Previously, I didn't care so much about the amount of video memory because I just played 1080 until I got a crash on Hogwarts lecagy with my 3070 TI. Yups.. GPU can actually still get more than 60 fps with RT on, but the game always crashed after 5 minutes. Then I saw the video memory utilization is 7500 mB, or near the maximum available. At the first time the game is running, it only uses around 4-5 GB of video memory, then increases up to 7.5 GB before it crashes. Then I try with my RX6800XT 16GB, the game using video memory around 11-12GB. So for my next card, the amount of video memory becomes more important in consideration.
@ziokalco3 күн бұрын
And many games (hogwarts included) lower things like textures automatically in an attempt to not crash. 3070-3070ti where already known to have little VRAM, some reviewers managed to predict that despite 8gb of VRAM where enough to max pretty much everything, that would no longer be the case once consoles moved the bar. I'm really jealous of people that never encounter any driver issue with Radeon. I've had my RX 5700 (by XFX) for 5 years. Bought it during the cryptomining boom for about $400. Let's just say that it has given me a very inconsistent experience. It's a fantastic 1080p card. It runs cool, quiet, and very power efficient. Plenty of pros. I would've loved to sing AMD's praises. But the one & only (and biggest) con of it is that it just loves to crash at random. Emphasize on "random." Sometimes I could play for dozens of hours with no crash whatsoever. But sometimes it could crash every 15 minutes. I played tons of Monster Hunter World/Rise. I swear to god, the crash tally of just those two games combined is in the hundred. I couldn't replicate the crashes. They just happen when they want to. I've literally tried everything. Believe me, I've had 5 years to troubleshoot. Underclock, undervolt, disabling XMP, reinstalling drivers a thousand times, disabling settings in Adrenalin, limiting fps, changing power supply, motherboard, RAM, & CPU. Nothing fix it. I was so desperate. I finally got fed up and replaced my GPU. I was considering getting a RX 6800. I even almost bought one (about $300-ish used). It was a decent deal, that's why I even considered it. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the seller deleted the ad cuz someone else got to it first. So I ended up getting a RTX 3080 instead weeks later ($310 used, great deal imo). Divine intervention perhaps? Had it for a while now. Zero GPU crash. So, it's safe to say that I'm not going for team red anytime soon. Not because I'm all in on team green now, but having endured all those random crashes for 5 years has made me so jaded and very cautious of Radeon. Maybe there's just something wrong with my card specifically. Who knows. I'm not rich. I can't take any chances when buying expensive stuffs like these. When I spend my money, I want it to just work. I don't want to gamble.
@RATechYT3 күн бұрын
Given you've tried so many things, the only reason for the crashes that I can think of could be the GPU being faulty. $310 for a 3080 is a great deal though!

Having worked with about every 6000 series GPU I would make a couple recommendations. Undervolt - The 6800 from what I understand can run stable around 900 mV, you may have to test + 50 to get it perfectly stable. This will drop the power usage 30-40 watts, running a little cooler, and more then likely result in more stable clocks, all without having to crank that power slider to max(which is still an option if you want to crank up Mhz). GPU Ram - 6000 series cards LOVE ram speed & better timings. On all of the non 50 variants I set the ram to +100 and set Faster Timing. As long as its stable this will result in 3 - 6 FPS jump on its own. Sometimes you can only get one of these to work, in this case you will have to test if the +100 or the faster timing works better for your card. Mhz - In your testing the card is running very cool, I think I saw a max of 65c, and if you undervolt that is going to go down some more. You have head room to get more speed out of the card for sure. This is an area that is tricky and why I mention it last. You have to find the sweet spot, too little Mhz you leaving performance untapped, too much and you are generating extra heat and power draw for nothing. On my 6900xt 2450 gets me a 22000 time spy score, pushing it further only resulted in a loud more power hungry card and no gains, it ran stable at nearly 2700 Mhz but this was pulling 330 watts compared to my sweet spot settings which only pulls about 260, I think my score went up about 2%, not worth it. Ball parking I would guess 2250 min - 2350 max, 2100 ram speed with Fast Timings, 950 mV. With these settings the power slider might not even make a difference in performance but I would test it to be 100%.

Not needed for the GTX1080 and 60hz monitor but it will resell much better in this next year when a 7600 gets pushed down to the garage pc. $30 to upgrade isn’t bad but not likely to benefit you as it’s a standard 5000 to 5000 change and next to no performance gain. Results should be a little higher for most viewers. My factory clock speed for XFX swift was 2304mhz vs 2150mhz or lower that the creator's card is running at. I overclocked my GPU to 2375 that way the full undervolt offset applies. At 2400 mhz to 2475 mhz it starts to ignore undervolting and at 2500 mhz and above it completely ignores the undervolt and runs at full voltage.

The 6800 XT seems like a better card vs. the 7700 XT and is a much better card than the 4060 ti or 3070 ti. Having more vram than the 7700 XT is likely still going to be very useful in the future. The 3070 ti is NOT giving you the best of both worlds at 320 USD. The 8GB of vram is a huge limitation, and the better ray tracing performance of the 3070 ti is not a great selling point given that ray tracing is likely to exceed the vram capacity on it in a lot of games, and it's also just not really a powerful enough card to expect to be able to run ray tracing in most games with reasonable performance and reasonable settings.

You're right. The 6800xt is 10-30% faster in most gaming and productivity scenarios and has 16gb instead of 12gb ram, but lacks AI hardware. I like maxing out my textures, and I don't really use upscaling technology, so I went with the 6800xt. Anything above 7700xt outperforms it of course. I'm not too familiar with the 4060ti or 3070ti. Also increase Infinity Fabric by overclocking your ram with 3600MTs would be 1800MHz Infinity Fabric. On am4 3600MTs is the fastest and you would need better quality parts to go faster. Ryzen 7000, 8000, 9000 Infinity Fabric is 2000MHz and Ryzen 9000 is the fastest. You would be fine with a Ryzen 5 7600 or Ryzen 7 7700.

the 3070 ti has an abnormaly high power consumption and just 8 gb of memory, so it's ray tracing will be useless in most modern games, not very worth it in my opinion, the 4060 ti also just has 8 gb and is way slower than the rx 6800 at raster, the 7700 xt has equal performance but 12 gb and consumes more power in most games, it has better ray tracing but amd still sucks on that regard and no one using radeon gpus should care about rt, unless you really want av1 the rx 6800 is by far the best pick here
@RATechYT3 күн бұрын
The 7700 XT is the one that makes more sense for gaming in that price range. The 3070 Ti and 4060 Ti were only included if you need a GPU for 3D rendering, video editing and what not.
@mungojerrie863 күн бұрын
Yeah mate, for once I'll have to disagree regarding the 3070 (Ti) recommendation outside of very niche known use cases. 8GB VRAM was tragic in this performance segment back in 2021 and in late 2024 it's just a bad joke. 3070 (Ti) can routinely lose in tray tracing to 6800 because of elevated VRAM requirements with RT on. Shouldn't be even a consideration outside of 1080p gaming in my not so humble opinion.
@RATechYT2 күн бұрын
The 16 GB RX 6800 is a great GPU as I mentioned in the conclusion, but when the 7700 XT with 12 GB of VRAM (which is still plenty) is cheaper and is overall better in other aspects as well, it's hard for me to recommend the RX 6800, unless it's like $50 cheaper than where it currently is. The 7700 XT is my main recommendation over the RX 6800 for gaming purposes as I said at 12:11, at $350 I don't think there's a better graphics card for gaming right now. When it comes to recommended Nvidia cards, they are mainly for those who care more about productivity and don't care about playing games as much, we both know that Nvidia cards are better when it comes to work so I thought I'd include those. I agree that nowadays 12 GB of VRAM is the minimum you want to have if you're going to be maxing out the settings even at 1080p, recent games are extremely demanding memory wise, but if you're buying an 8 GB card for work, it's not like you won't be able to play games at all now. Thankfully graphics settings aren't locked, you can just drop a few settings with the 3070 Ti in memory heavy titles to not exceed your VRAM, playing at ultra is unnecessary anyways. Unless your goal is to be able to play the most modern titles with everything maxed out, the vast majority of games out there are still playable with the 3070 Ti, which, once again, has other advantages such as better RT performance (I agree, in titles where you won't hit a VRAM limit), video editing, 3D rendering, streaming and so on, so personally I think it would be much easier to recommend the RX 6800 if it was $30-40 cheaper new and used. You don't have to agree with me, that's just my opinion.
@mungojerrie862 күн бұрын
@@RATechYT It's alright, we are all grown ups and can agree or disagree across different points. I don't disagree regarding productivity because I simply don't really know but I do hear here and there that limited VRAM can be an issue during editing, rendering and such. As for pricing, it varies greatly depending on region. The 7700 XT doesn't look bad at all though below MSRP, especially if AV1 recording support is important. I might be very harsh on 8 GB cards outside of entry level gaming because VRAM limitation is likely to necessitate a compromise with two most important (in my opinion at least) graphics settings - resolution and texture quality.
@RATechYT2 күн бұрын
@@mungojerrie86 Sure thing, you have to make a decision depending on the pricing in your region. The majority of my viewers are from the U.S., so I go off of U.S. prices. Nvidia should've increased the VRAM of their GPUs a long time ago. 8 GB graphics cards have been around for a decade.

@@diablosv36 I agree with the VRAM part, nowadays 12 GB is the minimum you want to have if you're going to be playing at higher presets, however since the 3070 Ti holds an advantage in productivity workloads, delivers better RT performance (at least in titles where the VRAM isn't the limiting factor, which is still the vast majority), has better upscaling and frame generation implementations and what not, I feel like the RX 6800 (currently can be found at $330 or above) should be at least at the same price as the 3070 Ti (is generally at $300 and above).
