Note that this isn't the only way to displace a population. If pushed to the extreme and all Norwegians were to interbreed, then the native Norwegian population would be replaced. Some theorize that this is what has happened to our brethren the Neanderthal, which may explain why some Europeans and some Asians have Neanderthal DNA. If that was too much for you, then here is a more succinct answer: no, you are not displacing your own kind because the number of offspring you (and your ilk) are able to produce is not significant.

I'm south african and literally every single time I go out, I get told that I'm beautiful. The first month I felt uncomfortable with people staring at me all the time because I was told that I'm going to experience so much racism in Russia but then I realized that's not true and now I'm used to it and I love being complimented every day.

Russian was one of the BEST experiences for me. Not only am I a Black woman but, I'm 186 cm so the stares are ALWAYS there hahahaha. I have had so many babushkas come up to me and give me food and little gifts. I get a lot of people who want to take pictures with me and stand next to me. I experience this in America as well, as I am a native born American, however, it is usually height related versus race related. I can't wait to go back to Moscow and take pictures of the art. That's my main reason for travel, I love seeing beautiful creativity from other cultures. I learned to say several polite things in Russian so that I express to my hosts that I appreciate their hospitality and that I have a genuine respect for their lands and people. I do that in every country that I visit. Russian men have been incredibly affectionate towards me and very protective, even strangers who are only meeting me in public for the first time. I can appreciate curiosity as I am a curious person. Visiting a place, learning the language and learning the history can dispel so many myths that the media would like to place in your minds. If you have not visited Russia, or any country for that matter, don't be a debil and act like Lord or Lady of the Manor because of your passport...it's unconscionable to be rude in someone else's country.

Well I was in Russia during the World Cup last summer and had the most amazing time, alright I'm a white, blond and blue-eyed Swede, but I did not hear any stories from African, Latin American or Asian fans that they had been treated badly or experienced any racism either. Not saying that nothing bad happened o anyone, I mean there were A LOT of people there during the World Cup, but I didn't hear about a single thing and if it had been a problem, Western media would have been all over it because they always look for any chance to discredit Russia. There are a lot of stereotypes and prejudice against Russia and Russians in the West including Sweden but there were so many other Swedish fans and fans of other nations who I heard saying how much better it was than they thought it would, how friendly and hospitable people were, etc. I had Russian friends and was really interested in Russia also before going so I did not have the same negative view of Russia as many other had before coming, but I was still even so pleasantly surprised! I definitely want to come back to Russia many times and explore different parts of the country, it's huge and very diverse in culture, people, nature, all. With all this said I'm definitely not saying that no racism and similar things exist in Russia- of course they do; unfortunately it exists in any country. But the prejudice that Russia should be an extremely racist country is just so wrong. And it has hundreds of different ethnicities within the country already. Not without problems everywhere, Chechnya and such has had huge problems in the past, but most regions except from there seem to have been peaceful throughout history and still are. I was in Kazan, in Tatarstan, they have a mosque and a church standing almost next to each other, a huge mix between Muslims and Christians and different ethnicities and they co-exist peacefully. When it comes to the US, never been there, it's also a huge country with all sorts of people, definitely not judging all Americans and I met really nice Americans travelling, but there are problems there with segregated communities and racism and inequality between for example white and black neighbourhoods, at least that's my image and understanding of it, though I'm sure it's also different depending on what part of the US you are in. What I can say though is that racism and the bad sort of nationalism is on the rise here in Europe including in Sweden, which makes me ashamed and sad. I don't feel it is in Russia. Although, once again, of course it exists, just like anywhere.

The thing is, Russians really like tourists. We can spend a shitload of time explaining something to a tourist (even if we dont know English) or even more, like take them to the dinner somewhere. We're not used to foreigners, tourists, etc, so people love to explore new culture, new people. The same applies to black people, historically Russia doesn't have black people, so the fact that people stare at them is explained by the simple thing - many Russians haven't seen a black person in their life. And they're excited and interested in him/her.

I am black and i live in St Petersburg (Russia). I have experienced racism once in the metro when a woman clearly showed to everyone that she did not want to sit next to me because I am black. But when she did that, another lady who was seated across me told me not to mind that lady. She left her sit and came to sit next to me. So I felt undisturbed, but the whole day I was still shocked from the act of the other lady.

As a person who lives in both countries at the same time Russia and the US I can say that foreigners often think Russians are racist because of two things. First one is a general curiosity of Russians towards black people. There are not many of them living in Russia and outside Moscow and Saint-Petersburg a lot of people havent seen even one in real life. So yes they sometimes stare but only because they are really interested. The second thing is a general directness of Russians. It might seem strange for a Westerner but Russians usually much freely express their minds cause such thing as PC culture is not present in their country. They are not afraid to tell someone of different race if they are somehow dissatisfied with his behavior or even act in response and will be very suprised if someone accuse them of racism because of that.

This is so interesting because I met someone from Russia and I never felt he was looking at me as a black person just a human being. Children are not born with hate in their hearts. It is a taught evil by people who are filled with hate. I was born in 1951 when hate for blacks was very high. A convertible car with 4 white teens tried to run me down. I was 5 years old in 1956. Their car just missed hitting me . I made it across the street with one shoe left on my feet. I sat on the side of the curb hearing them stand up calling me names. I knew nothing about what they were calling me. I was only a little 5 year old kid. This is so sad their are still white adults passing hate to their kids to continue this evil. Never had anything like this in Russia. In 1956 we had socialism and everyone was equal with about 150 ethnicities living in Soviet Union. And even Russian empire didn't have slaves, maybe because orthodox christianity wouldn't allow it, or maybe because word slave come from word slav (russian ethnic group) since the times tataro mongols invaded and was enslaving slavic/mostly rus people for 300 years, anyway rus Emperor Peter 1st the Great was against slavery, he requested one black man in captivity of ottoman empire to be given to russia, can't remember why. Anyway he made him free, sent to collage, made him general and a noble. Then this black man's grand grand son become one of the best or the best poets and writers in Russia - Alexander Pushkin. I guess its not natural for us to hate black people. Its nazis, not black people, called soviets sub humans and killed 27 millions of soviet people. I don't understand how people can hate someone just because of skin colour.

Because of the huge numbers of slavic slaves there. They was also the cheapest because of revolts and mostly boughts by Ottomans to serve on galley ships. Khazars was nowhere around at the time, already lost to just about everyone (Rus, Pechenegs etc.) and move out from region long ago. How come they was the biggest problem :D And the zionizm that never did anything to us.

I’m an Asian American who’s been living in Moscow for 8 months, and I got the same comments when I told people I was going to Russia. But the truth America is a much more dangerous place, and the racism is much worse. In America, I felt that 75-80% of my interactions were influenced in someway by race. Coming here, it’s like this huge cloud that always hovered over me in the US has mostly gone away.

In Russia people really look AT one another with interest. In America they look THROUGH you as if they don't really see you. They try not to make eye to eye contact. I've been living in America for almost 20 years now and got used to it. But at first I lacked that kind of positive attention I got in Russia from strangers as a person, from men as a rather good looking woman. You, on the contrary, are fed up with negative attitude in America and get all the advantages of living in Russia with your real and unusual beauty and charming smile. It really warms my heart to hear things like this. I am a Russian living abroad most of my life. Certainly there are instances of racism in Russia. And what might be interpreted as racism in the West but really is just the initial shock of seeing someone completely different, and once that is over with, you can have a conversation not based on skin colour but on personalities. It's not an insult to be called black in Russia, it's more of a statement of fact. The fact that Russia intrinsically has 190+ ethnic groups with all kinds of physical appearances and cultural differences surely has made the mindset of people less inclined to judge someone by looks alone.

I agree with everything the Victoria says.. I live in Kaliningrad .. have been for a year and will continue to live here. For quiet a while.. I am a curly haired girl from India.. and totally get what you mean by the appreciative glares of people around.. and Russian women! I am in awe.. they are hardworking ,sweet ,polite ,helpful.. in all my interactions not once have I experienced that they look down on me, or they don’t help me, or they don’t complement me , or they don’t encourage me! The people here are so warm so patient .. I have lived in London for a year and half and being in Russia was such a welcome change .. I can say what is the situation in Russia with racism. I am living in Kazakhstan , so we have everything the same :D There are not black people that we can see everyday . Everyone is white . Russians are not racists . They just have never seen black people in their life . So, it is quite exotic and interesting for them . And moreover it doesn’t depends on that your black skin, you can be white too. If Russians hear smth in English, they will stare at you because you are foreigner . Btw Russians are very open, polite ,friendly people . :)

I received a lot of hugs in Russia & exceptional hospitality because I was a visitor & everyone seemed so excited to meet me. There were a few young people that had curious conversations about culture & history. A couple of people in stores wanted to practice their English, but most places I went the people didn't speak English. German seemed more common as a 2nd language. A few words in Russian went a long way. People everywhere were friendly. In the cities & in the neighborhoods & markets.

As a white person growing up in predominantly white people area the one thing I catch myself doing when watching blacks is stare at their eyes.. And it's kinda weird but also not that unusual, it's the eye-skin contrast that literally makes it impossible to look at them without focusing on their eyes.. I guess it could work with a white shirt or something then the neck area or sleeves whatever might get focused upon, but a black person wearing dark clothes and only the eyes popping out white ? - ends up in a direct eye stare lol Might create some embarassing moments (especially in culture where you're not supposed to talk to "strangers"), but just wanna say - might be something you might experience, but then again I guess the fact they feel free to come approach and start talking might ease out on that (somewhat) :)

There are many nationalists in Russia, not only conservative old people, it's a trend among teenagers. And even people who are not particularly nationalistic still use slurs and think of immigrants as less than themselves. They don't want their children playing with tajik's children at the playground for example.

I was in Thailand and i got treated better than back home in the U.S.. I got a private tour of a museum without any extra charge. A Thai woman saw me and was smiling so much. I've never thought that there is any kind of such "class" mentality in the USA because I've always watched those tolerant American movies and imagined the USA as an ideal country where everybody thinks about everybody as absolutely equal to each other not depending on either race or level of income. Otherwise, I've always thought that there is some level of racism in Russia against Asians (I am Kalmyk, I live in Moscow for 10 years). After your video, I've realized that I exaggerate, overthink and overreact to some harmless jokes. I've never been treated as a lesser person than my Russian boyfriend in any Moscow restaurant or cafe for my entire life. Thank you for your video, it's very useful to know that mentality differences between countries. The most comfortable I've ever felt was when I lived and studied overseas in Europe. I never experienced racism during my time there. Unfortunately, once I returned to the states the dark shadow of racism was there to welcome me home. Enjoy your time in Russia and don't take your experiences for granted. My bro-in-law is Kazakh and my sister used to live with him in Moscow. Kazakhs sorta look like Mongolians or Koreans. My bro-in-law would ride the subway sometimes and one day was approached by Russian skinheads who were talking smack about him in Russian. People from Kazakhstan are fluent in Russian so he knew exactly what they were saying about him. After they surrounded him he stood up and said firmly in Russian, "I understand Russian, if you touch me I WILL KILL YOU." The ignorant skinheads glanced at one another and backed down! I think in Russia there is more racism towards non-slavic peoples of former Soviet countries than foreigners.

Skinheads appeared in Russia after the collapse of the USSR, in the 90s they went without hiding, they were all about football gangs. I think it is quite possible that they were sponsored by people like Soros. This was aimed at the collapse of Russia, at the separation of the national republics from Russia. Soviet people have always been internationalists, for me, as for those born in the Soviet Union, it is wild to divide people by skin color and nationality. We all people.

We went to Russua and had a wonderful time. I am a woman of colour my husband is a white man. People were very polite and helpful. I also think that maybe people thought I had a suntan and perhaps I had just come back from a holiday and perhaps I was rich. In America, well.. I was yelled at by a black woman and called a black bitch in SF and other nasty things happened. No one was willing to help with directions. Etc etc. We will never go back to the states. This was enlightening in many ways, and I applaud you and Victoria for always bringing these issues out! It's an interesting matter of perspective -- in the USA culturally we are still taught that we're the "single greatest beacon of freedom and democracy" and other media sources definitely paint Russia with the broad "they're against democracy/they're evil" brush (and I definitely have issues with statements Russian government officials have made towards the US) -- but then the same thing happens in the Russian media in some way in regards to the US -- but then it's interesting that there's not the sense of putting us into classes based on difference in Russia that there is in some regions (sadly still) in the US. Most importantly, thought, at the end of the day, people are just people and if they're genuine, they just want to learn about others who are different from them and APPRECIATE them for that difference, rather than cast them to the side because of it.

I love this and can totally relate. When my Italian husband and I were dating I purposely did not tell him about much about these racialized dynamics or rudeness/shabby treatment because I wanted him to see it for himself. And boy was he shocked pretty much from day 1 (although this was over 10 years ago in a liberal state, but things have improved). One of the first examples was when we were out to a fancy dinner with my parents, and the wait staff totally ignored the elder at the table (my Dad) to addresses my then boyfriend whose English comprehension at the time wasn't that great. So awkward. We've walked out of restaurants (before seating or ordering) due to being ignored; and he's told people off on occasion. And let's just say the problem is always with one gender of one demographic that seems to have a stick up their butts, lol.

I'm a South African Indian and I've been living in New Zealand for 22 years....and..seriously, every Russian I've met, is so Down.With.Brown lol This is from my personal experience with Russian people. So when I say down with brown, what I mean is, Russians seems to have more of an interest and curiosity about me looking Indian but actually being South African. OMG you two are gorgeous inside and out! I'm multi-ethnic from Canada and have travelled lots of the World but was always afraid of Russia due to my ignorance, so thanks for this vid. Canada is very different from the US in this respect and it always tough for me to cross that border. Hearing you talk about being American and it is in your own country where you feel discriminated against made reminded me of my brilliant sister. Like me, my half-sister is also multi-ethnic but she grew up with our dad in Jamaica--which is also very diverse and like Canada is not segregated like the US (it's just too small to be). She went to uni in NYC and the city bent over backwards to convince her to stay, pay for her post-grad etc... Most people's dream, right. She turned them all down and went back to start her career in Jamaica. I actually watched my beautiful mixed sister go from no experience of racism (how it SHOULD be) to LEARN how to be discriminated AGAINST over 4 years. Broke my heart every time I visited. And this was in NYC--supposedly the most open of the open of the US. The big, rich country could learn A LOT form the small poor one. Come to Toronto, Canada--OF COURSE you'd bee treated the same! And lots and lots of couples here look like you.

That explains it. Toronto is not the rest of Canada. Canada is very much like the states it is just not as extreme. If you go to these smaller towns with majority white populations, you will get a lot of racism. You can take that from bitter experience.

I also lived overseas as Canadian attending internationals schools--with a lot of Americans-- and have travelled to 40 countries. Never experienced in Canada what happens in the US. @@kf9346 Well peachy keen my bad for assuming, that said I have experienced many of the things that happen in the U.S. I have had many violent and racist encounters and so did most of my homeboys and homegirls. Maybe you have been lucky or unlucky depending how you look at it. That said, I have been to many towns in Canada and your experience is not typical of anyone I have met. It is also not borne out by the stats. That does not mean it is not real for you, but I am saying is, telling black people that Canada does not have the racism that the U.S has could get them killed! Keep your head on a swivel peachy keen and don't get caught slipping. Example one of my homeboys' sisters is a sitting MP and because she does anti-racist work, she is getting explicitly racist death and rape threats from these Mzungus. Hell, even Peter Pol livres wife was getting racist rape and death threats and she ain't ever black she's Asian.

If you talk about racism against black american then it's true, but in Russia you can easily find racism between Russians and Caucasian against each other. It's not about nation, it's about multiracial countries. In every society there are racists, but it's about every single person and his education and manners

Russians don't have any experience with black people, so we don't have negative stereotypes about them. Still there are A LOT of russians who think that all immigrants (from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan etc) are uncultured, dirty criminals. There are many nationalists in Russia, not only conservative old people, it's a trend among teenagers. And even people who are not particularly nationalistic still use slurs and think of immigrants as less than themselves. They don't want their children playing with tajik's children at the playground for example. We associate black people with America, because of that we treat them as something from Hollywood movies. But russians are not nice to immigrants from poor countries. I believe russians think of them like Trump's supporters think of people from Latin America - 'they are lazy and uncultured, they bring crime to our country'. Even though they are hardworking people, who do all the dirty work just to feed their families. Yeah, and there are some neo nazis here as well, bored and angry young men, who would beat up a black person the same way they would beat up a Tajik, just cause they are full of hate. And russian government and society in general don't really work on eliminating hate crimes.

meow pasha - I assume you are Russian and are a part of Russian society, so why don’t you start campaigning against hate crimes, nationalism, and racism? It starts with one person; change for an improved society can start with one person and then it can grow (and in the past it has grown). Create a movement, speak out against racism and racial slurs you come across online and in real life, engage with racist Russians and explain to them why you think their beliefs are wrong and harmful try to make them question their racist beliefs and hopefully abandon their racist beliefs, criticise negative hateful attitudes amongst your people, include, welcome, and be friendly to the Tajik, central asian, kavkaz, Siberian/East Asian, Caucasus people, Ukrainians, and other foreigners, in your school, work place, society. Don’t just stand back and let racism go unchallenged in Russia, canalising against, fight it, challenge it.

Very interesting video. I’ve always been interested in Russian culture and language but as an African American woman living solo abroad in Japan for many years, although I have visited many, many countries in Asia, I haven’t visited Russia yet because of the very high profile racial attacks against Africans and Asians studying in Russia in the news circa 2006. Granted, I have not heard much about such incidents in a while, and I definitely would say that I have found kind people in all the far corners of the world that I have visited where rather than racism ala the American variety, you instead encounter curiosity. I’ll have to reconsider visiting Russia in the near future.

The same happened with me in Argentina, they looked at me with curiosity once there do not have so much black people in the street. I'm from Brazil, today I live in north of France, my husband is white and he did not met any black person until 13 years old, he said me was delighted the first time he saw a black girl. Lol. I do not experienced racism in France also, we have 3 wonderful mixed kids and our families are so good together. but Brazil unfortunately is like USA. So much segregation of class and color.

Then you have the north where the slaves where brought To build the cities, result 80% of black people. Then you have all rest of Brazil a mixed of black, White, indian, asiatic and unfortunatelly the racism Is present and very strong, not only with color, but with social status. So sad

I think your videos are great and informative! I once worked as a cashier in a truck stop and seen Russian men walk in. They are always on their phones talking, never once say hello, or acknowledge me. Now I understand, thanks to Fedor, that Russian’s do what is needed and move on. I thinks it’s interesting to learn Russian demeanor and I must say, I wish those mannerisms and characteristics were common in the States.

I saw on the internet. Black Americans felt equal in other countries. That did not have a class system. And are thriving and for once feel free. I am brown married to a European. In some countries I am looked down on and in others I am equal. Those countries I love and I am at my happiest. And others look look up to me and I ensure that we are equal. Having experienced racism my whole life in my birth country. I know exactly what you mean. I have take up learning Russian this year. And I will continue. I look forward to visiting Russia one day. Josephine Baker, James Baldwin and many other Black celebrities left America for precisely this reason. Black soldiers fighting during WWII were particularly angered by how well they were treated abroad in comparison to how poorly they were treated upon their return to the U.S. This led to the Double-V campaign - Victory Abroad, Victory at Home!!!
