ALL AMD cards besides the rx 6600 are horribly overpriced relative to their market demand. The 6600 performs like a 3060 and costs as much as the 3050. It is the only AMD gpu with sales that compete with a similarly priced nvidia counterpart. However, it's 45% faster than a 3050 and is the same price. Compared to a 4080, the 7900xtx should be priced at $750 for it to sell well. Similarly, the 7900xt needs to be $600, 7800xt at $450. They'd make less profit but actually sell gpus. This seems like Lisa su is colluding with Jensen Huang to raise prices of the whole market. They've just stopped bothering with competing with consoles in terms of value.

@@RadialSeeker113If the GPU market share was easily influenced by just having better value products, we wouldn't be in a situation where Nvidia holds over 80% of the market to begin with. Everyone complains about Nvidia prices, but still winds up buying Nvidia despite AMD generally delivering better performance per dollar. Also, no shit, AMD is a corporation, it is literally legally obligated to post profit to shareholders. Let's suppose they double their current market share by cutting the profits they get from each individual purchase by 60%. Do you need me to explain to you why they'd rather avoid that?

I wish we could rate the quality of the RT implementation and upscaling implementation in individual games too. I know ratchet and clank had fuzzy looking RT shadows which didn't look much better than raster while cyberpunk looks like a completely different game with RT reflections. Some RT games really just don't look better than raster which helps the xtx while some FSR implementations are truly awful which helps the 4080.
@redeye259
@redeye259 Жыл бұрын
That would be a great metric, there aren’t many games out that justify the use of RT in terms of improving the image quality. Cyberpunk with RT is mind blowing, feels great to be able to play it at over 100 FPS on a 4080
@shanks2872

Eh XTX does RT great except on Nvidia focused titles like Cyberpunk so ur point doesn't really make sense. RT is a joke, and Nvidia likes to pretend it is way more important than it is and for less money and more Vram the XTX is the better choice (IMO). I used to like Nvidia a lot but they're trying to scam you at this point.
@plasmahvh
@plasmahvh Жыл бұрын
@@shanks2872 no it doesn't. it does well on software RT (Lumen) not on hardware RT. Cyberpunk is one of the most hardware agnostic games. It's just that PT is unusable on AMD cards. AMD's solution to RT is to use the same shader units to compute both RT and Raster. NVIDIA on the other hand has dedicated RT cores. So NVIDIA cards have better RT at the cost of raster. And they believe that's the right choice. I assume they will do everything they can to push Path Tracing with their market share. XTX has 4070 levels of pure RT which is quite embarrassing for a flagship card. In the end it all comes down to who wins, path tracing or lumen. If path tracing wins AMD is fucked hard, if lumen wins NVIDIA lost at least 8 years of RT development (IN GAMING). I hope that PT wins cause it simply looks better but consoles are way too weak for it. Maybe next gen consoles

@@plasmahvh I still have to disagree on the Amd is fucked part, they can switch to developing RT while Nvidia will have lost tons of money. While you could say 4070 levels of RT is embarrasing (I disagree), you could say the same about the vram on the 4070 and ti. We are starting to see more Vram usage on games and it won't go down in the future. I still believe Amd is the better choice for the average gamer since they do care about their older cards and they perform very well.

With my 3090, I have really felt for a while that I am on the cusp of having the 4K Ray Traced performance be at the level I want in titles like Cyberpunk and the Witcher 3. I've had my eye on the 7900xtx for a minute now, but after seeing this it seems that both the 7900xtx and the 4080 still fall just short in more than a few titles with RT, much like my 3090 does. 4090 is the only video card that will do high settings 4k ray tracing, and it won't run it at a super high frame rate even then. That is your only option if you want to go this route. Hi Steve, question regarding Forza Horizon 5. You said that you did the RT test at the Extreme preset, however the preset only enables High RT - which isn't active in races or free roam, only in ForzaVista and photo mode. To get in-game RT reflections you have to manually raise the RT level to either Ultra (half resolution RT, your car only) or Extreme (full resolution RT, your car only). Are these figures using High RT, or did you raise it to Ultra or Extreme?
@Hardwareunboxed

My 7900 XTX has been going pretty well for me. Gaming at 4K largely is good enough I don't need to use upscaling, but even then FSR is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. DLSS is obviously better, but it's not so dramatically better I couldn't play a game that had FSR instead and not DLSS (they should all be there, not advocating for vendor locked features). Maybe once AMD is winding down development of frame gen they could focus on utilizing their AI cores to further enhance their 7000 series cards in FSR and produce DLSS quality upscaling to effectively eliminate the largest downside they have currently? With that being said, DF had a good point that due to DLSS having effectively a similar quality upscaling image at about one more notch down on the presets vs FSR ( DLSS Balanced = FSR Quality), it gives an even larger bump in performance to Nvidia.

Yep, GPU benchmarking have become extremely complex in recent years with various upscaling techs that differ substantially in actual quality they offer despite using similar abbreviation, as in with DLSS/XeSS Quality vs FSR Quality offering comparable performance one to another, but image quality differs. Add to that RT performance that can vary drastically from game to game, in one AMD can be dramatically slower than competitors, but in another offer roughly similar level of performance or even ever so slightly higher. Now throw in FG/FM features for good measure and VRAM capacities and oh well... I'am pretty involved user/gamer, so i can find my way around it, but if as a reviewer your baseline is a clueless customer, then you have one hell of a job in front of you to try and convey as objective picture to a customer as possible.

I agree, it's much harder now to objectively convey the experience consumers will end up with because image quality is so hard to quantify. All upscalers have their pros and cons, but I think a lot of people would say DLSS and XeSS have a healthy edge, especially in motion (which is pretty important in gaming). There's so much to think about now. I remember reading a comment the other day where someone said they could increase frame rate from 30 to 60 with framegen and heard that the latency was negligible. I can't even blame people, there are just so many things to be aware of lol.

They tend do just a raster vs raster comparison with upscaling to make them even. Eventually once AMD gets their feature sets out more, they may do a more full comparison with full feature sets. No doubt I would take a 4080 currently and have a smoother experience than what I could do with a XTX. FSR3 is still in its infancy, but it seems many have taken a liking to it, even calling it a DLSS3 killer. Once they implement it more broadly, then we can get a more accurate comparison as current GPUs aren't just raster vs raster anymore, as evidenced by the epiphany of AMD users who got a taste of FSR3 and are now completely fine with fake frames as it makes a huge difference in user experience.

It absolutely dominates in everything else, and the 24gb RAM and HDMI 2.1 make it more future proof. This is the problem with those buying AMD, ignorance. Tensor cores are used for matrix multiplication enhancing AI. In the case of the RTX GPUs tensor cores are used for DLSS. RT is done through seperate RT cores. It's all dedicated hardware for each workload that can run in parallel with the shader cores. You don't have future proofing as you already have poor RT performance, poor quality SS and poor quality frame generation. AMD are good if you want to save money and restrict yourself to legacy modes.

RTX 4080 does have HDMI 2.1, too. For Gamers, there _might not be_ any meaningful difference between 16GB and 24GB VRAM, within next few years. Also, since 7900 XTX's RT speed is already just decent, in few years it'll be classified as slow in RT. Still, in non-RT Gaming, *if* 24GB does give some benefit and *if* rasterizing speed is still OK, then 24GB would be an advantage. Perhaps more likely scenario is that when more than 16GB VRAM is meaningful difference, both cards are consired slow. Time will tell... Right now, at least video editing can benefit from 24GB VRAM. RTX 4080 has lower Power consumption. Especially in multi-monitor and video playback (unless this is somehow fixed today). One advantage for RTX 4080 is that it supports all current DLSS versions + AMD's FSR + they both should support Intel XeSS (DP4A). One potential advantage for RTX 4080 _might be_ its better, or at least less bad, AI support (currently DLSS offers better image quality at lower resolutions vs. AMD's non-AI solution). Of course, both could be classified as superbad just in few years. If GPU Rendering (Blender etc.) is important, then RTX 4080 is far superior choice, as far as I know. Due to OptiX/CUDA. For most PC Gamers on this planet, both cards would be a massive upgrade. And way over their budget. So, kind of Lamborghini vs. Ferrari problem.

While VRAM is useful, it is the memory bus width advantage that will really give the XTX an advantage in the long term. 256 bit to 384 bit is a colossal difference, particularly at higher resolutions.

But as the newer games evolve, the memory bandwith will be a less important advantage, just like more VRAM because both cards will become only 1440p cards and even today in 1440p the 256 bit vs. 384 bit at this resolution doesn't really do much.

Glad to see AMD has greatly improved drivers for these MCM variants of RDNA 3. And thanks Steve for doing this very detailed testing. LOTS of data there for people to look at and it's good you waited to make something like this because this is about where performance will stay for both Nvidia and AMD, though I'm sure with AMD there'll be two or three games that get decent improvements. It just takes AMD a long time to get their drivers up to high quality and RDNA 3 had to be harder with both MCM and non-MCM GPUs.

I thought HUB usually included power data, am I imagining that? Anyway, VERY interesting results, that still leave a big question mark hanging on what games you really intend to play. The 7900XTX I feel will last a lot longer with it's 24GB of VRAM and wider bus, but when you're talking about spending $900-$1000 on a GPU (I hate this timeline) another $150-$200 on top for Ray-tracing performance could make sense if that's the kind of games you're playing.

Usually, but I imagine for this you can just go back to the original 7900 XTX review. Power likely hasn't changed much. 4080 is still probably consuming a bit less power. And yeah, very interesting, they tie or the 7900 XTX barely wins on at least the rasterization comparison, but for every game benchmarked that I would play, the 4080 ties or wins. And there's other games where the 7900 XTX absolutely spanks, but I don't intend to play any of them. 4080 seems like a better choice for me, assuming black friday has some decent prices (I also hate this timeline)

If you look at selected games like cyberpunk, you can clearly see that the difference is as large as it was with RDNA2 vs RTX3000. In fact, it seems neither AMD or Nvidia have really improved ray tracing performance all that much, it seems more likely that theyre holding back to bring a bigger upgrade with RDNA4 and RTX5000. The reason for why youre still seeing only a 10% overall performance difference I believe is down to the fact that recent titles like Jedi survivor or UE5 games like Fortnite only put a 10% RT performance tax on the performance unlike cyberpunk whose workload is way more taxing. And likely because the workload is so light, the difference between both GPU architectures is also only about 10%. I'm not sure though whether this is down to the RT workloads in those games just being significantly lighter than Cyberpunk or if maybe the workload is more equally optimized for both GPUs or if its both of those answers at once

It's really great to see that in your average, typical Raytracing-enabled workload is finally starting to tax the Radeons less, relatively speaking, and bringing the RT-enabled results a little bit closer together. On launch this fight was basically "XTX comparable in raster but significantly worse in RT", now it's much more of a "Trades blows across the board" scenario. It's clear that AMD really has improved the RT capabilities with RDNA3 now. It'll be interesting seeing more console ports / multi-platform games optimized for consoles come into the PC space as well, since they'll be optimized for Radeon's RT capabilities. I think RDNA3's raytracing capabilities will age much better than many people have expected, and the gap will likely close even more visibly with RDNA4. Also, I really hope that AMD comes out with something comparable to Ray Reconstruction ASAP.

It looks to me like it's largely dependent on how many rays the render engine uses. I've read of a CP2077 mod that reduces the number of rays that supposedly bolsters Radeon performance by a large margin without impacting image quality too drastically. I do know that Radeon's RT implementation is much better at processing rays-in-flight than ray intersections (afaik their RT pipeline can do 4 rays in flight OR 1 intersection...) which would definitely bog down pretty hard when calculating too many rays at once. It'd be nice if this was something we could adjust in games...

Of course there need to be titles like Cyberpunk in which Nvidia has an advantage - because they do RT a generation longer and CDPR seem Cyberpunk wanting to be also a tech demo like Crysis was. In other titles like Spiderman or Hogwarts the AMD card delivers RT performance. But what else is there? You also get encoding support for streaming and rendering. VR is also possible, headsets like Quest 2 being well supported. A good driver support... Path Tracing being the only current one ... which only runs half good on 4090. But other than that I don't see any interesting "extra features" with Nvidia. It was this way like 2 gens before ... but AMD caught up quite well.

@@hassosigbjoernson5738Although Nvidia is much better at streaming as well as in virtual reality. The 7900xtx in virtual reality performs significantly below. One point that Nvidia has is that it is much more compatible with software to work with.

@@hassosigbjoernson5738 1.DLSS has far better visual quality than FSR especially on presets below quality,. 2.RT Performance diference is very big between those cards, yes sometimes they might match but some games utilize very little RT so that's where the smaller gaps come from generally.Now with RayReconstruction AMD is gonna be behind with RT Visual quality on top of performance. 3. VR support on AMD is shit 4. DLAA which i don't think AMD has any equivalent for i use it in Baldur's Gate 3 right now and it makes game look significantly sharper and overall better looking - it might not mean much in the grand scheme but it is example. 5. There's also tech that enchances video quality but i can't recall what it's called right now, i recall it's enabled in nvidia control panel. 6. Frame Generation - i would mark this one as undecided at the moment we simply don't know enough to say if FSR3 can match DLSS3 but from what i can see in Immortals of Aveum, nvidia has superior latency when using their tech vs FSR3. It might get better but i don't judge on possible future updates but what's here and now. Those are just examples of the top of my head. Whether you care about those things enough to pay extra for them is personal decision but nvidia does give something extra for their higher prices. I think in general if someone is spending 1000$ (which is absurd amount of money for a GPU already ) for 7900XTX then most people would prefer to spend that 10-15% extra and get the best possible experience. And i think market shares reflect that. But as i said it's always personal choice. I've got 4080 and don't regret my purchase at all, the only issue with the card i've is that it's so powerful even my new 13600k can't cut it in some instances ;)

@@hassosigbjoernson5738🤦11% or worse drop off in RT at 4K when you're sub 60fps is not good on such an expensive card. AMD have made a card that's perfectly decent at 1080p or 1440p for RT. The problem is it's a 4K card🤦. The iffy RT perf at higher resolution is why I bought a 4080 I specifcally wanted it for 4K and the raster perf is generally similar enough to not be an issue.

I've owned a 7900xtx for over a year and I just bought a 4080 non super for $780.00 to replace it. I've had so many driver timeouts and the power draw is crazy sitting @ 350-370w with spikes over 500w. The idle is also 80-90w. I love the card and it's powerful but not for me. I am going to miss the 24g of vram as I play mostly in 4k.
