Dan Hennessey was definitely a big part of my childhood growing up. Before "Care Bears," his Braveheart Lion voice would be used for Uncle Gundy from "Star Wars : Droids." Rest in Peace, Dan. May your legacy live on in the characters you voiced. 🙏

I’ve been watching all of your Berenstain Bears comparison videos lately and after watching this latest comparison, I’m kind of glad I never watched this particular episode as a kid, even though I read the original book, along with most of the other Berenstain Bears books (I read a lot of those growing up). I had no idea Nelvana changed so much from the book, but then again, I really didn’t like how their adaptations of Get The Gimmies and The Bad Dream turned out either. Regarding the 2002 series, even though I watched numerous episodes as a kid in the 2000s when it aired on PBS Kids Sprout, along with a handful of episodes of the 1985 series on VHS, I kind of like the 1980s series better. The 2002 Nelvana series isn’t that bad, since I thought their adaptations of Too Much Junk Food, The Green-Eyed Monster, Trouble With Pets and Moving Day were great and even improved on the original books in some parts, but as much as I get the producers were trying to make a grounded, down-to-earth type of show, I feel it’s a little bit too down-to-earth and watered down compared to some of Nelvana’s other shows. At least with the 1980s series, which I think is more in the spirit of the original books since Stan and Jan were more involved with that series, their episodes of the books they adapted were not only faithful, but also expanded and even improved on the source material as well. Plus, I liked that the 1980s was more cartoony and expanded on the Berenstain Bears universe. All in all, I still like the 2002 series as much as I do with the 1985 series, but sometimes I wonder what would’ve happened if the 2002 series had been produced by a different studio instead of Nelvana that allowed Stan and Jan Berenstain to be more involved beyond Executive Producers. I’m pretty sure they would’ve done more faithful adaptations of their books.

I grew up watching Dan Hennessey's works, mainly the Nelvana Care Bears and Little Bear. I still remember the Peanut Butter Balls song that Brave Heart Lion sang in one episode I had on VHS.

The Berenstain Bears book that provides the ''Fantastic Racism'' image on TV tropes!. 4:17 Also that means he voiced Two Nelvana animated bears

The showrunners only changed the plot as part of their plan to make the show down-to-earth. The same method could apply with other episodes of the 2002 show such as “Get the Gimmies”. Speaking of the Berenstain Bears, according to the U.S. Copyright Office, it looks like the 1985 series didn’t end in March 1987, it ended in December 1986. And “In the Dark/Ring the Bell” is actually part of Season 1 and not Season 2, thus making “Go Fly a Kite/The Trojan Pumpkin” the first episode of the show overall and “The Messy Room/The Terrible Termite” the first episode of season 2 (which is obvious with the latter having a 1986 copyright date)
@ZakWolfАй бұрын
Yeah, and that would also explain why "The Merry Room/The Terrible Termite"'s end credit sequence had the BBC thunderclap in the Southern Star logo played at regular speed, being the first season. Regarding changing the plot, Stan and Jan Berenstain also intended the First Time Books to be down-to-earth, to better explain common childhood situations. But the showrunners of the 2002 Nelvana series also intended to make it more relaxed and toned-down, compared to in the books and the 1985 Southern Star series where characters could raise their voices and even lose their tempers.

The 1985 series is a lot wackier compared to the 2002 series, since it uses synths and orchestral music compared to the 2002’s bluegrass style music.

At last! What a cop-out that episode of the series was. Too chicken to address the subject of racism? I have a feeling that if the episode were made today, they would've adapted the original story more closely, focusing on the Pandas' culture as kids shows now adays really push that kind of agenda. They wouldn't have to make Papa look completely racist or mean, just emphasize on how he's unsure of them because they're different. They end up all becoming friends so the ends justifies the means.

If the episode were to be made now, they 100% would follow the original book. Especially since the beginning of the decade where Asian hate has been skyrocketing.

While it was kind of hokey (no offense meant to Hokey Wolf, who is one of my favorite Hanna-Barbera characters) for Nelvana to get rid of the anti-racism message, I will give them credit in showing that discrimination isn't always based on different physical characteristics. This does make me wonder, though, if black bears are the equivalent of African Americans in this universe (I know that brown bears used to inhabit North Africa in historic times, but still). I also remember Sesame Street tackling anti-racism before the 2000s in an animated short where two boys are playing cowboys and Indians only for a real Native American boy to show up and point out how stereotypical they're being. RIP Dan Hennessey (sincerely); and RIP Papa's mailbox (humorously).

This book has a very powerful message that everyone needs to hear & know. We should never judge anybody because of their race. Or if somebody’s part of the LGBTQ+ community. Or if someone’s a furry. God made us all equal. No one person is better than another. We should treat each other with kindness, dignity, & respect. Let us all spread love, peace, & inclusion around the world.✌️☮️🌎😇🥰❤️🤟🏻🤟🏼🤟🏽🤟🏾🤟🏿🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

@ZakWolfАй бұрын
Yeah; Stan Berenstain died in 2005, and Jan Berenstain died in 2012. Now their son Mike Berenstain writes and illustrates the books, though Mike began helping them on the books in the early 1990s, initially uncredited. I think Mike Berenstain may have even illustrated "New Neighbors!"
