As a new school year starts, many students are excited to get back to all the familiar comforts of in-person learning: crisp new folders, greasy cafeteria food, and of course, racist and sexist dress code policies.

There should be zero rules about kid's hair. As long as it is clean and pulled back during labs, woodshop, or athletics; then anything should be fine.

The clean rule is difficult… Don’t get me wrong, kid’s hair should be clean, but when it isn’t, it is normally because of something outside the kid’s control: they are homeless, there is no water at their house, etc. Sometimes there are easy solutions, (high school gyms have showers,) but sometimes it is more complicated. The absolute worst thing that can happen is that the kid decides to skip school or is sent home from school, all because they couldn’t get a shower that morning…

@petertrebilco9430
@petertrebilco9430 3 жыл бұрын
Fair comment. Might I add: if a school objects to what a girl wears, 1) is it the school’s standard she doesn’t meet, or is it society’s? 2) if it’s society’s, what makes the school the arbiter of the standard, and how does it ‘know’ what the ‘acceptable’ standard is? 3) the authority to limit another’s freedom without her consent must come from the People, not the institution that serves the People. 4) the institution (school) is a state instrument, and not the People’s instrument. 5) the state serves the People…so, no matter which way you slice the cake, the school is not the arbiter of the People’s choices. 6) if education is not supposed to be about breeding obedient, conformist units of labour, then what on earth does a person’s clothing have to do with learning? 7) if education is about inculcating values and self-discipline, has any member of civil society ever been asked to consent to a particular standard? The role of schooling in education has been grossly abused by authoritarian idealists whose dominant view of a local socioculture has no bearing on the learning-teaching relationship. Exercising one’s (assumed) authority to limit an individual’s freedom to exercise her unlimited and unlimitable rights is the antithesis of freedom to grow as an individual, the very ideal of society…which suggests that schools are the antithesis of the socioculture they serve. Teachers simply don’t get it. Drop outs and failures are a consequence of incongruent assumptions about how and why the learning-teaching relationship matters, and to whom. States use state superstructures, state infrastructure, state employees, a state curriculum, and state standard testing to produce compliant citizens. Where in any of that description is reference to student-centricity? Student-centric, learner-centric rhetoric is an add-on to allay the fears of parents who are compelled by law to send their children to schooling. If schooling were voluntary, schools would have to be far more responsive to the interests and values of the civil societies they serve. I wonder if that’s why schooling has become compulsory…because it relieves the school of the challenge of being relevant?

@@MissingYouser ummm…. I’m pretty sure you missed most of the video. Maybe watch again? It’s definitely not about equality. It’s about control and body shaming. Children aren’t meant to be treated as if their creativity and self expression are bad things. They aren’t meant to be taught to be ashamed of their bodies or race. That kind of invalidation of self and identity will only lead to growing up with mental health struggles that could have easily been avoided if they were raised being respected as unique individuals. One such impact of this type of invalidation is anger and resentment. I kinda feel like there are enough people in the world with that already. It’s very difficult to heal yourself as an adult from things that were being deeply ingrained growing up. But it is possible. And we can do better!! We can model respect as we raise the next generation. We can model inclusiveness. We can tell them that they should never be ashamed about what they look like. And arguably most importantly, we can show them that it is not acceptable to force people of various backgrounds to fit in nice, neat little boxes of how other people think they should look. Edit: tldr These dress codes are not designed for everyone to be treated equally but rather to control cultural identity and young girls/young women. Just because it’s a common practice to have uniforms, doesn’t mean that it’s perfectly fine and we should just keep doing it.

Meanwhile, about 200-300 students on that same day all wore the same "jesus freak" shirt and jeans and were not corralled into a room to be berated about being a gang... The only dress codes I like are the ones that are there for safety reasons. I have had classes where you could not wear synthetic fabrics, contact lenses or croc type shoes because some of the chemicals we were using are VERY dangerous with those items but not dangerous if you just got them on you. If a shop class requires all hair to bound tightly to your head in some way so that it can't fall into machinery that seems very good to me. Same for a chemistry class. Same thing if a class requires no loose clothing for safety reasons. If you are just sitting in a classroom though just make sure the clothes are not distracting and I say that really loosely. Don't wear transparent clothes, clothes with lights etc. If Lada Gaga would wear it at a concern it is not appropriate.

My school dress code bans any shirts that show any bit of torso. The principal had a serious discussion with my home room teacher when I wore tied t shirt that showed an inch of torso. I was told that torso showing was banned for all students, yet I saw “less curvier” girls wear crop tops everyday and one of my male friends wore a short crop top and didn’t get in trouble. I complained about this to my school guidance counselor, she said that she had never heard of students ever not liking dress codes and protesting/arguing them. Both her and the principal are millennial women in a liberal state. Our school’s dress code also has a ban on hoods up and hats, this is not enforced because too many teenage boys wanted to wear their hoods up and obscure parts of their face so the principal just officially allows it now... even though it’s still banned in the district dress code. The worst part of the dress code is that theoretically anything can be banned so long as my principal thinks it’s “sexually promiscuous”, it’s all up to her opinion.... My guidance counselor said that she believes dress codes exist not to keep boys from being distracted but to keep teachers from being “uncomfortable” and to protect the student-teacher relationship

The entirely distressing aspect of over-regulated schooling is that it is engineering social clones, units of labour that fit a preconceived image; not empowering children as individuals to live and work on the premise of doing no harm to another without the other’s consent. Every human being has exactly the same unlimited and unlimitable rights. The struggle is not for rights. It never has been. The struggle is, forever, against the assumption of authority to limit an individual’s freedom to exercise a right. If we all live together, doing no harm without consent, there is no need of any other rule.

When I was in high school in the early 1970's, the administration decided to revise the dress code. They met with a student committee for their input. The result: the entire dress code was:" neat,clean, modest and appropriate" that's it. And it was the student committee that added the word "modest".
@jandrews6254
@jandrews6254 3 жыл бұрын
But then the word “modest” gets to be interpreted by different people according to their particular hangups. For some uncovered hair, short hair on girls, long hair on boys or girls bare shoulders is as far as they go; for others it’s the presence of a female in public, who is then required to dress in a manner that erases her existence as much as possible. The interpretation is the problem

So hijab wearing women can’t be teachers or work in any provincially controlled workplace. Making minority cultural groups invisible to students from those groups teaches them they’re weird, rare and unacceptable. That’s what it’s all about. Yes, teachers also can’t wear crosses or other Christian symbols on their clothes, but such items are easily worn where they can’t be seen while hijabs or kirpans are visible.

Boys dress code says basically wear a shirt, don't wear trainers Girls have a whole list. Including telling twelve year olds that their shoulders will distract male teachers. Not male sixth formers (16-18 year olds- technically we were a girl's school but sixth form was mixed), men old enough to be our _fathers_, and somehow that's alright We're lucky that all they said about hair was natural colour (though they actually forced me to dye my hair blonde after the green temporary dye I used in the summer wouldn't come out)

I taught in a Catholic school ages ago. Of course, we had student uniforms, with some minor variations allowed. I asked one of my students about it and she said that it made her life easier, as there was no decision about what to wear on a given day. "Just throw it on and get on with things." She also said it eliminated the fashion contest factor. I taught chem and physics, so I did warn the girls that the little puffs of hair on their forehead (which were fashionable at the time) could easily ignite. Boys could not have hair below the collar. Billy got written up for this (not by me!). I had hair (I'm male) well below my collar and he, very rightfully, protested. I volunteered to cut my hair in support, but he let me off the hook. So, he got his hair cut - in the back, to apply the letter of the law. But he grew his bangs to nearly past his nose! Go Billy! Oddly... We're having inservice the week before school starts and the principal states a simple rule - earrings cannot be larger than a quarter; if they can be covered by a quarter, they're allowed. Simple enough, right? The vast majority of teachers were women and they spent the better part of an hour discussing exceptions.
