I think he was overlooked in part as Horowitz and Rubinstein were still the playing regularly in the 50s, and then as they were leaving the stage - an entire crop of younger pianists like Van Cliburn, Browning, Grafman, Fleisher, Wilde etc. were grabbing the spotlight in public media - like the Ed Sullivan Show. And Russia was finally opening up and letting Gilels and Richter travel. So there was a lot of competition. And Bolet's demeanor on stage was not as showy as others. As we see today, it is not always the best pianists who get the most attention. I think he is finally getting the full recognition that alluded him in his lifetime.

I didn't imagine! This is a true, absolute master performance! I knew another and later one by Bolet, also wonderful but quite standard, in time and choices. This one, instead, seems unique to me! And together with the great direction by Julius Rudel, so rich of interesting choices in times and colors, Bolet gives an excellent and very modern antiromantic reading of this marvelous piece!

As for your question about Bolet remaining low-profile - it had less to do with his character than with the behaviour of his partner/manager, who was incredibly brusque and had a habit of blurting out wholly inappropriate comments ...

Tex? I wish byrce M would write that damn biography of Bolet! Someone needs to tell the story one day.

But Bolet was the pianist, not his manager. Who cares about the rude manners of the manager? I want Bolet 😐

@@kaleidoscopio5 management could not deal with the personality conflicts with the manager, and so often chose not to book him...

@@ThePianoFiles that is terrible. And why Bolet didn't fire him? 🤨

Clarity and energy a-plenty here, but also space where needed. The recorded sound is a bit dry and boxy, but one can hear through that.

Do you also have the encore he played and did Mr Black work on this as well? The encore was the Rachmaninoff Etude-tableau in E-flat Major Op 33, No 7, a work Mr. Bolet never recorded. It was included when the concert was (and maybe still is) available to stream on the website of WNYC.
