Casey Putsch talks about the finer points of driving a manual transmission in the Genius Garage 1988 IMSA Corvette while racing at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course as part of the series for everyday and new drivers as well as the sportsman. Toe-heel downshifting, double clutching shifts, single clutching shifts, how much to slip a clutch, right and left foot braking, while winning a race.

Time keeps ticking on and those old boys club members are gonna start to run out of time rather quickly and then realise, that because they’ve been so snobbish and self obsessed for their own ego boosting racing, there aren’t any passionate young drivers in that series to carry it on and their legacy will die with them. Their loss. Genius garage is great. Keep it up Casey!!

I’ve taken my youngest daughter and two grandchildren to Mid-Ohio for their Teen Defensive Driving courses. They all had a great time, learned an lot and watched cars on track. My daughter called me from school one day to thank me for sending her. She drove around a 4-wheel drive pickup that was sideways in a ditch on an icy road. This video brought back those memories. I hope to get back there someday. Thank you.

Wow, that was truly inspiring to watch. To see how you not just raced the car but paced yourself. It’s easy to go ten tenths, but it’s much more nuanced and requires so much more focus to be fast AND have so munch mechanical empathy. I’m planning on getting into Lemons racing and am going to keep many of my takeaways from the video in mind when I start racing.

I love seeing this, especially the left foot brake checking, makes total sense but never crossed my mind. Might be worth a discussion to inform on why brake checking is done. A lot of people want the "race" baking system but do not understand the potential significant drawbacks of such systems on a street car - piston knock back can be real unsettling.... As always great content - and now that people are noticing the subs are growing!!!

When I first started messing with cars, there was a man who gave me loads of advice. Along with 4 hour's detailed instruction on changing out an intake manifold on a smallblock Chevy. One thing he said that pertain's to your situation, "What comes around goes around, time is irrelevant". Out the nearly 40 years since I was given that advice. I've watched karma play out so often, I'm very confident in saying these old boys will run into trouble. Best part of it all you don't need to do a thing. They will do all the work for you. All you have to do is sit back and watch the show. After my experience with the man that taught me so much, I'm always trying to pass along advice or at least tell a few stories with the kids I run across. I was once one of them, I only wish I had the experience of Genius Garage.

That was awesome! It was really interesting to watch the interplay between the hands and the footwork. Could you do a video on controlling slides? Obviously in an AWD car like my daily you can look like a hero without much effort but I'd love some more info on controlling a RWD car when they start to get a bit loose like you had on that last turn.
@rel04ding58
@rel04ding58 4 жыл бұрын
i mean, you can look up drift tutorials, it helps knowing how to controll slides, sim racing also helps a insane ammount when it comes to improving your driving skills, but when the car begins to slide from my few months of sim racing, either you counterstear fast enaugh or you'll spin, but it's relativly easy to avoid contact and if you controll your throttle and brake inputs well, you dont need to worry about spinning, however, be carefull with the condition of your tyres, dont try being a hero on 2yo tyres that are hard or cracked or bald, drive safe and it's pritty intuitive how to correct the car, sry if i wasn't much of a help, gl buddy.
@rel04ding58
@rel04ding58 4 жыл бұрын
also i forgot to add, the key to avoid sliding and to correct it is to be smooth and dont overdrive your car until you have enaugh confidence

Love your work, man! My favorites so far are the Thunderbird vids (especially the Behind the Scenes as those guys don't get as much glory as the pilots to the general public, non-aviation geeks), and left lane hogs episodes. Keep on those left lane hog videos as you might make a change. Keep on supporting our country and military!! Keep on making things you love as well as passion makes for a great channel and INFLUENCER! Also, if you need a mule who will learn and do what is asked in your businesses to help out, I'm here, free agent after Covid-19 release and will work for free or minimum until I can prove myself. Not that it really matters, but I got a BS in Information Sciences and Technology from a nice big, Big 10 school that I had a long uphill climb to get into, along with more valuable real world experience.

On hard brakings such as 7:50, you double clutch it, but not rev-matching ? Is that a mistake ? It feels like the delay between the blip and the clutch release just make it slip rather than a smooth downshift

Just changed my oil today on my 2002 Nissan Altima. It's an automatic car, so I left foot brake. Started fooling around with the slosh and see semi-automatic gear-mode and honestly it makes the car a whole lot better, but I can't downshift without my transmission giving a huge kick to the front wheels. The automatic mode makes it shift from first to second below 2k RPM and it just robs the car of power.

Great information Casey! One thing I have wondered for years is why some drivers repeatedly stab (or let off) the gas mid turn. You can see good examples in rally racing pretty regularly, but also in that classic video of Ayrton Senna in the NSX. It is attempts to reduce wheel spin? Or induce wheelspin to rotate the car? Some other reason I havent thought of?

A question regarding clutchless shifting when accelerating: Doesn't it actually slow down the car a tad more than clutched shifting? I can't get rid of the idea that right after the gear pops in, you have a moment of engine braking, because you can't open the throttle in the exact same moment.
