This is the sound of my childhood, and I suppose, as a Swansea boy, it's the sound of my culture. But really, a Welsh male voice choir singing praise to the Lord itranscends the personal. It's quite simply the sound of civilization at its peak.

Sang the first verses in Welsh to the curator and staff of the Welsh Pioneers museum in Trelew, Argentina last week. With my very rough translation of the call to stand for Christ, the folk at the museum were grateful and pleased for a "whiff" of Wales and the gospel of Christ that so animated the Revival.

In the mid 1960s I was working in Bridgend, a town of about 35,000 people west of Cardiff and east of Swansea. Sometimes on Friday evenings after work some of the local chaps would head off to the Bridgend Rugby Club which was situated, fittingly enough, on the Brewery Field! Anyway, when we were there I found myself singing Welsh hymns as I drank Welsh beer. The combining of hymns, beer and a pub was something I had never experienced in my native Ireland where hymns were sung only in Catholic churches at Mass or during 'evening devotions, a feature of Catholic life still remembered only by old guys like me - born in Cork City in 1938. This wonderful Welsh hymn was one of those that got the special Brewery Field treatment...

Brings back memories of the north terrace at the old Arms Park for international matches in the 1950's, when every one knew the words and sang the hymns. St Albans band on the pitch with a brilliant conductor who kept the band in time with the crowd! Hopeless task on one occasion though---the north terrace and stand were singing Rachie {I Bob un sydd ffyddlon} while the south terrace and stand sang Calon Lan. Great experience for a teenager. Some of the games weren't bad either.

I heard this on a cassette tape many decades ago, but knew no Welsh. So, I worked out the metre, and searched my Methodist Hymn Book to find a matching set of words. There were two: Onward, Christian Soldiers, and Forward Be Our Watchword. I really enjoyed juggling the words and syllables to fit the tune. The bass line is a sheer delight. I'm not sure, but I think the composer named the tune after his daughter Rachel.

It's the words that one should sing..Not the music!! The music is only there as accompaniment to the deep truths expressed by these hymns. The words are inspired - the music is Not!
@levicopp3224
@levicopp3224 4 жыл бұрын
@@garethifan1034 Not really. Lyrics giving praise to God and richly expressed are enhanced by inspired music. The reformer Martin Luther was a talented in music and the great composer Bach used some of his hymn melodies and lyrics in Cantatas. The most notable being " A might Fortress is our God"
@garethifan1034

@@levicopp3224 You make a different , but valuable point. My point referred to the over emphasis that is often found in singing to the music (as we often do in Wales) whilst forgetting or ignoring the substance of the words. The music may, on occasion be inspired, but music without words is only that..music. The words embody the soul's worship of God, therefore the music is only and always a means to an end - no more.

david stuart , Many folk do not want to be ‘free of the English’. The SNP are another version of Socialism which takes more tax from everyone each year. Those who commit sin are slaves to their own desires. Prayer is the currency of the believer. No matter what outfit gets into power the same laws are reinforced - nasty same sex education in primary schools , abortion , drug dealers with the police in their pockets, euthanasia around the corner. If there were ten honest men in a political party they would be worth voting for. At the moment all the parties are similar. We need a Christian conviction politician. Independence is an illusion. All we’d get is another form of Godless socialism. Pray to end abortion. Socialism is the flip side of communism - two sides of the same coin.

@@Randolph1233 - you miss the point! It is up to the people who live in Scotland and Wales to determine , through a democratic vote , what colour the rosette those they appoint to lead them should be, irrespective of their nationality ,colour of skin or ability to speak their native tongue, ( although that would be better) and not the present system of the overlords in Westminster.

Rachie WAS NOT Caradog Roberts daughter. The name of the tune derives from a visit in 1918 by Caradog Roberts to the Jerusalem Chapel in Resolven.The minister of the Jerusalem chapel was Parchedig (Rev) Robert Enoch Williams His daughter was ‘'Rachie'‘ although christened ‘Rachel’. Roberts introduced his tune to the Cymanfa Ganu in Jerusalem Chapel He wrote to the Rev R.E. Williams and asked if he could name the tune after the minister’s 12 year old daughter ‘Rachie’.

Why are so many male voice choirs dissatisfied with Roberts' closing line, and have to add the chorus from Mawlgan at the end. It spoils it for traditionalists such as myself. I love Rachie and I love Mawlgan, but seperately please.
