Greek is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages, while Persian belongs to the Western Iranian branch. Greek has a written record of over 3,000 years, easily making it the oldest documented Indo-European language. The Greek alphabet, originating from the Phoenician script, was the basis of numerous other scripts, such as Latin, Cyrillic, Coptic, Gothic, and Armenian. The Greek language has virtually impacted other languages in every corner of the world, being an important component of Western civilization, the Christian religion, and the language of some of the fundamental texts of science, astronomy, and mathematics. The Greek language today holds official status in Greece and Cyprus, and is recognized as a minority language in Albania, Armenia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Ukraine.
The Persian language (Farsi) is also an ancient language which has had a huge amount of impact on other languages and cultures, mainly the Middle East, as well as Central and South Asia. Classified as one of the Western Iranian languages, Persian holds official status is Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. Persian has strongly influenced many different languages, including numerous Turkic languages, as well as well as Armenian, Georgian, and many languages in the Indian subcontinent. Persian has a long history of literature and it was notable for being the first language in the Muslim world to break through Arabic's monopoly on writing. The Persian language has also influenced the Arabic language, although the impact of Arabic on Persian has been higher. But the influence of Persian in the Muslim world has been strong since the early days of Islam. It was even established as a court tradition instead of Arabic under many ruling Muslim dynasties.
Greeks and Persians have had a long history of contact, dating back to the antiquity when the Persian Empire had control over the modern-day Greece, which they would eventually lose during the Greco-Persian wars. The Persians and Greeks would become enemies and later establish a positive relation since Alexander the Great admired Persian culture and aimed to create a mixture of Greek and Persian culture.

Parysatis is the third word in Xenophon's work "Cyrus' expedition", when he begins with the phrase: "of Darius and Parysatis came two sons : Artaxerxis and Cyrus." the anc. Greeks were obsessed with the Persians in the classical Era, just as they were obsessed with the Egyptians during the archaic Era. Speaks volumes as to how much admiration and fear they had of them.

When I spoke of fear, I meant that they were cautious about them, after all the Persians invaded Greece with the task of conquering it. Greek authors say that many Greek individuals immigrated to Babylon, to make a fortune working as warriors or strategists for the great King. Xenophon had to escape Persia after Cyrus' death. But the Greeks feared the Persians and that is why they raised multiple revolts against them in Asia minor, that is why they studied them closely, and finally why Alexander III (the great) of Macedon campaigned successfully against the great King.

An interesting experience of mine on this matter. When the movie 300 came out and all reactions of Iranians after, I checked IMDb (international movie database) website where there was arguments by many 300 fans saying why Iranians should act like this and it's just a movie, etc. What amazed me to see how great people the Greeks are was that I realized most replies to those complaints were written by some Greeks to support our Iran/Persia history rather than Iranians themselves! So, I agree. Greeks are very nice and knowledgeable, to say the least.

+Massi We Greeks have deep respect for the Iranian nation which hails from the depths of history just like us. We have also our historical texts even from those times of huge confrontations (Greek-Persian Wars of 5th-4th century BC as well as Roman-Sassanid Wars of 6th-7th century AD) and our ancestors even if writing about "the Persian enemy" they still held Persians in great respect as a civilized nation. Persians too, we know, had expressed similar opinions, e.g. Cyprus the Younger was an admirer of Greek culture and the first Parthian high king actually added the title "Philhellene" to his full signature name. Beyond history, we often meet up with Iranians anywhere in the world and we keep getting the same experience : civilized, ultra-cultured people with deep education and a way of being not far away from ours.

The Greek gentleman was so charming! Love to Greece, from an Aristotelian Iranian (student of philosophy)! :) And btw, chourmás (χουρμάς), keftés (κεφτές), flitzáni (φλιτζάνι), toursí (τουρσί), ... are all originally Persian words (ترشی - فنجان/پنگان - کوفته - خرما) also present in Turkish.

@@skatiarhs007 The ultimate root could be Persian but if you borrowed it through the interaction with the Turks, it's considered a loanword from Turkish. We have a similar situation. Not all Greek words in Turkish came directly from Greeks. There are some we borrowed from Persians who earlierly borrowed from Greeks. Or we borrowed some words from English, which they borrowed from French. But we still consider it a "loanword from English".

@@aysegulkara1752 I just know that turks borrowed the MOST WORDS from anyone. I say this because I could not believe how many foreign words were in your language! I believe it’s because your people invaded civilized city dwelling nations & didn’t have words for a lot of the stuff that they had. Same reason why you had no SEA words, since your people had never really seen a huge open body of water or lived by one. 👍

First Greek is from 18 century isn't ancient! Hellas is city country like Athens Sparta and more like that. Macedonian is ancient country! No city state big difference and in 1913 year Macedonia was separate in four pieces, the 1 biggest part get Greece, 2 then Serbia , 3 Bulgaria and 4 little Albania. In 1944 after the World War Serbia is back as one part who is now Macedonia. Greece did the biggest genocide to Macedonian people 2 000 000 was killed , assimilated and vanish. And they don't like us they want to disappear from earth. Just look at the moment in video : Greece army marching in Thessaloniki. And you will understand.
