The jockey raced the horse on the inside for most of the race and only took it to the outside once coming off the final bend and into the home straight, which he probably did when looking for the better ground. That was hysterical once you figure it out. The horse thought the race was over. He didn't bolt but slowed to a crawl and went to what he thought was the exit, which is to the horses left. I say this because the horse stopped himself at the fence, and when he saw the other horse he took off. Ironically, if the race had been another 1/8 he would've passed him again. The horse wasn't hurt, just young. It isn't only jockeys who mistime a race. They may have to use blinders. The jockey said he kept looking at the crowd.

Starving Marvin pulled-up lame at Wincanton in November 2016 and was put down a couple of weeks later and Bad Boy du Pouldu was fatally injured at Plumpton in November 2020. What's The Scoop won what looked to have been his last ever race in 2020 but he came back after 18 months off the track in August 2021 and finished last and then finished last about 8 months later at 150/1 and died the next day at the age of 12.

It’s not that the horses are exhausted. They run a bit slower to conserve energy. These jumps races can be long. You see it better when there are more than three horses in a race, there’s always a quickening after that last jump. Horses won’t run if they don’t want to. Look at a Breeders Cup race with a mare named Life At Ten. She didn’t want to run that race and she didn’t. She pretty much trotted around the track.

I've seen a horse win by five lengths and be disqualified because some lead weights fell out of the saddle bags and the jockey couldn't make correct weight (yeah, I backed that one!). It just goes to show that you never know what is going to happen! I wonder how many punters threw away their tickets on Starving Marvin with a furlong to go?

I once saw a race with the jockey holding the horse with a tight rein while leading throughout the race and at no time release the hold on the horse though the horse jumped the last fence in front the horse ran second with a tight hold still

I thought he'd spooked at the 2 people at the side. They moved back quickly too as if they thought they might have caused it

The rider impedes the head movement needed to lunge for speed. The horse seems to be annoyed by the low head position, which hinders him in the backward lungeing movement. If you look at it at low speed, you can see that the rider's head is drifting further and further down, while the rest is pushing forward.

I know almost nothing about horse racing. Can anyone explain in layman's terms why the horse did that?

Horses chase and race each other for fun, it's how we bend their instinct to our fun. By nature, they mostly like their horse pals and familiar territory. They are also prey animals, so running fast and being scared is their common reality. This big, 17 hands is huge, immature, only three years-old, got over the last fence and suddenly saw a scary crowd in front, no one else to chase, and home (stables) back the other way. In the UK they call it napping. He put on the brakes and threw his shoulders up and to the side. It's really challenging to change their channel once they've got some backwards energy built up.
