"In this WALB newsfilm clip probably from 1964, WALB reporter Jim Knight questions white residents from Albany, Georgia, near a grocery store and later in front of Midtown Drugs about their reaction to a proposed civil rights bill. The clip begins with Mrs. J. D. Miles, who expresses her disbelief at the bill and declares to stand up for her rights; she feels that African Americans already possess the same freedoms to work and build their neighborhoods as white people. Next, Knight stops two women and a girl; one of the women expresses her concerns about possible violence and her preference that demonstrations remain peaceful. Another unidentified woman interviewed by Knight hopes there will not be any "trouble," and adds, "of course, being a Southerner, I'm not for it at all." A woman who does not have time to be interviewed interjects that she thinks African Americans already have equal rights. A man and a woman walking together decline to comment when they are stopped, as does an older gentleman, who says "What I have to say wouldn't be fit to go on the air." Another man and woman enter the store with a boy and a girl; they feel the bill should be voted upon as part of a national election, rather than forcing an "unwanted" decision upon the nation to accept. Finally, the last woman interviewed attests that she, too, is against the proposed legislation, and admits her concern about living in a neighborhood with African Americans".

@@mrhawk1924 you know what’s sad, I am gen x and I think these women were the nerdy girls who got picked on, and cried about everything to the teachers in order to get us in trouble. I had a Karen tell my son and his friends at our dock that they could not fish for sharks. The lady who is a tourist even made a sign that said “No Shark Fishing”. When I saw the sign I confronted her and told her to leave the kids alone. They fish there at night and don’t bother anyone. She called me a wetback, called me illegal, told me and my Haitian neighbor that we need to go back to our country the banana boat etc etc. When the cops came I started speaking to them in Spanish and the lady went bananas. She almost got arrested, and I called the owner of the unit she was renting and he threw her out. I love that name Karen.

And today..."Black people need to be grateful. At least you're not getting lynched". Different era, same argument. It's a damn shame actually. A national disgrace.

@@shaunatate Back then was different, people thought different and current situations were different. What you are using here is a logical fallacy called false equivalency. You can equate the dumb people of society as dumb but what you can't do is equate the past problems to the present. While, no they aren't disconnected they are different. What you have today in America is a class issue not a targeted race issue. Because everyone can and a lot of people have been discriminated against for multiple reasons it varies. Which is why you are supposed to take legal action in the case you feel as if you have been discriminated against and been treated unequitably

The problem with segregation is that the principle of “separate but equal” was never actually adhered to. The Supreme Court said that separation isn’t equal but that is a lie. Equality refers to living conditions. If two families, on black and one white, live in the exact same type of house but never interact with each other then they are living in equality despite their separation.

@@Warhead-ds4dc I suppose only in the sense that he's assuming a great deal about people sharing his pet hatreds. "MAGA" is a third of the country. People who prefer "All Lives Matter" are two-thirds of the country (including half of blacks) and "law and order" is consistently a strong issue for swing voters. Similarly, he presumes that no one could possibly empathize with the people interviewed in this news reel. As if it weren't clear sixty years later that their predictions for the outcomes of the CRA on their communities were prescient.
