Rachmaninov The Isle of the Dead Op. 29 - Hendrik Burkard, Cavaillé-Coll organ, Madeleine, Paris

Louis Robilliards transcription of Rachmaninovs Symphonic poem played on the Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Madeleine church in Paris.
Sergei Rachmaniov (1873-1943) is said to have first encountered and been deeply impressed by the famous painting "The Isle of the Dead" by the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) during his stay in Paris in 1907. The painting, of which the artist produced five versions between 1880 and 1886, enjoyed great popularity at the fin de siecle and far beyond. Originally created as a commissioned work for a young widow, "The Isle of the Dead" with its dark, morbid aura is often understood as a symbolist expression of the decline of "old" European culture on the threshold of the modern technological age.
Böcklins impressive piece of art became the subject of numerous works of art in the fields of music, painting, literature and film.
Rachmaninov composed his symphonic poem during a stay in Dresden in 1909 and conducted the premiere in Moscow just two weeks after the work was completed in April 1909.

On dit que Serge Rachmaninov (1873-1943) fut profondément impressionné par L'île des morts, tableau d’Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) qu’il découvrit à Paris en 1907. L’œuvre, dont cinq versions voient le jour entre 1880 et 1886, a toujours fasciné public et artistes. Elle inspire de nombreux échos en musique, en peinture, en littérature et au cinéma. On a souvent vu dans l’aspect sombre et morbide de la toile - commandée par une jeune veuve -, l’avatar symboliste d’une culture européenne vieillie et déclinante, à l’aube d’une ère moderne vouée à la technique. Composé lors d'un séjour à Dresde, le poème symphonique de Rachmaninov est créé à Moscou deux semaines après son achèvement, en avril 1909, sous la direction du musicien.

Das Gemälde, von denen der Maler zwischen 1880 und 1886 fünf Versionen anfertigte, genoss zum Fin de siecle und weit darüber hinaus eine ungebrochene Popularität. Ursprünglich als Auftragsarbeit für eine junge Witwe entstanden, wird die „Die Toteninsel“ mit ihrer düsteren, morbiden Ausstrahlung oft auch als symbolistischer Ausdruck des Untergangs der „alten“ europäischen Kultur an der Schwelle zum modernen technologischen Zeitalter verstanden.
Böcklins beeindruckendes Kunstwerk wurde zum Thema zahlreicher anderer Werke in Musik, Malerei, Literatur und Film.
Rachmaninov komponierte seine Sinfonische Dichtung während eines Aufenthaltes in Dresden 1909. Er selbst dirigierte die Uraufführung in Moskau nur zwei Wochen nach Fertigstellung des Werkes im April 1909.

Madeleine looks like such a fun organ to play, its very much (to me) like a more compact and "hidden" Notre Dame organ, the sound is massive, and the church is just pretty to look at! the electric console seems super responsive and convenient to operate, especially for when improvising!

Très modeste organiste moi-même, je n'arrive pas à comprendre quel intérêt de jouer des morceaux qui ne sont pas faits pour cet instrument. Même s'il s'agit d'une transcription. N'y a-t-il pas assez de partitions d'orgue véritables ? Quand je vois de grands organistes jouer la Marseillaise, la Chevauchée des Walkyries ou la Fantastique de Berlioz, els bras m'en tombent. C'est navrant.

La transcription est un merveilleux moyen de faire découvrir et accéder l'instrument à un public qui de base ne s'intéresserait pas à l'orgue, pour cause d'un mauvais amalgame Orgue = Église. Faite le test, jouer un prélude de Bach (aussi beau qu'il soit) et la transcription de la Danse Macabre de Saint-Sëans, l'individu qui n'a pas d'intérêt pour l'orgue ira sans hésiter vers la danse macabre... Et puis la transcription est un merveilleux moyen de découvrir l'orgue autrement de découvrir une nouvelle infinité de mélanges... Personnellement, je pense que la transcription doit faire partie intégrante du répertoire pour orgue.

@@jojolatouille4503 et on pourrait signaler à Mr Wiernsperger que un certain JS Bach n'a pas arrêté, sa vie durant de se compromettre à ce genre de "conneries"... il est vrai qu'il devait sans doute compenser un manque d'inspiration.. N'est ce pas Monsieur Wiernsperger?

Il faut comprendre que quatre claviers + un pédalier + la sollicitation des jeux et combinaisons, ne permettent pas -en général- à l'interprète d'avoir l'aisance d'un pianiste!
