As someone studying psychology and looking to go into Psychiatry, I hope you can talk to someone about your stress. Whether it be another student (who will likely be able to understand what you are going through), a professor, or a counselor on campus, just talk to someone when it gets overwhelming. Physicians and medical students are some of the highest effected groups of depression and anxiety disorders (suicide rates for physicians are really high). People do care about you and want to help you get through these stressful times. And even if you want to talk to us about it through youtube that can help. You are strong, I can tell. Stay strong! You're an inspiration to many of us who are going into the medical field and I thank you for it.

orbitzz Hey, don’t worry too much about it for now. If you haven’t even graduated high school, then you still have a really long time to think about what you wanna do with your future. There’s no need to rush things in life, even though that’s what society tells us to do. “Hurry up and pick what you wanna do for the rest of your life!” like I don’t think people realize how big of a decision that it is for people in our age range (16-25 yrs old) when we’re still trying to figure ourselves out in life. Another tidbit of advice is to just take things one piece at a time, and don’t stress out about the next thing until you get there. If you try to think in a Macro sense (so like, trying to think about everything all at once) you will easily overwhelm and unnecessarily stress yourself out more. Just focus on things one step at a time. You will be okay! 🙂 If med school is your true passion, then go for it! You can definitely do it.

Gabe Rillman I needed some motivation, thank you! All these KZbin videos with these people stressing out about med school really make me feel unmotivated for it and I question myself if I really want to go in to this different lifestyle...
@gaberillman67784 жыл бұрын
M3z4_5 Man don’t even stress it! We all feel the exact same way (being unmotivated) at one time or another. If anybody says that they haven’t felt unmotivated or lazy at least a few times in their lives then they’re just straight up lying. It’s human nature to feel that way. Don’t ever give up man! And don’t worry too much either. Being passionate about what you want to do will get you through it no matter how challenging and daunting it may seem.
@bonnibelbuboltz92344 жыл бұрын
@@m3z4_58 Ok aside from the stresses of school, you also need to consider other factors. People get sold on the idea that medical school is the ticket to a life of great income and personal fulfillment, and while that can be true, it's not universal. The reality for many is coming out of years and years of intense schooling (which is lost income potential for those years) with mind-boggling amounts of debt, starting in a field that's saturated with competition out of your ears and doing work that demands a ton of your time and mental energy. There will be many who love it. There will also be many who hate it, but are stuck thanks to their huge loan payments. It is like the saying goes: medicine is for those who cannot see themselves doing anything else. I saw myself doing something else.

As a third year, trust me the struggle is real. People been telling me since day 1, hell since high school, that i wouldnt make it. That I was too dumb... I thought i was going to fail term 1, I didn’t, I thought I would fail second year, I didn’t, I thought I would fail step 1, I didn’t. It’s been a long road, sleeping at 3am is normal, but one thing I’ve learned over the years is to believe in yourself. I used to compare myself everyday, I’m not smart, how did they finish, how did they do so well, etc etc. Trust in the work you put in, and trust in yourself that you’ll be ok. Life is not all about studying, and if we fails that’s ok, everyone fails. You get your butt back up and do it again. To imagine the class clown and kid who didn’t do any work in high school is almost going to make it, is a good feeling, your going to make it. Grind it out and god bless

I'm now in my third year of medicine, and not only does the course make you feel inadequate at times, but the people around you. Not to say people are terrible in medicine, but you realise how smart, hard working, and competent everyone around you is (especially compared to yourself). But I think it's definitely important to realise everyone is on the same boat. The other day I saw one of my friends (who I thought always had her stuff together) cry at the gym because she suddenly felt the stress hit her. It really didnt hit me until this year that whether you seem on top of it or not... medicine is another beast. just remember everyone is going through the same thing, don't get discouraged :D

The smell itself doesn‘t really bother me but time after time it reminds me of endless hours of hard studying and failing anyways. I‘m going to be on my third try on an oral anatomy exam in 4 weeks. I studied like hell and couldn‘t have given it any more effort but it seems as if it just wasn‘t enough. I‘m tired of failing. That one oral exam is my last chance. Wish me luck guys.

Nah don't worry. If you learn Anki and interleaving now, then medical school will be much more manageable. Look up the 20 rules of formulating knowledge and videos on Anki (the anking, glutanimate, and this one KZbinr whose name I forgot are good channels). Watch Thomas Frank (collegeinfogeek) and Ali Abdaal's videos on studying, and of course apply what you learn to the above, sort of like wishing for more wishes. Make flashcards for them too. Once you've built a knowledge base and more importantly good study habits, go to gen.lib.rus.ec and apply your knowledge to the books "what smart students know" (explains how to crirically read a book), "how to be a high school superstar", "ultralearning", "atomic habits", other books by Cal Newport, "superhuman" by Dave asprey, and self hypnosis by Forbes Blair or Roger Strauss or the new psycho-cybernetics, and maybe the sat black book. (for more prep resources, check out 1600.io(a little free), santasat, UWorld(paid), satpanda books for math, Erica meltzer books for English, collegeboard tests for tests (these are precious - ration them out throughout your study career, keeping in mind time for retakes), andthe Princeton review 2020 premium book for problems and tests). Make sure you are turning all of these resources into really good Anki flashcards and keeping up with your reviews, otherwise this is all little better than entertainment. Stretch yourself by taking dual enrollment classes/AP classes in non-STEM subjects and courses on MIT opencourseware courses. Once quarantine is over, you can start taking CLEP exams (free vouchers at modernstates.org) and see which community colleges offer credit by departmental challenge exam. One you've take an MIT course, you can then take the challenge exam and get credit. You can potentially get your associate's before graduating high school, but keep in mind this might affect your scholarship eligibility at some colleges. If you get really good at Anki, you might want to consider ankifying Campbell biology + a little plant anatomy and competing in your state's biology Olympiad.

Hey there, Rachel! I am a 4th-year medical student. I just wanted to say that I am proud of you for pushing through, but remember to take time for things that you love outside of school. Focusing only on med school is HUGE mistake I have seen many of my colleagues make and it has burned them out before they even hit residency. It is extremely important that you keep connections with the people you love and DO NOT let medical school make you feel isolated/not good enough. Imposter syndrome is real and the best way to combat that is to surround yourself with people who lift you up. My family and friends help to keep me grounded. I am not #1 in my class but I am one of the most peaceful/happiest. I refuse to sacrifice myself or my relationships with others for medicine. You are a strong person and you deserve to live your best life, even in med school. :)

Med school is not supposed to be easy and it is completely normal to be overwhelm. What matters is when you wipe off those tears and hit the books again. The first two years are definitely the hardest and then it will all be easy and breezy from then on. Hang in there !! But then I always look back at how much I've accomplished to get to this point and say that there is no going back now I've worked hard for this and it's a challenge I took years back and I'll still take it. Balance, although it’s not easy in medical school is very important to prevent burnout.

I feel you. As a fellow medical student handling the rough environment of med school everyday since the last 2.5 years, I just want to pitch a few points. Medical school gets frustrating, monotonous and depression can creep in very soon. I cope with it by trying to shut down the stress by shutting off the books for a couple minutes and changing the "pattern" - jumping rope for a while in my room, maybe shower and once I feel the panic attack is kinda gone, I just sit down with a fresh mind. One thing that really helps is making notes from 4 or 5 books (read : model answers for various type of questions for a subject). If it helps, Medical School is actually enjoyable if you work on an effort-oriented way and not worrying about results. Sleep well, and hope to see you make a mark on the field. :)
