Mad F.....s..I love it. I am 71..and can remember my son at 15..we lived on a tough Lancashire estate back then. Anyway..my some and pals..used to get ? These scooter things and strip them down to the bone..then tare around the estate, followed by a speeding police car. It was a game to the kids. My son drove me and his mum nuts..thing is, he turned out great, a wife and kids and a successful small business.and a real gent. Proudest of him..kids eh..Mind, growing up in a large, poor family in the 50's, 11 kids (No telly) 😉 we lads were little better..mischief written all over us. 😀

I’m quite naive with regards to horses... Are they trained to race like that..? Only asking as the horse racing style I have seen before, the horses run differently..? As in these horses are trotting left-right-left-right as opposed to full on front-rear-front-rear. Probably sound thick to those in the know but I’m interested to know 🙂👍

Some horse breeds do more than gallop, walk, and trot. They can also pace or amble. For example, there are a LOT of breeds in the Americas that do this because they were once highly sought after among the elite in Europe, Spain and Portugal in particular. Keep in mind that the foundation stock in horses for the Americas would have had a heavy influence from Spain, the British Isles, and in the case of Canada, France. Spain's horses were small but very sure footed and many were brought to be the mounts of conquistadors and military men. (The Thoroughbred also made the trip by the end of the 1600s) Gaited horses all but disappeared in Europe but hung on in the New World. Just to name a few, the Standardbred, the Paso Fino, the Tennessee Walking Horse, the Missouri Foxtrotter, some strains of Criollo, and the Missouri Foxtrotter. All carry some genetics that code for 2-3 gaits extra they do instinctively from a young age. Harness racers usually go at a pace slower than a gallop and alternate the front and back legs on side A with side B when running. Others have great endurance and a more comfortable seat than horses that don't carry the genetics. As for this stock, I have no idea how they are doing what they are doing. If it is a Gypsy cob, it should not know how. It might be a breed of French Trotter or a cross with that, but how they got their hands on that is puzzling.

@@eamonnnoonan1945 Actually they are a terrible choice for this task. The TB is fast, but it does not carry the genes that adds 2-3 gaits to a horse's repertoire. They are nervous as f*ck: a gnat farting on the wall of their stall is scary to them. Most of them can't even run in a straight line since so many are raised and trained for the track; it starte soooo young. They literally do not know any better. Last of all, but not least, they are slowly being ruined as a breed. The inbreeding coefficiency is too high. That means they are getting more and more inbred and unsound. Most of them have legs like toothpicks and hooves too small to hold their weight; it is not a wonder they die so often of laminitis and break their legs in horrific ways. They have the upper body of Thor, but the legs and knees of Olive Oyl. Many simply cannot handle jumping anymore and certainly not if they are bred for the track. And with some races, there are just too many entrants. This multiplies the injuries. (I won't even get into the ones who are clearly a few bananas short of a fruit salad: look up the name "Storm Cat." Nuttier than squirrel poo and very little like his grandfather, Secretariat.) The studbook has to reopen and allow at least a very tiny amount of new blood in. It has been shut for over 200 years. Weirdly, one of the best choices is the Standardbred: this is a related breed. The Standie has a much bigger butt and more powerful hindlegs. They are a lot calmer as well and pretty much have the attitude of "so long as I get the occasional apple covered in soft caramels as a treat, and neck scritches, I will do whatever you want, boss..oh, look, a gnat!!" The Standardbred IS a harness horse and has a lower inbreeding coefficient. And it ain't half bad as a jumper. That, and if they used the Standie, they could fix the leg problems of the Thoroughbred, maybe even donate some of its ability to gait. It would even make it easier for the horse to retire from racing since the Standardbreds aren't as nervous or neurotic. (An intermediate rider would be fine. TB requires more experience.)
