ALBERT LEE WEEK - Song 3 of 6 - 'Rad Gumbo'.

Albert’s opening song of his 3-song set on this week’s show was ‘Rad Gumbo’.
At some point during my tenure with Albert Lee and Hogan’s Heroes, one of the chaps suggested this Little Feat track for the band. This was also around the time when I had been asked to produce the band’s next studio album which became known as, ‘Like This’.
As soon as I heard Little Feat’s brilliant original version, I instantly imagined a traditional Dixieland Jazz band romping away at the end of what would be our version. Luckily for me, the chaps loved the idea and so it came to be. Messrs Paul Newton (trumpet), Adrian Fry (trombone), Peter Effamy (clarinet) and Richard Pite (sousaphone) did their Dixieland Jazz magic for the studio recording and Paul, Adrian and Peter (with the addition of Adrian Revell on baritone sax) reprise their brilliance for this live performance on BBC Radio 2.
This music is like food for me. This music has the same effect on me that Gospel music has on ‘believers’. I have a deep spiritual connection with this music… with this sound… and it’s very hard for me to put it into words. All I can tell you is that my heart rate increases when I hear and play this music. I love it so much and I was delighted when Albert chose this to play with my band.
And so begins the masterclass in musical vocal phrasing. Albert’s singing matches his guitar genius. The feel, the soul, the total understanding of what he’s doing and the impeccable execution of every decision he makes. It’s things like this that make him a true wonder of the music world. ❤️
