"Put yo hands up!" Watching Raden teach Hajime so carefully was so interesting and fun that I wanted to share it with everyone. I figured that it could be used to teach the basics and I thought it'd be perfect so that people could watch the tournament that Koyori is hosting on April 6th (JST).

Thanks so much for the long clip! I never thought I'd sit through a 30 min long vid on Mahjong, mostly because I never bothered to learn the rules, and the game seemed overwhelmingly complex. Now I know that was only half true (the graphics and sound effects in the game are still overwhelming!) Your translation and additional images helped make the rules clear and engaging. I could really get a sense of Raden's experience as an educator during her methodical, piecemeal explanations, and Hajime was the perfect conduit to learn alongside. Now I'll be able to watch the tournament and cheer for Team D live, so thanks again!

For beginners, I recomment just get the basic 4 -triplets- melds and a pair. As long as you keep that in mind when making your hand, you can ignore everything else.
@Kazu_Tsukiri9 ай бұрын
@@moderndayvampire1469Saying to get a "basic" 4 meld and 1 pair hand is a huge trap. That's how you get people starting out to call out terminal tiles and then wonder why they can't win when they have a hand like 123 234 678 555 99 consisting of different suits. The easiest thing to do when starting out is to not call any tiles an opponent plays, as in keep a closed hand, because that in itself is a yaku. You can look at the opponents hands when they win and see what their yaku were and start to remember those in the future.
@totorikisaragi69019 ай бұрын
If you're playing online the game (any game out there) automatically tells you the total score. If you're playing IRL there's an app called Riichi Calc that allows you to enter everything: the tiles in your hand, the doras, seat wind, winning tile, etc So there's no excuses my dude 👌

First of all, many thanks for this translation. It's a joy to watch and your additional input is actually very welcome. Quick question, before I forget (it may be answered later in the video, I'll see): At 20:25, discarding the second 4, would that invalidate the 3&4 that's left, too, when you'd pull a 2 or 5? Or does discarding it only affect newly drawn tiles, meaning if, for simplicity's sake a dumb example, I had three 4s, discarded one and pulled another 4, it would invalidate the triplet?
@statskytl8 ай бұрын
Furiten only comes into play when you're tenpai(waiting on a winning tile) and only disallows you from calling Ron(winning from opponent discard). You can still win via tsumo(self-drawn winning tile). For the 3.4 example, since she still has a 4, she doesnt have to worry because she'd be waiting on a 2 and 5. However, say she discards the 4, draws a 2 and becomes Tenpai with a double wait of 1 and 4. She can't call Ron on either the 1 or the 4 because she's Furiten. For your specific example, that would invalidate it, but also never happen because there's only 4 tiles each so someone paying attention would come after you lol. Also, fun thing since I'm here, this doesn't happen online because the programming doesn't allow, but IRL when you declare Ron when your hand is Furiten, that's something called a Chombo. This means you've broken the rules and are penalized. Standard at my table for this specific Chombo was Mangan sized(8000 points spread out to the other players) There are also less severe Chombo, like drawing from the wrong place, but trying to win on a Furiten is pretty egregious since the other players might not notice and can be considered cheating if it goes through so it's penalized pretty heavily.
@squivoil8 ай бұрын
@@statskytl I see, so because the 4 wouldn't be the deciding tile, it's fine. Makes sense and is kinda obvious, but yeah..lol. Thank you! Your fun thing makes me think of how I've never thought of the RL Mahjong...so used to seeing anime or Mahjong Soul, that I never thought about how effectively invisible cheating can be in RL. Very enlightening! Absolutely love watching decent Mahjong players, whereas pros would probably go well over my head (plus, watching playing for fun is much more entertaining than competitions).

9:59 if you can only focus on one thing: then focus on defense, discarding tiles that are safe when your defense are solid then you can start improving on speed (tile efficiency) then lastly learn to get high score by learning yaku probabilities

Yeah, generally you won't lose if you don't get ronned. Most of the time, that is. If the other three players keep tsumo-ing you'll have to take risk.

She did leave out that you can still draw the tile yourself(tsumo) even if you're furiten, but you shouldn't count on that of course! In general, it's good to avoid furiten which is probably why she didn't mention it
@moderndayvampire14699 ай бұрын
Easy rule of thumb is everything the opponent discard is safe against them. Because they can't win with it.

So I can still draw and use tiles that I discarded earlier myself to get a winning hand, just that I can no longer chi etc those discarded tiles. Wakarunderstando
@statskytl9 ай бұрын
You can still chi and pon tiles you discarded too! You just can't ron it!
@moderndayvampire14699 ай бұрын
@@shikikatana1737 Even in tenpai, you can call the tile. Just not win with it. For example, if you discard a chun early, and you wait on chun to win (but furiten), if someone discard a chun you can pon it. In this case you have to wait on some other tile to win the hand, but at least you have a yaku.
