on my ACT after taking it 8x. I have came to college and have a 3.90 GPA as a chemistry major (Pre-Pharmacy). I know this is a medical school vlog, but I love watching your videos so much and have watched you from day one (Shaun Anderson is so amazing too). I also am now one of the head Chemistry, Organic chemistry, Calculus, and physics tutors at my university where I have worked there 500+ hours. To those who think you aren't enough, you are!

It’s so nice to have someone to relate to on this, even if I’m in undergrad right now! I’ve always be very resilient with my studies but I failed my first gen chem 2 exam recently and I’m trying not to let failure make me feel like I’m not capable of reaching my dream of being a physician. That pessimistic side is the worst.And I agree,sometimes I wonder why I still don't get the score that I want although I feel as if I got it together. But I've learned to cope with tht bad feeling by telling myself that I did&give the best I could.

I'm a biomed undergrad major and I usually just talk to myself also as my way of studying. It really does help. Also, that stress sweat is real, you're not the only one. Also, here's a tip that might help you get out of that funk when you just don't feel like studying: switch up your environment. You spend so much time in your room, try studying in the living room or outdoors.

OMGG rach i had my burnout days literally a couple days ago but then I found my motivation again. I read somewhere "Bathing doesn't last forever, which is why we recommend you do it daily. Similarly, motivation doesn't last forever either" or something like that, i really hope that helps you, because it helped me and ahh you know how you say "you attract what you are" so in this case, you attracted someone who is as motivated as you for medicine, but just need tiny boosts sometimes. love you so so much hon, YOU GOT THIS AND SO DO I!! Last year i failed my university enterance exams. Believe me when i tell you "i know how you feel". I finished high school, i didn't pick a university and started it because i couldn't get into the med school. All i have been doing this year was studying. Nothing more nothing less. Just studying. Because i know that i wanna be a doctor. And just for the sake of this week's practice here i am saying "I can do this. My failuere does not determine who I am. This year is my year." :) So just try to go forward. That's what i am trying to do. I know how hard you study Rachel and i looovvveee you.

Girl I feel you on the skin picking, it is such a vicious stress-pick-stress cycle!!! The temptation is real, even when we know it's counterproductive. I talked to my PCP about it and her assessment/treatment's got my mind and skin in a wayyyy better state - you got this!!!!

*reads your pinned post* Oh my goodness... Rachel, I click every single one of your videos and watch you consistently because you are relatable, you're real. I feel like we could sit down at the kitchen table and chat about the hardships of studying medicine over coffee type relatable... and its because you're going through some of the same stuff I am; the up and down emotions, the hours upon hours of studying, the trying your best and praying you've retained enough to do well... and now, the "so over it" and "I just want to get out of this room"... You are beautiful both inside and out, and even if you failed that silly test it isn't a representation of your value as a person... The negative nelly's need to go jump off a cliff. There will always be "those people" who hope for others to fail and use others failures to make themselves feel better. But don't let them get to you during a vulnerable moment. You are too good for that...

I came to this channel because it appeared on my recommend. I finished my bachelor's back in May and during that time I was considering pharmacy in my country. I struggled with that because I thought I wouldnt be too competitive or too good. I enrolled in a masters degree instead, it made me realize that I really want to pursue pharmacy. I failed my Pharmacology test in January and felt like I can’t handle anymore. I was studying so much and couldn’t pass one test? But I prepared for retake so well that after all I was super glad that I failed 😅 however that sounds it made me understand the material better and showed me that I’m just a human being with my ups and downs. Don’t compare yourself with other just go through it. Medicine is all about developing, every experience is helping you to define yourself as a doctor and a person. Just put your white coat and go on ! Let yourself cry and be angry for a moment and then do what you can do the best ! Wish you luck

I took the MCAT in June of 2020 and scored sub-500. I was crushed and wondered if my dreams of becoming a physician were over. I buckled down and spent about 3 months grinding and improved my score by 9 points in September of 2020, passing the 500 mark. That failure taught me so much, and I’m going to be a better physician and person because of it!! Your failures may shape you, but they don’t define you!

I'm approaching finals week of my 2nd quarter of vet school! I had my first practical today and, one of the tasks was to measure a plasma protein concentration. I'm not sure if this is done the same way in medical school, but I have to break a hematocrit tube and dump out plasma onto a refractometer to get a measurement... except that I couldn't get enough plasma out of the hematocrit tube before I ran out of time and had to guess an answer. I definitely cried because I'm not sure if I failed that part of the practical or not but I'm keeping my head held high and hoping for the best. Watching your videos is the best, not only because I get to see what's going on in the human side of medical school, but your positivity is the best

If you like reading out loud, try reading out loud & walking at the same time, I do this (using my ipad for the slides) and walk around my garden outside, this way i can also soak up some sun. This retention method does wonders!!
