I mean, that seems entirely possible. Being young and in the initial discovery phase of a new hobby or area of study, it's easy for one humiliating incident to ruin it forever. I wish I could think of a specific case, but I remember doing little experiments that upset adults (teachers or neighbors), not understanding what I was doing wrong, having lasting fear and negative emotions associated with DIY science projects, and deciding for a long time just not to do anything that might seem unusual to anyone else. Actually something like that happened to me at work today. I had been working on a side project during my free time, a CNC macro program that tested the functionality of a milling machine. I left it up on notepad on the computer desktop, and my older coworker asked what it was. I started to explain it, and he flipped out and yelled at me telling me to "JUST STOP!". When he calmed down I explained that it was just a learning exercise and that I understood that it will probably not be useful for our productivity. It's important to me to keep learning things and feel like I have some forward movement in my life. He has no interest in programming, and told me I should just get a job programming instead of being a machinist. Well, I am not qualified at the moment to program professionally, and this is my gradual attempt to become competent. If I were any younger or less confident, that interaction would have probably ended my study of this topic for a long time. I did all of the work on this over Thanksgiving, diagramming out the geometry problem and writing the code out in my notebook, and used a whole 5 minutes of time (while the machine was running BTW) typing it out on the computer at work. It was literally fewer than 20 lines of code.

I think it was trayvon martin who conservatives still treat like a criminal who deserved to get executed by Zimmerman. Literally Zimmerman was hailed as a hero and did tours signing freaking skittles for psychotic conservatives who jumped for joy over what happened. It sucks Zimmerman was basically able to walk away with murder and get praised for it. But things did go bad for him after his fame went down. Dude lost his mind and believed he could do anything because he got away with murder. His girlfriend or wife ended up leaving him because he became very abusive and he ended up stalking her and her mom for a bit. He ended up losing his job because again the moron was on a power trip and was causing problems. Then He almost got killed by a a dude he got into it with and he ended up stalking that guy and harassed him for a year. The dude kept calling the cops but for some reason They did not do anything so the guy had enough and bought a gun. He shoot at Zimmerman and while he did not get killed he backed off after that. Not sure what Zimmerman is up to now last I heard he moved to the middle of nowhere might even be off the grid. Who knows but at least he did not get live a comfortable life for long.

It is so difficult for me to think about how someone could feel that frightened by people with different skin colors. Maybe it's because I've been regularly exposed to others, but I struggle to see a world in which I'm naturally opposed to someone through that alone. I literally only struggle to believe this not because I don't want to trust those who say it's true, but because I don't want to internalize that humanity in general is so depraved, so degenerate, as to feel like heroes for hating others from a different social group. This is so sad.

11:30 I grew up in the Midwest. We moved to a small town. From age 10 to 16, I had to walk to school, one full mile in each direction. The SCHOOL SYSTEM forced this, as my mother asked if the bus passing our general area could stop, and they said no. When I was 16 and had my license and car, the school suddenly changed their mind when it was too late.
@catelynh1020 Жыл бұрын
Grew up in the midwest as well. Not sure exactly how far away the school was, but it was a 15 min ride from my house and a few more stops before we got to the school. Driving my own car was 5 mins. But the ride back was over an hour. I was third to last to be picked up and last to be dropped off, so 4pm would roll around and i'd be napping in the bus when the driver would call out to me to wake up and get off. Unfortunately, the walk was also about an hour just into town, nevermind to the school, because we lived in a valley with a hill and interstate between me and the town. No one ever stopped me from walking to town, but i always called my parents to pick me up on their way home because the walk back would be too much for me. Also because i normally went to town to go to the library and carrying 8 thick books as a kid for an hour up a hill and back down didn't sound great.

I was a senior in high school in 1997. George Lucas re-released the Star Wars movies that year, and with them came all the toys and merchandise that dominated the shelves back in the 80s. One of the newer toys were extendable lightsabers that made sounds when you hit the blades against each other. It was dark, not too late, but dark, and me and my best friend were at the park by ourselves. We were pretend-lightsaber fighting. You know, like boys do. Suddenly a cop rolled up and shone his light on us. He yelled out, "Hey, what're you boys doing?" We weren't engaged in any crime, and it was a small town, so we ran up to the cop car and told him, "We're playing lightsabers!" The cop just looked at us like we were the nerds we were, and he nodded and then said, "Okay," and drove off. We were two white boys. It sickens me to think that two black boys doing the same thing could be misconstrued and possibly even shot to death just for having fun. Any kid, no matter the color, should never be afraid of cops. Kids should always be allowed to be kids.
