growing up as a small kid in salford, to an irish father, i fell in love with horse racing as a result of the battles these hurdlers and other great horses of the era had (all with Peter O'S commentary in the background - which enhanced the experience no end). my father's passion was a measure of how much money he had on the irish horses but it didn't take away from the spectacle and beauty of the people and the sport. this video brought it all flooding back. fair play!

Like you Kevin brought up in Salford (Hr Broughton) to Irish parents/uncles who were always very partisan to the Irish runners! These horses and others like Man Alive and Spanish Steps got me hooked, so it's fabulous to see some of these videos from the 70s/80s

@@paulodonoghue3666 : I had a mate in Hr Broughton called Paul "Podge" O'Donoghue - that's not you by any chance is it? We went to St. Thomas' and St. Andrews together.

@@kevinconway4266 Hi Kevin - I was wondering if it was you but I couldn't remember you following the horses (although it must be near to 40 years since you returned with family back to Ireland as a young teenager). What a fabulous surprise - we had some great times in those early years - even though there wasn't much money about you couldn't wish for anything better with some great memories to boot. Hope life's been good to you? Hope you and your brother (John?) are no longer killing each other :) Still keep in touch with Martin Nugent, Tommy Mellett, Timmy Breen and Simon McGarry.

@@paulodonoghue3666 Holy sh*t Paul - it is you! Crazy to think after all these years we end up connecting via KZbin and champion hurdlers! I left Salford in 1981, then left Ireland for USA in 1991 and been in Boston for last 28 years. Life has been good to me here (not withstanding CV-19 and the clown we have for a president). Always cherish fond memories of Salford and the great mates I left behind. My brother John is living in Dublin, doing well. Please give my best to Martin, Tommy, Timmy and Simon - glad to hear you're still in touch with them. Take care pal....so good to hear from you, K

Sea Pigeons owner was a good racing friend of mine, I bet on the Pigeon every time it ran and I showed a good profit, great training feat by the Easterby family.Night Nurse she to was a super star, What great fun Pat Maldoon had with Sea Pigeon, as did the Easterbys they all loved him as did the Great British Racing Public. R.I.P both horse and owner dream on Pat thanks for the memories Pal. Eddie Ramsay

Sea Pigeon was truly one of the greats. The defeats of his jumping career can mainly be sttributed to unsuitable going. In his early days he seemed better on fast ground, but as he got older he couldn't act on it, and was only comfortable on soft or heavy. People were slow to realise this, and possibly connections also ran him on ground too fast at times.

My claim to fame is Frank Levy gave me the leg up to have a sit on Sea Pigeon when he was with Gordon Richards then later thanks to Steven Muldoon I was extremely lucky to get the chance to ride Sea Pieon for a short walk round the streets of Norton when he was housed with Pat Rohan. Then a horse I owned was recovering from injury was housed next door to Sea Pigeon when he had just retired and was stabled with Polly Teirney at Sherrif Hutton.....ah! those were the days :0)
