Not only in the U.S.A., but in Germany, too, people encounter discrimination based on their skin color. What are the lives of Afro-German youngsters and women like? Where do they run into racism, and how can their rights be better protected?
Ana, Besong and Kalsoumy tell us about their everyday lives. Twelve-year-old Besong is at the top of her class, but often, she still feels ignored by her teachers. Kalsoumy will soon be starting at university. She says, when applying for apartments or internships, she can never be quite sure that prejudice wasn't a factor when she's turned down. Ana tells about her everyday experiences with racism, whether glances on the subway or fears of violence when she walks home through the park in the evening. All three are very familiar with the question, "Where do you originally come from?” It seems to question their very identities as Germans. How can real change finally be achieved? A report by Mariel Müller.

After 8 years in Germany I’ve never experienced “active racism” but rather “passive racism”. Finding an apartment, making a career, applying to jobs….Even if you are more qualified than a German and also speak their language, they will always pick you second to Kevin who spent a semester “volunteering” in Bali.

2015 I spent 6 weeks in Berlin alone and I remember visiting my favorite pizza spot one day and there was a family there with a kid, and the kid kept pointing to me and calling me the n-word. ph19 R discrimination and racism in the USA developed over centuries. From our American perspective, Europe admonished The treatment of Blacks in America and sought to eradicated the slave trade to the colonies. American Politicians and law makers for years keep blacks in a bad condition socially and economically because we are the minority. Europe didn’t have the civil rights movement, Jim Crow laws, segregation, lynching and slave plantations. So your system is more liberal and open to immigration and people of Colour. Ours is quite the opposite. Yes every country has its issues Europe’s discrimination is not of the same quality as the USA. I would say centuries behind

I spent a 5 hr layover in munich on the way to vienna and I felt more out of place and isolated than I’ve ever felt all my 30 years living in Australia as an asian. Born and raised in aus with perfect english and I couldn’t help but feel like seemingly everyone was staring at me. it wasn’t just a glance either, it felt as though they either wanted me to know they were staring (glancing away after 2 seconds of eye contact) or were eager to let me know how an animal in a zoo must feel at a persons passing curiosity. The Lufthansa flight attendants were also extremely curt to say the least. A warm welcome to all other caucasian passengers and no greeting whatsoever as I boarded. I can’t be bothered mentioning the service at the food court just ordering a simple pretzel and coffee. Never felt such a cold welcome in any country ever, during a layover no less. First and last visit. God bless, germany.

In public, some say "black is beautiful, " but in private they wish to have straight hair and lighter skin. I dated a black woman who went to Howard University. She said that light skin girls would not accept darker or unattractive girls in certain sororities. I could not believe this. I felt as if I had been given access to a secret society. The names "high yellow or redbone are terms used for lighter people. It seems as though all humans class each other, many on unfair attributes

I am nearing 60. I can understand a small portion of how these young people feel. My parents immigrated to North America after WWII and we were the only German household on the block and more or less the community. There was a lot of suspicion. So much so we were not allowed to speak German at home. We were called an "N" word too: Nazis. We were also called krauts, The shame that Germans felt after WWII we also felt here as we were demonized as a people even though my mom was only a child when WWII started. I was picked on mercilessly at school and I too thought when will this ever stop. I know it is not as bad as what black people experience daily, but I understand the pain and other feelings that arise from it. Then when I went to university I was one of three women in a class of hundreds of men in the Faculty of Science 35 years ago - many of the male students refused to work with the female students until they found out we had very good grades - because we had to work twice as hard for our places. I had found out that I did not get admitted to the Engineering Faculty- they said because of my calculus final grade from high school (only 82%); but then I found out men were admitted with grades much lower than I had to the same Engineering Faculty. Workin in IT again I am the odd one out yet because I am a white woman in a sea of East Indian men - frequently they talk in Hindi or Gujarati to exclude the non-East Indian staff. So no matter what age, or race, racism is still rampant. The thing that I learned in the end is to work hard and to look at these things that it is the other person's problem and not your own. There are many examples of people from different races that experienced this and turned it around, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and many others. I don't think racism will ever be eradicated in my life, but we can chose to celebrate our diversity and learn new perspectives that can help us along the way.

As an asian german I get discriminated too, what more for a black person? I can't imagine what they're going thru on a daily basis. It must be very frustrating and demeaning. For those who says that this not that bad or stop forcing diversity or feeling uncomfortable is not that bad or you're not German if you're not white , try walking a mile in their shoes or much better, just stop traveling. Just stay where you are, where everyone looks the same. The fact that one don't understand other people's suffering says a lot about one's character. Most whites expect to be well treated in other countries while traveling but here z:B in DE some people don't see a problem making people of other race uncomfortable. I say, if you're not racist like most people say here, don't stare. It's rude. If you're curious, better ask. Get to know them. Stop building prejudices inside your head. It's not helping anyone.

I'm a 64 year old white man who grew up in the all white suburbs of Chicago. I started coming here to Jamaica when I was 17. I have studied Jamaican and American history extensively. Racism will always exist until everyone on planet earth has the same skin color and look. Its human nature and can't be changed by political correctness or through legislation. It can only change through evolution. The black people of Germany have a far different experience than the countries where slavery existed. Me being white in Jamaica I experience racism every time I go to town. I just accept it as I know the source of it well, the history is hard to read it will break your heart if you have one. And the black experience in Jamaica is far different than the black experience in America. I'm at the end of my life cycle and very content with that. I feel for the humans of the future my grandchildren its not going to be the same experience I had that's for sure. Locusts, covid 19, racial unrest and crazy people like Mr Trump its not a good world to be in right now. One love everyone.

@Patrick Turner Reading throughout all the various comments, all I could think of was John Lennon's song "Imagine". My parents came to Canada from Germany/Netherlands after WWII and I've battled some sort of *ism all my life (racism, sexism, etc. etc. etc.). One needs to look at the individual and not the race to see that this is where the problem starts and if someone feels threatened essentially it is their life that ends up pretty miserable in the end. Once a person starts treating others as sub-human they also diminish themselves eventually becoming a person no one wants to be around. I very much identify with what you say about how barbaric the world has become. One only has to look through the comments to see how many ugly/vitriolic posts there are to witness the savagery of modern times. I'm relieved I won't have grandchildren because they won't have the same quality of life we had before 1980 and likely with global warming who knows if anyone will survive past 100 years from now. I'm also relieved my parents didn't see what the world has turned into in the last four years, my mom's younger sister and brother in law died in the last year and they didn't have to live through what is happening in the elderly residential care homes. Take care of yourself Patrick... Chin up maybe we will see a change that will come.

Germany experienced a wave of illegal migration starting from 2015 with the so called migration crisis. Many people felt surprised, over whelmed and helpless when they saw a large number of migrants coming into their country many with smaller kids and nobody asked the german citizens if they want open borders and uncontrolled illegal migration. Some so called non - profit or NGO - organizations supported and funded the migration. They mostly live from social benefit money from the german taxpayer. This does not justify any form of racism or inappropiate behaviour, but many germans are upset and feel uncomfortable and are worried about the future . Other countries like England also experienced lots of illegal migration.

@Rafael Almeida While Western European wealth may have been built by slavery and colonialism it doesn't imply that African poverty was built by them as well or that Africa despite being exploited still didn't benefit from them. Mass migration is a result of poverty, incompetence and corruption in Africa which is mainly the fault of the local African people that they just like to falsely blame on colonialism to justify their migration to the West. Also Germany has paid off their debts for their colonial past already.

Racism plays a major role in the separation between each other all over the world. After watching the very first portion of the video, I agree with what she says. I have witnessed character change when someone feels as though they have to act differently depending on who they are surrounded by. Racism interferes with careers, employment, shelter, etc. While conducting an anthropology research, you are able to see the way people interact with others especially when it comes to skin color. In reality people of color have to make their way around and through things that are unfair, all because of racism.

As a German for example grew up in Greece and as a kid i suffered discrimination not only from kids at my school, but also parents themselves were prohibiting their kids to talk to me. I now live in Germany, and things are okay here not as bad as it was in Greece. As a Volga German i am still treated sometimes differently though. People assume i am of Russian decent because of accent sometimes, when i say i am volga german, their eyes change, because i am a Russian Putin supporter to them. A lot of people get frustrated and seek some sort of release, and extremism often provides it, and uses it. It's all in the head though, it only affects you, if you let it. It's just sometimes, you just wish you could make them feel what you're feeling, so they will finally stop, but if you let them get to you, you become like them and even worse. I personally have gone through a great deal of bullying and singling out, that it's just something i am prone to, a lot of people in the world can't deal with it, and exert in Extremism or in suicide. I think it's because, they are so used to compare themselves to the priviliged, that they forgot to love who they are.

Human beings have a natural tendency to feel more comfortable around those whom are like themselves because that's familiar, and familiar feels safer. Those whom are increasingly different therefore feel unfamiliar which causes increasing levels of discomfort, uncertainty, distrust and even fear. This is an evolved biological response, common to every human being whether they are aware of it or not, that helped humans survive due to the known tending to being safer than the unknown. To a degree you can learn to compensate for this response but considering how fundamental it has been and is, with regards to many other aspects of daily life, it will never be fully negated nor should it be. They feel like they don't fit in because they literally don't fit in. Visually it's as obvious as an elderly individual in a line up with children. This reaction is the result of biological reality, and unfortunately biological realities are not always the way we would like them to be.

I am not Black so I might be completely wrong here. But I am an immigrant living in Germany for 15 years and lived in Eastern, western and southern part. I have completely different experience and is just my own opinion. People should not compare Germany with the problems of America or Australia or Canada (They all are immigrant Countries means majority of the people living in these land are immigrants and having killed their lands own identity). Hence said that it would be almost impossible for an immigrant to identify themselves as Germans or to matter any European countries even though they have been living in Germany (or other European countries) for generations. The question will always rise up and is natural. To continue the other topic most of the people in Germany are just curious and hence some people ask questions and I feel they are really open-minded people. And racist people can be found every where in the world it does not mean that whole country is racist.

As a 1st generation African in France, I agree that people will always ask the question "Where are you from?" to try to find any possible commonalities. I usually get this question from people who have been/lived/travelled to Congo DR, Nigeria, Ghana and Tchad. That said, I PERFECTLY understand why it can quickly become tedious for a 2nd generation youngster who was NOT born in Africa, has NEVER been to Africa or, in case of a bi-racial kid, might have NEVER lived with their African parent. Yes, it is tiring to be asked a question you have no real answer to. When you are German by culture, residence and nationality, you don't know any other culture, what else is there to say? I could easily blame this frustration kids feel on the parents who fail to transmit the African culture to their children, but that would be extremely reductive and inappropriate of me. >__

Also Germans are not very good at socializing, but really, they do not have the responsibility to socialize with us or you. I am also sick of people ask me “ where are you come from?” but then I tell myself some of them are not racist, they just try to be friendly and start a conversation. But then there are others try to tell you things like “ your people back in the old days get called xxx”, that raises the alarm straight away. I felt racism more in HongKong than anywhere else in the world even we share the same skin colour, people treat me rudely everywhere even at the airport when they hear me talking in Mandarin, once I start talking in English, the attitudes changes straight away. What a strange world we live in today!? Wait for alien invasion on earth then we know we all human.

As a relatively dark skinned person also living in Germany, I never have a problem with the question „Where do you come from“ it opens a conversation, it shows that people show interest, I never approach it negatively. When white people go to country’s where only Asians or black people live, they get asked similar questions. It’s not racism, it’s the urge to know something about someone. I do Identify my self as German, my father was German, I speak the language fluently, when people ask questions like that, I always answer that while I was born in Germany, my Mother and Grandparents came from this and that place. Im sorry to say this, but only a person with extremely low self regard and a ton of negative complexes would react negatively to such a question/see it as racism.

There is a difference between where do you come from, and where are your parents from. I live in the states. Many people are 2nd or third generation. However, unless they speak with and accent, I have no reason to believe they are immigrants. I am also Mexican. There it is a different situation, as I look out of place. So I understand when people ask where I am from before they hear me speak Spanish, or in some cases even after. Germany has a higher immigration rate, so it’s different

It is almost impossible to have a day without racism here. You go to shopping market, there is racism, you call a taxi, there is racism, you order a food, there is racism. At this point I just really believe that it is in the gene pool of Germans. They just can’t handle other nations in their country. Only Germans who are tolerant, are the educated ones who have come to their senses. Others are plain ignorant, rude and pure racists.

I think now that surely the best thing for black people to do is to move to their ancestral countries where the majority of the people are black. Then they won't suffer racism. Western countries are predominently white. African countries are predominently black. Nobody can expect people not to see their colour. That is normal. I am white but have suffered racism bcse of my accent. I never feel accepted. I say to black people, move while you are young and can start a new and happier life because racism can never be "cured".
