Wow, I'm totally blown away. I've been dying to hear someone tackle this on organ for forever, and boy, this DELIVERS! My deep appreciation for this piece through years of listening and analysis put it among the most heart-wrenching, and evocative pieces out there. Jonathan captures the essence and timbre of the orchestra perfectly. I feel that Rachmaninoff himself would have been immensely proud to witness his work interpreted with such precision and artistry on the organ. Bravo, Jonathan!

What a gorgeous performance of a sublime piece of music! As usual, Jonathan has transcribed the piece so that it sounds like it was written for the organ in the first place! I love this symphony and hope Jonathan plans to transcribe the rest of it! Thanks to Tom for the visual tour of the basilica, and its magnificent sculptures and architecture! This is quite an audio-visual treat! ❤🎹 🌞

I can appreciate the need for stored air to keep up with the Organist. But this is heavenly. Well done. All I can do is tap at the little keyboard and pretend to be making some kind of noise. But this... its wonderful.

What a giant of a performance. The endurance and the fliar leaves me speechless. You really leverage on the instrument and the acoustics. The orchestra's sounds caress you, but here the Adagio just showers on you from the top!

We are again drawn into Jonathan's glistening web of captivating music as his spiderlike fingers amble across the keyboards. His elegant registrations complement the enchanting theme and I am enamored with each reappearance. Breathtaking, both sight and sound. Amazing transcription and performance. Bravo!! 💗💗 💐💐🎹🎶

That was a wonderful transcription & incredible performance of this romantic piece. The views of the Basilica were so beautiful Tom. It's a shame about the massive reverb though. I'd love to hear you play it on an organ with a kinder acoustic so that we could appreciate all the little nuances we may have missed. Gorgeous piece nontheless. Thanks for uploading. xx.

I agree about wishing to hear this transcription in a place with a "kinder acoustic", and I'm hoping Jonathan will include it in future programs at other venues. 😊
@chatboy2511 ай бұрын
I would love to hear it performed on the organ in Bridgwater Hall in Manchester, or better still the organ in the National Kaohsiung Center for the Art. in Weiwuying. I don't know if it's the acoustic of the building that causes the reverberation and reduces the clarity of the lines in place. Fantastic arrangement, as always, Jonathan

@@chatboy25 I'm not a fan of the organ at Bridgewater Hall, but there are so many other organs in England alone that Jonathan has played that would be wonderful for this Adagio, like Chester, Royal Albert Hall, Hereford, even Albion and Ripon.
@chatboy2511 ай бұрын
Yes, any of those would be fine. Always had a soft spot for Albion which is the instrument he probably knows best. You can even include those in civic buildings like Rochdale, Manchester .Huddersfield, Leeds, and Blackburn @@Video7Rose

Just had my first opportunity to listen to this on a decent sound system - the acoustic range of the organ and the church, along with a masterful transcription, has evoked more emotional insight to this movement than the best full orchestral version I have heard - magnificent!! (One of the best prior recordings I know of before this is Andre Previn conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in 1973). Jonathan & Tom - Thank you! (So when does this come to Bridgewater Hall or Ripon Cathedral?)

The Basilica has thousands of visitors a day so Jonathan had to record this (and the rest of the Online concert) during the night as otherwise there would have been too much ambient noise. If I remember correctly Jonathan and Tom said in the accompanying vlog to this that with preparation and recording they finally left the Basilica at 4.30 in the morning !
