I had an argument with my dealer recently about this. He was so triggered by footage of events like these and asked me point blank if I thought it was appropriate to bring little kids to drag shows. I looked at him plainly and said, "Honestly? No, I don't. I'm not sure why parents choose to bring their kids to these things, and I personally find it inappropriate. But you know what? I ALSO think it's inappropriate to bring kids to church, or to bring kids hunting, or to bring kids to an R-rated movie. Does that mean I think we should have legal consequences to parents if they do? Fuck no." That's what he and every other conservative will never be able to understand. Actual freedom, actual personal liberty means sometimes minding your own fucking business. It sucks to watch people parent their kids in ways you think are detrimental, even harmful, but unless it reaches a certain threshold for harm (which drag queens and R-rated movies don't) you don't get a say. He of course argued back that drag queens DO meet the threshold, which led me to point out that, statistically speaking, kids are FAR more likely to get m*lested at church than at a drag show. man I didn't realize how lucky I am to have grown up in a city/community where people are accepting instead of hateful. When me and my boyfriend (i'm a dude) went to my high school semiformal (like prom but not just for people in grade 12) I wore a dress and makeup and stuff, and legit nobody cared. The thought that I might have to deal with bigots didn't even cross my mind, I was more worried about people gossiping about me the next day. I went to the state fair last month and as a trans man (pre surgery, post meds) I wore a wonderful red dress and a big brimmed hat to hid my beard:face/hair. A bunch of kids (teenagers) harassed me in the ticket line asking about my genitalia and hitting on me and telling me to shake their hand like a man. Those were the boys. They got the girls to chase me to the bathroom yelling at me about genitalia (teen girls). With this experience and the historically documented actions that teen boys do to teen women or kids, I have to say one thing. Trans and drag folks should be the ones fearing teens not the other way around. But that would mess up the extremist right narrative.
