We noticed we were stopped for questioning while a LOT of white Europeans were easily able to enter the country without question. We were so surprised thinking discrimination only existed in AMERICA smh.

Exactly. I travel ALL over the world, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Latin America, so I know how I'm supposed to be treated. If I call out a particular country, something is very wrong there.

Damn...I love how you call Mauritius out. My sister was recently talking about going there (with the family even) and I told her about what you said and she changed her mind immediately. Thanks for looking out for black travelers and hitting these racist countries where it could hurt (even if they don't really depend on our tourist dollars anyway, we still should never go to their sh*tty countries). Keep speaking the truth to these structures man. I'll have to look more into Reunion. How are the prices compared to other countries that you like in Africa?

Réunion isn't super expensive like Seychelles nearby. You can get good, fresh, filling, healthy local meals for under $10 usd. The creole fusion food is very tasty Of course, with hotels or resorts, the price range can vary a lot, but for $70 a night, you can find something comfortable, especially if you look in advance.

Thanks for creating this video, we were planning a trip to Mauritius but we have changed our destination. I spoke to another black couple who went there for Christmas and they said the airport officers were so racist and some locals as well.

Im British Mauritian. And yes. My Island could be paradise but there are a lot of negatives. I can't defend it anymore. The animals cruelty for me is why I'm not interested in going back to live and will relocate to an other part of Africa.

I'm black American and I've been to Mauritius three times. You are spot on about the arrival. You will see every white person on your flight pass you by as you answer many questions and produce even more documents before they grant you entry into the country. But once that's over, the people there are as friendly as you could ever want. And the beauty of the island incredible. In my humble opinion it is worth the initial hassle.

If the civil rights generation was as spineless as this, blacks would still be sitting in the back of the bus in America. I agree with arine. Airport staff/customs people most everywhere are generally assholes, and I've learned from experience that more often then not, their attitude doesn't reflect that of the general population. But, I also agree with Jay about not endorsing a place where you were treated like a lesser instead of as an equal. Though he said himself in the video it wasn't all bad, so I'm a little bit confused. I've been to the kinds of places he talks about, and the one thing that will make or break a place for me is its people, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the sites and scenery were still impressive and worth seeing. But I wouldn't necessarily recommend those places to others, and I would avoid similar places for that very reason. I wanted to see those places and I did. What happened won't unhappened. But in the future, I will definitely avoid places where I might potentially have the same experience of being treated as a lesser, instead of as an equal. While there are some amazing places I'd love to visit, for me, it's simply not worth the stress of being treated like a lesser or a sucker. I'd rather spend my money and energy on places where I will be respected and treated as an equal. So what Jay says isn't entirely irrational.

The Afro-Reunionese population is of multiple origins, mainly from Madagascar and the East coast of Africa: Mozambique, Tanzania, Somalia. One part comes from South Africa, and another part comes from West Africa.

Im a Chagossian descendent & yes our people are treated as 2nd class in Mauritius, Chagossian are mostly a mix of Malay & East Africans.

I love reunion! Unfortunately, many black Americans over look countries because they are French speaking, and they don’t want to deal with the language barrier. I felt Reunion was better suited for me than Mauritius just off of research. Look up Kaf Malbar he’s a popular reggae singer in reunion. They have a reggae , zouk and Kompa scene there.

Reunion was uninhabited when it was annexed by France. People have moved there from everywhere. It was among the first places where slavery was abolished and in their case they voted for it themselves. Most of the whites on the island aren't ex-slaveowners, but there are a few of them left, mostly around the village of Cilaos. So, they live in the mountain valley because once the slaves revolted the freed slaves took control of the government and represented themselves to the French Republic. So, the former slaveowners feared for their lives and ran to the hills, but no one came after them because you know, we're all equals now. Napoleon reinstated slavery, but people there went like nah, whatever and continued doing their thing until today. In Mauritius things are different because the darker your skin as a local, the higher the chance is that you're from a family of former indentured servants, the British post-slavery scheme to import cheap labor. As an African national you're seen as a lifestyle immigrant, so people think you're broke and have little to offer plus you're likely to import crime they think. This is a claim-counterclaim issue because on Mauritius it's really difficult to be a criminal and not get caught because small island. Everyone knows each other. As an American, whatever.

I've never been to that part of Afrika but would like to one day visit Reunion on my way back from Java. Hopefully in another 1 year or 2. Nonetheless I would like to say that Black does not mean Afrikan and Mauritius is a part of the Indiën Ocean therefore Australs. And if you recall the word Ninja was a reference to Moors therefore Mór Papuan of Australnesia. They later became known as Blacks meaning mixed of colour or Coloureds and not Afrikan.🥸 They were coastal aboriginies who spoke a form of Marindineesch.

It's not so easy or attractive, my brother. Very few flights there, and they tend to be expensive. I don't know how much research you've done on the place, but a lot of factors make it less than desirable for me.

I'll be honest, reading the title, description and comments I was expecting another one of those "race baiting victimhood" videos, but it wasn't like that all. I think your comments and feelings are completely reasonable. And you even acknowledged that profiling is completely rational in some cases. Although I think your comment not to visit Mauritius is more directed towards black people. I don't see why other races shouldn't visit, but I would personally choose Reunion over Mauritius as well, simply because I'm a Francophile. :p Maybe cities like Paris, Nice and Marseille are different, but from my experiences, research and observations, the French really aren't as bad as people say. Like you said, Reunion is difficult to get to and not a place where very many people go, so they know people who actually make the effort to get there are interested in French culture and the French love that. I read that about St. Martin too, that the Dutch side is rude, but the French side is friendly. I got the same impression in Quebec too. In other Canadian cities customs officials are so rude and treat you like a criminal, and even tourist attractions and average people discriminate against you, but in Quebec they were welcoming as soon as I landed. One guy wrote online that he crossed by land without a passport and they just told him to bring it next time. One Indian vlogger was denied a Schengen Visa by the Swiss because her itinerary wasn't clear. She reapplied to France and they had to deny her because Switzerland denied her, but they told her if she applied to France from the start they would have granted it to her, because they understand that a lot of people travel on the whim and may not have a set itinerary. And I read that French museums don't charge "tourist rates". So people always shit on the French, especially their customer service, but in reality, the French actually treat tourists very well. Also, French don't see color. They don't even ask for race on their census.
