YB season here starts in Sept - Nov . When do you start to clip YB’s 9/10 flights . After that do you use a light system to help birds molt faster . And be ready to train …

If racing season is in September, i would clip now and pull, the young ones born early will begin to molt soon.

I actually use extended lights for the full body under plumage molt prior to trimming. So my birds light time is normal from now until season. I have them on 1 hour extra simply because I work later. I make sure my ybs feathers tail and tips are done by Memorial Day (today) .. some wait until the 4th of July to pull. Too late for my opinion but to each their own. I’ve been beat by every system. Natural is most common and I’ve had natural molting birds woop mines butts plenty of times.. other times we see the benefits.

6th-10th flight usually keeps them from flying off, but if they catch wind they can still use their secondary flight feathers and take off.

Can the pigeons still be flown daily after cliping 9 and 10 because only half of my first round are up and we start racing in mid Sept. Also I have them on lights so when is a good time to shut them down in relation to cliping flights. Thanks
@xiongguysloft9560
@xiongguysloft9560 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can still fly them daily. I’ve flown daily back then, and sometimes I had to trim the 9-10th flight on some of the pigeons if they’re 9-10th was too long. But it is best to cut them while they are still settling. I cut and pull, then let them out, especially on older birds. So they can settle and not be too strong on the wing.
@xiongguysloft9560

As to shutting the birds in, it’s up to you. Inside my loft is dark, but the aviary has full sunlight. And it almost didn’t matter as most my birds molted early spring and some molt in mid summer.
@Rocky.Ridge.Pigeons
@Rocky.Ridge.Pigeons 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it, last year the ones I didn’t put on the dark system were mostly molting towards the end of the race season and they didn’t do well. In fact they were three or four that I couldn’t send to the final race. Funny how people do things so differently and have good luck with their system. I know some people that are very successful and they do nothing at all. But I don’t think that would be my luck. Thanks for the info

The 9th and 10th flights should be cut lower ( like to 1”above the to wing ) this allow air to dry out those feathers less pain and no fret marks.

You can cut way more than two flights with your late bred babies to ensure they have a full wing of grown out flights by the time you must start loft training if neccesary. A good time to cut the flights is approx 10 weeks before you plan to start excercising. I would suggest cutting the flights you intend cutting much lower than you have done. Just above the small secondary cover feathers is about right to allow the cut flights to dry out sooner. Then pull one flight on each side every week till you have pulled them all. Birds can and will still excercise really well if you cut only two flights but then only 2 inches down but the cut flights will then take a bit longer to dry out sufficiantly to be able to loosen in the sheaths and to then be pulled without problems. All shrewd pigeon fanciers that race young birds will follow this practise.!😅

I have tipplers time flying. and I cut all the feathers on both wings and tail. In mid April and in May first. I pluck them since they get dry. So they have fully grown fully moulted feathers on June 15th maximum. I only do this with adult pigeons. So I can enjoy the whole summer. I know it's a different breed of birds but just thought of sharing it. Is there any racing fanciers that do practice the same thing.?
@xiongguysloft9560

No, idk anyone who cuts and plucks all feathers out. It’s not good for racing Pigeons as the ones that need to race need their wings to exercise as much as they can daily and weekly

I usually clip them right when all the flights have grown in completely or after I have loft flown them for a month or two. They will grow right back with in a month, and during that month, you gotta let them rest and take it easy. And then you want to make sure you have plenty of time to loft fly them again and train before racing days arrive.

@xiongguysloft9560
@xiongguysloft9560 Жыл бұрын
@@jovaniemoralde9624 let them loft fly for a week, and then cut just 1 or 2 inches off the top. That way they can still fly, In two weeks those feathers will be dried to the bone, and just pull them out. Let them out if you want, but they are vulnerable to hawks during this time, they won’t be as strong. So just let them relax until there feathers have grown back almost fully and start loft flying again.

Birds feathers are hollow and dry inside once they stop growing. Cutting an old feather is like cutting your hair, it doesn't change the attachment of the feather to the body. Just a perpetual antidotal thing people do.
@xiongguysloft9560
@xiongguysloft9560 2 жыл бұрын
If you pull them feathers out now without cutting and letting the feathers dry out, you’ll see blood at the tips, and the new feathers growing out will have a chance of growing out deformed. If you cut and let them dry out they’ll usually just fall right off and the new feathers would grow in straight and naturally.

@@Metrzan nope, I’ve raised and ate pigeons since I was 8 yrs old. Started out with feral pigeons and such. Yeah I used to pull the feathers and they still grew out nicely. But cutting them and letting them dry off at this early age makes them fall off so much easier.
