They've also greeted each other on twitter! ~TL Notes~ I put context in the subs for any terms used, but I'll go through them a little more in depth here. Rakugoka - A rakugo performer. The "ka" is sorta like the "-er" "-ist" "-arian" etc. suffixes in English. (Teacher, psychologist, librarian) Shin'uchi - A master rakugoka. They are usually referred to as shishou(master). Once they achieve this rank, they can headline shows and take in apprentices. Yose - A yose is a type of spoken performance theater where the rakugoka sits upon a kouza, raised stage/platform and the audience is seated on the floor around it. (Or these days there can be chairs and the kouza can be a platform on a stage.) Zabuton - Apparently this is a loan word into English, but I don't really know if people know that it's a floor pillow. I figured the picture provided could give context clues just in case.

Yeah, I dunno how true that is though. I didn't learn it until I started studying Japanese. I can see it being used by people in the west that practice a Japanese art, sumo like you said, buddhist meditation, tea ceremony... According to wiki, it also describes a "zaniku" which is a larger cushioned mat that a "zafu" which is a thicker, circular cushion that monks sit upon to meditate. Sometimes borrowed terms become broader or narrower so it's not unheard of, and I don't practice buddhist meditation so I can't really confirm if we actually do this in English. Wiki linked to the passage of the book that said it though and it also described it as a loan word. TIL

Thanks! Props for noticing! I figured since her normal way of speaking is extremely polite, she reads a lot and does use big words sometimes, it made sense to use a wider vocab!

It’s always fun watching this happen - a content creator mentions a name, someone whose work they appreciate/respect/cherish, and that person comes around and interacts with them. The best are the cases where it turns out they were already enjoying their content, of course, but even moments where fans pay a VA for some lines on Fiverr can get that same vibe. Happy for Raden someone she looks up to looks back at her with a smile. It’s certainly a feeling to cherish.

There are fuck tons of Rakugo manga before the "Akane-banashi", and there are also A FUCK tons of good shamisen manga/anime, There are also fuck ton of Go manga/anime (serious one with rules and not cute girls doing cute things), then there are a ton of mahjong manga (the japanese mahjong). and yes, they are/were mainstream. With high sales and long volume release. You are just sooooooo ignorant and not read any of those. The thing is the westerners weeb are just refuse to watch those stuff cuz it is "too culture" for them to understand and be interest in it, rules are complex, no drama, no hot girls.

Yeah, I wonder the same thing. If not before, then it's certainly possible now that she's getting noticed. I wonder how the naming would work, because the kayfabe is that Juufuutei Raden is her stage name, but irl its just her name as a vtuber and normally a rakugoka's name changes as they get promoted

You'd think that, I did at first, but learning more about rakugo, Shunpuutei is actually used by a decent chunk of Rakugoka past and present, with quite a few active rakugoka using the name Shunpuutei. Also, the tei at the end is one of the handful of building kanji that the ends of Rakugoka family names end in. It's still possible that it's not a coincidence, but there wasn't a Japanese reaction or any discussion to the names being similar, so it makes me lean towards coincidence.

As far as I know, she hasn't. She's not technically allowed being just a zenza minarai. She's basically just a stage hand/tea getter right now. Once she achieves zenza she'd be allowed to perform at her master's shows as an opener, but that's all. Once she becomes a futsusame, she'd be clear to perform proper rakugo on stream. I don't know how rigid rakugo is these days as there are college clubs that perform rakugo without going through the literal years of learning required before becoming a futsusame. I feel like Raden's the type to respect the old ways, so who knows. Maybe she could get permission from her master to do short performances or practice on stream or for membership. Like you said, this hasn't been done before (as far as I know) so it's a fually new territory. Sorry this was so long. Lol

Ah I missed this video until now! I hope Raden gets the opportunity to meet/collab with her oshi, but it seems Rakugo is a solo performance act so that doesn't seem likely. I wonder what she meant with the name change? When you study under a Rakugoka, your stage name takes their stage name? And switching teachers is super taboo? So, is Juufuutei her teacher's stage name?

Every time someone learning Rakugo gets promoted, their name changes somewhat. Sometimes it's based on their teacher's name, sometimes not. Depends on the teacher or that "family's" style. Once they reach master level, they can choose their name but they usally ask for input from their teacher and will tend to keep tradition. The taboo bit would be a lowly zenza minarai having the gall to change their name all on their own as they don't even have their foot in the door technically lol. And her current name is the weird bit, because her character lore is that Juufuutei Raden is her stage name, but she's a vtuber and her name is her brand so she can't exactly change it. If the person inside is truly learning rakugo, then her name changes won't be reflected in her vtuber... So I guess in the next 10 or so years, keep an eye out for a young female rakugoka? Lol
