You know it's serious when a single crash made an entire country to *ban* motorsport locally for like 70 years
@RayzzFRR5 ай бұрын
they didn't ban anything💀
@Tsukinia5 ай бұрын
@@RayzzFRR That led to an immediate temporary ban on motorsports in France, Spain, Switzerland, West Germany, and other nations, until racetracks could be brought to a higher safety standard. ;)

Yet Honda still made a magnesium F1 car, 20 odd years later. With predictable and tragic results..........

Jo Schlesser, poor guy…what a horrifying way to die. The fact that Honda still had the audacity to try and get another driver to drive that death trap after his death is appalling.

My dad was at this race, a guest of Hawthorne's parents. He said it was Mike's fault, but I guess this was based on just what he saw, and perhaps also that he didn't particularly like him anyway (confirmation bias). He only ever told the story once - the day before I was going to watch my first motorsport event. He was in the pit lane when it happened and (my recollection of) his recollection was very similar to this account: Hawthorne braking causing the car behind to swerve around him and then a third car launching up the back of it and an explosion sending the wheels and suspension flying into the crowd. He was violently sick after seeing many people killed and decapitated.

This is strange and no one probably hasn't noticed what I'm talking about but please take notice @ 2:04 those people at the left corner of the photo showed up @ 2:04 and a second before that @ 2:03 they weren't there and in the still frame and when they appear two of them have no head but you can clearly see their white V-neck t-shirts AND! and right above them someone is wearing a pair of shades. Here's something else that's eerie this is actual video footage and those or just still screenshots but this same phenomenal also takes place in the actual video footage.

That limo was tore up my goodness. 😧 And the fact that it took out everyone that was in it pretty much. All because of poor maintenance leading to brake failure.

New subscriber here!!! Love your videos btw! I'm a petrohead myself. I wanted to add that Mike Hawthorne would die in a crash a few years later. Some say it was an accident or he might have been racing. (This was on the A3 Guildford bypass)

Take a look at the distance between MH and PL and the widths of the track. Not saying that MH did not contribute to the crash however, LM's change in direction is radical. Had he reacted in a more controlled way there was room for PL to go past him safely. The result is that there were two mistakes that day. The problems occur when you have poor track design and poor track management. Couple this with faster cars and drivers who really should be in a different event and you have a brew for disaster. It's easy to pin blame on a single person. It's a lot harder to acknowledge that a particular set of circumstances might be responsible. Also it should be remembered that Hawthorn wasn't out for a Sunday drive, he and the top drivers of the day were professionals and were out there to win. Watch motorsport long enough and you will see dozens of potential disasters involving three or more cars and pro drivers extracting themselves without incident.

The engine didn't fly through the air The engine rolled over and over along the ground through the crowd you can see this in the raw film footage captured from the accident ...

In my opinion there is no body at fault for this crash. It was just an unfortunate place of wrong place at the wrong time. No driver would have escaped with that difference in speed.
@blagssss Жыл бұрын
I completely agree. It's sad that Pierre's legacy was tarnished for a while by many blaming him for the tragedy. Given the circumstances, that could have been anyone, and it's good that the public no longer hold him to account for the crash.
