Thanks for the Linux centric perspective - I agree we need to somehow make it clear that it is AMD's attitude towards Linux that makes their product the obvious choice, so we encourage them to go further into the future.

Well, if you have had experience with vfio and rx5700, you would be so happy about not having to do a hard reboot of your server because the windows vm locked up or have to schedule driver updates a la enterprise style. It is a headache with one vm. It most be horrifying if you have multiple vms in active use. This is indeed great news (one fewer reason to consider NVidia this gen).

can someone explain what pci reset is?
@Mallchad3 жыл бұрын
If I understand it correctly it clears any settings and states applied to a PCI device and kind of "reboots" it. With graphics passthrough to virtual machines the VM and card will complain because the card already has states that is telling it is has booted as is doing work.
@LightWrathme3 жыл бұрын
@@honestsniping1 I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people than me on this topic but my understanding is: It's important that the graphics card has the ability to reset itself without needing to be power cycled. This is talked about a lot when using VFIO because once the guest virtual machine has the card passed though, it will initialize the card (Load the GPU BIOS). Normally I believe when you have a card that doesn't have a reset problem, the driver is unloaded during machine shutdown and the card automatically resets so it's in a clean state to be used again when the machine is started up. However on some AMD cards the GPU doesn't reset and so it's left in a dirty state which means it cannot be used again until the whole machine it power cycled. This doesn't just affect people using VFIO though, if the driver or card encounter an issue during operation. The card would reset and the driver reloaded but with this issue the OS is left needing a full hard reboot. You may have at some point got an error from windows saying something like "The graphics driver recovered from an error" I believe this reset process is whats happening to allow such a recovery. I don't think the PCI Bus it's self is responsible for the reset of the device but it can trigger a reset by placing the card in a lower power state and then returning to a normal power state.

As a Linux-Windows dual booter and a Linux gamer these would have to really suck for me to not pick them over Geforce. The AMD software model on Linux just fits better with the Linux ecosystem. They have come so far, when I bought my R9 290 in 2014 it really sucked in Linux. I used to write forum posts complaining about slow it is in Linux. Both the open drivers and the proprietary ones sucked, the latter of which most of the time I could not even figure out how to install successfully. Now I play AAA games on Linux with freesync too, I never would have imagined it five years ago on this same piece of hardware.

Should I get the money, I will certainly try my best to acquire one of these or similar AMD cards, along with one of the recent AMD CPUs. The reason being, that I want a really dang good Linux computer for VR and possibly getting into character modeling in Blender. I don't expect the things I want to do on the computer to actually need such amazing performance. Maybe half of it. But it might come in useful, and it would be nice to have a computer that will last many years. I expect my VR use case might be a bit odd, as I only ever expect I would want to use two or three VR programs. I'd kinda like to try Beat Saber, but despite looking like a lot of fun, I wouldn't be too fussed to never play it. Another program is VRChat, but I think the only compelling reason to use it is for a comparison experience, and the one or two of the communities of users there. I think that despite the number of users for VRChat growing, it's actually going to go into decline some time in the next three years. The reason for that, is that I expect Neos VR to replace it. Neos VR is what I expect I would spend the majority of my time using. It's marketed as a Metaverse engine, because it's essentially designed to put people into a VR environment and give them powerful tools to make things. It can be whatever you want it to be. What I think most people will use it for is social VR. But Neos VR has the ability to edit nearly everything you see without exiting, and I only expect this to get better, because from all that I've heard, Neos VR is one of those applications that will continue to be developed indefinitely. There is already a strong community of creators using Neos as a platform to create things. Neos has a visual programming system, which has allowed users to create games, tools, and interactive environments. This is what I want to use Neos for. I'm a little bit out-of-my-mind enthusiastic for Neos, so please bear with me… To me, its the coolest thing since I learned to read. It is, in my opinion, the end goal of VR technology. Have you ever heard of Second Life? Imagine that, but done right. There is even a currency you can use to buy and sell things with, which I believe is based on the cryptocurrency Etherium. And there is a content ID system and virtual marketplace planned for people to use for buying and selling what they make. When I look at the updates since its launch, they've been frequent and significant. I'm pretty sure that the developers are working on Neos as a full time job. Did I mention that it's free? It's supported entirely through donations. The only reason I think it hasn't replaced VRChat right now, is because its desktop mode is currently still just a leftover development tool from the early days of its development, if I understand correctly, and doesn't fully support everything. But like many things, a proper desktop mode is somewhere on the roadmap. And pretty soon if I had to guess, as the development team have been focusing on usability and new user experience updates recently. I think that once Neos has a desktop mode, and slightly better new user experience, there will no longer be a barrier for adoption by VRChat users. My reasoning is, VRChat is also exclusively a social VR game, and roughly half the users play without any VR. So if a VR user wants to use Neos as a social VR game, they need to convince their friends to use it too. But if the desktop mode is terrible, roughly half their friends won't be able to play. Which means Neos isn't a good place to hang out with your friends. But that changes once Neos supports desktop users fully. Creating things and social VR aren't the only things people are interested in Neos for. There have been several educational institutions exploring Neos as a tool for teaching. One interesting example I saw was a geology teacher creating a world in Neos to provide a better alternative to field trips. He had a working versions of the geological survey tools used in the field, recreated in Neos. He even imported a high poly count 3D scan of a large rock, to demonstrate how to do field work. Another interesting use of Neos was by a town in Germany or Austria-I can't remember which, sorry-that was planning to build a bridge over a river, but they needed to vote between three different designs. So someone decides to recreate the bridge and surrounding area in Neos, and hold an event in the town where residents could come in and look at the choices in VR. This lead to a pretty big turnout, and according to a previous survey, it actually changed people's votes, because the bridges looked different as 2D images compared to 3D, and some problems were spotted in 3D that weren't noticed as 2D illustrations. I thought that was pretty cool when I heard about it… But uh… I've been letting this get just a bit too long, so… If anyone wants to hear more, you can ask me, I'll probably respond if like, 2 years haven't passed since I posted this comment or something. Or you can look up stuff on your own. The creator, cofounder, and main programmer of Neos "Frooxius" has a KZbin channel that they post Neos VR related content to, like news on updates, recorded live streams from the official Twitch channel, and stuff related to other miscellaneous stuff like contests. Actually, they recently held a contest called the MMC which has videos on winners' entries posted separately from the rest of the video recording of the judging process. But like I just implied, the other entries are visible as part of a two part, extremely long video post. If you're looking for examples of what can be made in Neos, that's a good place to look. That full length, two part post is easily over 12 hours of footage combined though. I watched all of it, but it took me several days where I had to take breaks. No regrets! So that's it. Sorry if I went completely off topic… It has been happening a lot to me lately when something happens to drift too near the figurative gravity well of VR and Neos.

So glad for how well the AMD drivers have been intergrated in the Linux kernel. Attempts to use nvidia drivers mostly resulted in black screens upon rebooting the system after driver install. For AMD, it was set it and forget it. Just wish stock had been in more ample supply and purchasing a new card wasn't as difficult as finding a virgin at an orgy.

This is exactly why I will always stick with AMD when it comes to Linux and gaming everything just works!

6800 xt only appeared for 5 seconds in italy, but they where out of stock immediatly. 6800 was all they had, but i was lucky enough to catch a 5800x as they threw a few cpus in the sale. Frankly 6800 xt appears a paper launch as VEGA VII, only to showcase their progress to stock market. It looks both on NVIDIA and AMD are racing on paper, flexing for stock market, rather than selling what they can realistically deliver to the masses...

I think it could be a very enjoyable hour to watch a conversation between Anthony from LTT and Wendell from Level1.

First off thanks for these types of Linux reviews. I noticed you have an Intel NUC 9 Extreme in the background and that's what I'm running right now. Do you have any recommendations on video cards for the Intel NUC 9 Extreme that work out of the box for Fedora 33?

I have been more excited about these cards coming out than any hardware in 5 years
