pdpgb *Characteristics of Islamophobia* In 1996, the Runnymede Trust established the Commission on British Muslims and Islamophobia, chaired by Gordon Conway, the vice-chancellor of the University of Sussex. The Commission's report, Islamophobia: A Challenge for Us All, was published in November 1997 by the Home Secretary, Jack Straw. In the Runnymede report, Islamophobia was defined in general as "an outlook or world-view involving an unfounded dread and dislike of Muslims, which results in practices of exclusion and discrimination." In detail, The Runnymede Trust defines Islamophobia as having the following characteristics: Islam is seen as a monolithic bloc, static and unresponsive to change. Islamic culture is seen as separate and "other." It does not have values in common with other cultures, is not affected by them and does not influence them. Islamic ideology is seen as inferior to the West. It is seen as barbaric, irrational, primitive, and sexist. Muslims are seen as violent, aggressive, threatening, supportive of terrorism, and engaged in a Clash of Civilizations. Islam is seen as a political ideology, used for political or military advantage. Criticisms made of the West by Islam are rejected out of hand. Hostility towards Islam is used to justify discriminatory practices towards Muslims and exclusion of Muslims from mainstream society. Anti-Muslim bigotry is seen as natural and normal. The largest project monitoring Islamophobia was undertaken following 9/11 by the EU watchdog, European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC). Their May 2002 report "Summary report on Islamophobia in the EU after 11 September 2001", written by Chris Allen and Jorgen S. Nielsen of the University of Birmingham, was based on 75 reports - 15 from each EU member nation. The report highlighted the regularity with which ordinary Muslims became targets for abusive and sometimes violent retaliatory attacks after 9/11. Despite localized differences within each member nation, the recurrence of attacks on recognizable and visible traits of Islam and Muslims was the report's most significant finding. Incidents consisted of verbal abuse, blaming all Muslims for terrorism, forcibly removing women's hijabs, spitting on Muslims, calling children "Osama", and random assaults. A number of Muslims were hospitalized and in one instance paralyzed. The report also discussed the portrayal of Muslims in the media. Inherent negativity, stereotypical images, fantastical representations, and exaggerated caricatures were all identified. The report concluded that "a greater receptivity towards anti-Muslim and other xenophobic ideas and sentiments has, and may well continue, to become more tolerated." The EUMC has since released a number of publications related to Islamophobia, including The Fight against Antisemitism and Islamophobia: Bringing Communities together (European Round Tables Meetings) (2003) and Muslims in the European Union: Discrimination and Islamophobia (2006). Islamaphobia can also appear in the following forms (not from Runnymede Trust): *Islamophobia as xenophobia or nativism* Muslim immigrants to "Christian countries" in the West are seen as part of a much greater plot by the "Muslim world" to conquer the rest of the world, or at least the West. Muslim immigrants as a whole are seen as unwilling to become part of their host country's culture and society. Opposing such immigration for the above reasons, aka denying people the right to immigrate on account of their political views. Deporting them on account of the above reasons. *Pseudo-historical Islamophobia* Muslims are blamed for the crusades. Fabricating past crimes against humanity that Muslims, in the fabrication, perpetrated against non-Muslims, as in Anders Behring Breivik's manifesto, when he claims that there were attacks Muslim Albanians made on Christian countries. Claiming that it was the Bosniaks who attempted genocide and conquest against the Serbs and Croats (it was the other way around), as Breivik also does. Denying or minimizing the extent of the Srebrenica massacre. Claims that Jefferson despised Muslims during the Barbary Wars or some other Appeal to authority that isn't even true. *Other* Grossly exaggerating the number of Muslims who are terrorists or who hate the West. Opposing religious freedom for Muslims. Actual attacks of violence against people for being Muslims or looking like they might be Muslims. Endorsing ethnic profiling of Muslims on grounds that they're easily prone to radicalization and/or violence.

Many of them honestly do not think they are racist. To many people, believing the negative stereotypes isn't racist, it's the norm. They are stuck with an antiquated idea of what racism is. If they aren't a KKK member or a neo-nazi, if they've never killed a minority, if they have a black friend then they can't be racist.
@Dlo20188 жыл бұрын
you'll be surprised how many white people want to openly be racist and do racist things, but they dont want to be flagged as a racist socially. these people have the most asinine perspective on this. one lady for example wanted to be able to call black people "a spade" and not be labeled racist. yes there are literally white people that think like this, but yet...trumpers and trolls of trumpers want to blame the minorities for some reason.

@erauprcwa8 жыл бұрын
Oddly it does the exact opposite... Forcing diversity and inclusion into your platform to soften a candidates racist/sexist/etc streak only works against them. It may be a dog whistle to their supporters to use as "See, (insert name) can't be a racist/sexist/etc because they have a picture with (insert group)" but to those particular groups, it shows us that were expendable and only used as a photo opportunity to advance their agenda... Kind of like Donald Trump Jr. taking that pic with the Hispanic group that wore shirts saying they were against Trump, in Spanish.

Immigration explained by Michael Lind: "To protect the working class from wage-lowering immigrant competition, the New Deal Democrats abolished the Bracero program (a Mexican guest-worker program). The Hesburgh and Jordan commissions, appointed by President Carter and President Clinton, respectively, reflected this older pro-labor emphasis by calling for reductions in low-wage immigration. Today’s orthodox Democratic position favors not only an amnesty for undocumented immigrants already here, but also more legal immigration and fewer penalties for “illegal” immigration. This was, and still is, the position of Republican business elites, who want to use immigration policy to create a buyer’s market in labor."

i live in the greater cincinnati area, and i have noticed that locals of the tri-state area often omit "to be" when speaking. for instance, radio advertisements for repair services say "if your water heater needs fixed" instead of "if your water heater needs to be fixed". i am not condoning the shop owner's statements. rather, i am offering a theoretical explanation as to why he omitted "to be" from his remarks about hillary clinton. according to google, the land area of the united states is 3.979 million square miles. many folks are or have descended from people whose mother tongue is not english. as a result of this our nation is rich in dialects and sub-dialects. denouncing the statements made in anger by the coffee shop owner is okay. however, i believe that the young turks took it down to the same level as the coffee shop owner when the anchor mocked his dialect. this act was an attack on many americans who have made no hurtful statements about anyone or anything. furthermore, please do not speak with prejudice when decrying hate speech. thank you, cheyenne

When it comes to these folks who do and say racist things (and those things are racist) and then claim not to be racist, I think the best thing to do is to operate with the assumption that they really don't think they're racist and to an extent believe their claims. you might be more correct if you call them out on it but you also close a dialogue that could've enlightened a criminally ignorant person.

Here is a crazy idea: If you want to make money in this world and own a small business, "STAY AWAY FROM FACEBOOK" or Twitter! You want money or you want strangers to know you exist?

Did you hear about the black guy who went into a business and started telling the white business owner he was moving?Because, he didn't feel welcomed in the community.And had even been called racist names several times.He noticed the owner's necklace and mentioned how it reminded him of his military days and he had been looking for that symbol but couldn't find it.The business owner took off the necklace and gave it to the man.The man was shocked and shook his hand and hugged him.

4:45 "in the context of a group of black people that you disagreed with," no he's talking about a group of black people that beat a guy up, that's not "disagreement," that's horrible violence

Yep, sounds like Billings! Got tranfered here 2 years ago from Denver. Im in my forties and I hadn't heard the the "n" word used so freely by people until living in this part of the nation. Sad, sad.

It's one thing to make anonymous statements, but it amazes me that, in 2016, people who have a vested interest in expanding their business seem to be completely unaware how social media and the internet work. Didn't this guy think a little before posting these things? Is it that hard to say to yourself, "Gee, if I say this on Facebook I might offend potential customers and lose business."

just because a racist brings something up, doesn't mean you need to bring it up too.

4:15 Like Remember that time Hillary Clinton did the "colored people's time" joke next to a black guy dressed like a house slave and half of us were like "Come on, that's racist, and with her track record on Mass Incarceration and all the crap her campaign puts out about Bernie Sanders she is the last person who should be making jokes like that" And then the rest of you were like "It's not racist Trump is racist just give Hillary a free pass because she's Hillary Trump Trump Trump" because you were moral and intellectual hypocrites about it. Yeah I'm looking at you Cenk & Sam Seder.

When his apology fails he'll blame "the liberals". As if we squeezed his tiny head and made him say those things. These creeps are so predictable.
@erauprcwa8 жыл бұрын
He'll blame "PC culture" because as we all know, those who complain about "PC culture" are typically the most vile people who want an excuse why they can't be racist, homophobic, misogynistic, xenophobic deplorable people.

this is how you know someone (would be coffee shop owner) is not an adult and is an insult to group with children. IRRESPONSIBILITY, not taking credit for their actions. Positive or negative. His apology was hollow, just a marketing demand

It's old, but everything in this clip is spot on (except maybe for the rube accents) and is worth saying over. People sit at their keyboard and think they are rulers of the universe and then find they can't handle it when the real world calls them out.

Its actually terrible how yes there are racist whites everywhere, but there are also racists blacks, along with every race. Except we let it go, why? Because if we didnt wed be the ones being pinned for racism for calling them out of EVERYONE. Racism is terrible, but without cooperation from everyone, its not going anywhere.

Sighssssss.......why is ANYONE shocked when a racist person does racist things and then turn around and deny they are racist? Denial is a huge part of being a racist.
