Great video, I’ve just been through this, after always having sports bikes I switched to Road Glide. Had never ridden anything like it, not even a cruiser. I have the 107 twin cooled and it is always two up, it pulls well, gets 40mpg no matter how you ride it and it does embarrass some 600 riders when you keep up with them. They do eventually fuck off, but its fun watching them check their mirrors and thinking, that fat bassa is still with me....aye, I am! Thank you for the viewing. Gee.

So with you Steve. Not a cruiser fan, nor a HD fan, but was offered a stupidly good deal on a Street Glide. Rode it from Cape Town to Johannesburg in South African winter, and I fell in love. I think it was cruising down a divided highway in winds gusting to 70 kms or so. The SG was in cruise at 130 kms and I was riding with one hand, dead straight and perfectly comfortable while watching compact cars getting pushed all over the road. The beast just works, and works with character.

I'm glad someone is showing how well Harley's bikes handle for a heavy machine. I was one of those who swore up and down that their tech was out dated, their handling was poor, and that I'd never own one. That all changed after I rode one. It may be too late for HD, but if they want to entice both new and older riders to their brand, then this is the type of setting they need to be more associated with imho. Let them be seen going head to head with the other manufacturer's touring/bagger machines on a professional track so we can finally put that old, stale argument to rest. It may be their only option at this point.

Great video John. I am also at that stage where I am looking at other styles/types of bikes that I have never ridden. Fast is fun, but comfort is something that appeals to me a lot more now than when I was younger. Australia is a large chunk of dirt, so a machine that offers me the best levels of comfort is most definitely going to end up in my garage. Not interested in looking cool, or being part of the crowd, I just love riding a motorcycle that keeps a smile on my dial every time I ride it. Glad you enjoy the Road Glide mate. I do reckon that your T-shirt collection will get bigger over time. Stay healthy brother.

I admit I prefer my Road King when hitting the tight curves because my heavy CVO will slide out wider than I want (grinding the foot boards!) if I get too enthusiastic going into a corner. For long hauls over a wide variety of road types the Ultra rocks! I agree with the overall assessment. And the sound when on the throttle is much throatier than any track bike could ever be. 👍🏼👍🏼

Then I rode a custom 78 SuperGlide. I then embarked on building a 1950 EL Panhead. Rode it for 5 years. Put it up. Then I went to a 2008 Night Train. A 2004 Big Dog Husky. As an American 65 years old lifetime rider my preference is and always will the Japanese classic standard (Suzuki GS or Kawasaki Z or Yamaha Midnight Special, you get the idea) or the raw performance of a sport bike. I borrowed my brothers Harley Heritage Classic and it just did not float my boat at all. I can’t put my finger on it completely; but the weight and lack of agility killed it for me. And then there’s the overall price and ungodly price for maintenance on a Harley. I will say most my riding is urban fun and not coast to coast touring. However I’ve done a 1300 mile trip on a Kawasaki Z with ease and comfort.

I love John's videos and the fact that he is open-minded when it comes to the range of bikes on the market. But still.... The problem with HD is that for many years they deliberately marketed their bikes to insecure macho knobs, they pushed for an import tariff on foreign bikes which was set at 45% - showing that they prefered suppressing the competion rather than improving their products, and their post-war driven success comes largely down to their use in the service and not so much their superiority over other makes (hence the tax). I fully support the freedom for anyone to choose the product they like the best, but I do think it's worth saying that for many people it's the company philosophy and self-imposed brand image that drives them away from Harleys. The only reason for the recent changes is desperation. I like all types of motorcycle, and I always feel that the reasons for people like myself avoiding HD get oversimplified to "different people have different tastes" when really, I love Victory and Indian and Boss Hoss and the Rocket III, just don't feel right right about supporting HD. Bikers in general still sometimes have to struggle with the tainted reputation by that "bad boy" branding and the kind of riders Harley pulled into our community, and I think that's a valid reason not to like them.
@johnharris73534 жыл бұрын
G yeah those criminal connotations, the 1% 're, Bell's Angels, Mongols, Son's of Anarchy, all that.
@ChuckChrome4 жыл бұрын
A lot of words to get nearly every fact wrong. The import tariff was in response to Japanese companies dumping their product below fair market cost. Dumping isn't about suppressing competition, it is about eliminating it. Also, while HD may have asked for government assistance the US Treasury had already determined years earlier that the Japanese were dumping motorcycles among other products at below fair market value. Around the same time of the tariff HD had a change in ownership and introduced the Evolution motor which addressed a number of issues of the previous Shovelhead so your comment about "suppressing competition rather than improving their products" doesn't hold any water either. I'm not a fan of most marketing, HD included, but their actual customer base is fairly diverse by race, gender and income. Had you gotten out of the house more instead of basing your opinions on some dumb television show you may have figured this one out on your own. Do the math. How many loser dirtbags are dropping 45K on loaded out baggers? Harley has plenty of issues.Try sticking to the ones that are factual.

Were like that because in 1966 Honda introduced the "you meet the nicest people on a honda" ad campaign and sewed the seeds of the brand wars forever. When people who bought a honda started treating harleys like they were scum, the mentality of divided bikers became the standard.

Well said, and well shown. HD marketing really needs to take on this kind of attitude.

Grab yourself a Russell Daylong seat with a back rest and it will get even better. I have 6 bikes, RGS, HD Low Rider S, KTM SDGT, Yam MT10, VMAX, Husq 701. I love them all but there is no bike in the world as comfortable as the RGS.....I have owned them all from the BMW LT's to Goldwings etc. Plus the RGS can be pushed hard in corners!!

Love my 2020 Roadglide, just sick of scrapping the floorboards any corner I try to lean a good bit.

Raging Ninja, look into Legend Suspension. You can get the cartridges for the front forks, and the 13 and 1/2 inch rear shocks. Gives a little more clearance.

Cool video. I haven't seen more convincing content in favor of buying a Harley in my life. HD needs to pay you.

Great review of a great bike. If you’ve never ridden one reserve judgement until you have. 👍🏻
