At the 12:10 mark you talk about the bushing caps or whatever they are called for the mounts. I bought an Edelman part# 2015 rack and pinion and I cannot get them pressed in. I tried hammering them and I tried using an impact gun with the bolt and nut to drive them in. Then, I measured the sleeve with calipers and compared it to the old rack. The holes are much smaller. Has anyone had this problem with the Edelman brand new rack and pinion?

What symptoms were you having that causes you to change this? All of my ball joints, etc seem to be tight but my steering wheel can significant play. I don’t think it is the lower or intermediate shaft. It seems like the moment is in the rack and pinion. Thoughts?
@TheGasTap3 жыл бұрын
The inner tie rods were worn out. Have someone turn the steering wheel while you watch for play in all the joints. (Only turn the steering wheel the about of the “play”. Not full turns )
@jwhammy753 жыл бұрын
@@TheGasTap thanks for your reply. I had a mechanic check for play in all the joints. He said everything is tight. When I rotate the wheels back and forth, the play seems to be where the lower shaft meets the rack. The shaft turns at the rack and the wheel dont move. Im wondering if that is a symptom of a back rack and pinion?
@TheGasTap3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the rack to me. You may need to find a new mechanic if he didn’t spot that.
@verdigo58922 жыл бұрын
The inner tie rod has a ball joint attachment, (ball and socket). They wear out. Most rack and pinion steering units have replaceable Inner joints, but General Motors decided they would rather sell the whole rack and pinion steering gear because , hell why not sell a whole unit for 600 bucks instead of a couple of 30 dollar tie rods when they wear out.

@@TheGasTap Except for the dissimilar metal corrosion between the aluminum rack and the steel truck frame. But you know better than those engineers that designed and tested the truck. 🙈
@TheGasTap2 жыл бұрын
How would it not ground it’s self being that it’s all metal? Housing, gear, tie rods. Seems pretty grounded. Please explain the science here. Thanks for you comment.
@verdigo58922 жыл бұрын
@@TheGasTap Google Galvanic Corrosion of dissimilar metal parts. The bonding, or ground cable provides a path to ground the electricity produced between metal parts made of different materials. Two dissimilar metals when placed together, (especially in a wet salty environment) behave like a battery. Voltage is produced, but so is corrosion at the contact points. It's a common practice. Its why you don't attach aluminum with steel bolts or steel with aluminum pop rivets. But you are right. It's not gonna make a difference in function. Just the next guy that has to remove those rusty bolts.
@TheGasTap2 жыл бұрын
I understand the dissimilar metal issue. I’m not understanding why a ground wire makes a difference when the aluminum is only the body and the rest of the internal parts are steel. Ground wire then also goes to steel. What’s the ground wire doing that the internal steel parts grounding to the steering knuckle then to the control arms aren’t doing?

As you guys probably already know these GMC's are notorious for rusting underneath and the tubings are cheap and problematic, I have replaced all the brake, fuel (and patched) the transmission lines and now the line on the rack and pinion popped, I ordered them through Amazon (because in my area) NO BODY CARRIES THESE LINES waiting for second line to arrive and will be reinstalling new lines on the rack and pinion.
