ALBERT LEE WEEK - Song 6 of 6 - 'Country Boy'.
12.55pm, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 28 March 2010.
“I’ve never heard anything like that in my life!” exclaims Sir Terry Wogan at the end of this clip. And quite frankly, he spoke on behalf of so many people who were picking up their jaws off the floor for having just witnessed the genius Albert Lee deliver one of the most scintillating versions of ‘Country Boy’ of his career. Arguably, THE most important and significant version ever.
You see, this was the first time that Albert had been invited onto a live, national BBC radio or TV broadcast in nearly 30 years... and he knew that even with all the ridiculously amazing things that he had achieved in his career as a sideman, this was a big BIG moment for him as a front man. And dear god, did he seize the moment!!!
As you can see and hear, the studio audience went berserk at the end, giving Albert the only spontaneous standing ovation in all of the 36 shows we did that year. The noise was so thunderous, I couldn’t hear that Terry was wrapping up the show and so therefore, I missed my cue to play the closing signature tune of the show! 🤦🏻‍♂️
For me personally, it was a huge emotional experience because having been the conduit that brought Albert to ‘Weekend Wogan’, I felt that I had finally paid back to this icon the incalculable joy, opportunities and exposure that he had given me.
We spoke on the phone later that evening while he was relaxing with a glass of wine and reflecting on what had been an extraordinary morning/afternoon. I will never forget the very lovely things he said to me in that phone call and how content he was with the job he’d done! And rightly so.
To have performed live on BBC Radio 2 with Albert Lee on Sunday, 28 March 2010 will always be one of the greatest honours of my life.
Albert, I love you mate! Thank YOU! ❤️

I had the pleasure of sitting and speaking with Albert Lee for about 20 minutes some years ago after a Q and A session sponsored by Sam Ash Music. Mr Lee was jet lagged from flying from England to Calif then to NY for the session. The jet lagged Albert Lee still had what we see here -albeit not as energetic. What a very kind and humble man!

This track is from the album 'Heads, Hands and Feet', also the name of the band, from 1971. I came across the album then, when I was a student at university in Glasgow, sharing a flat. Lee had formed the band a year or so earlier. However, songs that sounded like American country music didn't generate much enthusiasm here, so Lee moved on. Has played with lots of people, and is hugely respected among musicians.
