Radar Gun - Hacked!

Turn a 'toy' radar gun into the real thing! Works great! Cops don't even have one like this! While this is a completely new and different design, my inspiration for this video is from an article by Ken Delahoussaye in MAKE Magazine.

So changing the housing makes it more accurate or greater range or both? Would taking the front plastic piece off the original housing improve it as well?

Ooooorrrrrrrr.....put a peice of tape on the trigger. And maybe reroute the battery wires to 4 AA's

Excellent tutorial! I'm wondering, though: what was accomplished by mounting the radar to the hotshoe of a video camera? Did you somehow wire in the speed readout to display on the video's input or something?

im a baseball player (pitcher) and im thinkin about making one of these because the real radars are so expensive. do you think it will be accurate enough to measure a mid 80's and up fastball? i just wanted to make sure before i spent the time and money making it

@saranakhbari thats ""modifieing" not hacking from where I come from, to hack refers to the re-configuring or re-programming of a system to function in ways not facilitated by the owner, administrator, or designers to go in and change the outcome of the product so it does something totally different. he modified it to work better, to last longer(battery) and for the switch to not have to be held to keep readings and so on.

@chaddythepimp1973 so it's a pretty gray area of both I would say but it deffinately isn't a total "hack" cause it really didnt change the overall outcome of the original design, it is still used to take radar reading like the original, only now it stays on and, and the batteries last longer.

So the hack is just the switch and more battery life? Des it do anything for the range?

Some of your videos are really hard to follow. Not because people don't understand what's going on, but, for example, in this video, you just say "Four holes were drilled" You probably were referring to the water bottle, but where on the water bottle?

Here on Guam, around the road leading from Dededo straight to Agat, the security gets tight about a little more than halfway there. They set up something like your stuff, but they have no mic on there camera and the radar gun is separate. I guess they watched this video.

That is a good idea for the police department to use! They could set those up around the city and if someone speeds the radar gun will detect it and the camera will catch the licence plate number!

So i made this, been working on it for a couple days now, I have everything put together where they should be,... But when i press the button it still reads speed just as the old gun, i changed the batteries to AA not AAA, and i used 4AA's... so that should atleast triple the power, but it only indicates the numbers '2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and rarely 9" SO WTF IS WRONG!? i dont think the switch has anything to do with power output, so i didnt bother with the toggle switch, i just kept that dumb ol buttn

You can't get these from stores no more they are to old this video is from 2008 but you might be able to get one on eBay or craigslist
