A coalition of environmental experts and specialized agencies, led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), was seen conducting radiation inspections in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, as part of the ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating Palisades Fire. Working alongside the EPA, the U.S. Coast Guard National Strike Force Pacific Strike Team (PST), the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), and ACTenviro utilized the Ludlum Model 19 Radiation Monitor to assess properties for potential contamination and hazardous materials.
The U.S. Coast Guard's Pacific Strike Team, recognized for its expertise in hazardous substance response and emergency management, played a crucial role in the inspections, applying its specialized skills to ensure the safety of affected properties. Meanwhile, the EPA worked to mitigate environmental and public health risks in accordance with its mission to protect communities from hazardous pollutants. The DTSC conducted property assessments to identify contamination concerns and toxic hazards, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding California's residents and ecosystems from dangerous substances. Republic Services Fire Hazmat, a leading waste management and hazardous materials organization, also contributed to the cleanup efforts by facilitating the proper disposal and recycling of fire-damaged debris. ACTenviro, a nationally recognized environmental and hazardous waste management firm, provided expertise in handling and mitigating the effects of hazardous materials in fire-impacted areas.
The inspections come in the wake of the Palisades Fire, which ignited on January 7, 2025, and quickly escalated into a disaster fueled by intense Santa Ana winds and prolonged drought conditions. The fire scorched over 23,000 acres, destroyed more than 12,000 structures, and led to the mandatory evacuation of approximately 150,000 residents from Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and parts of the San Fernando Valley. At least five people lost their lives, and many others sustained injuries. Firefighting efforts were hindered by extreme winds, which grounded aerial support and intensified the fire’s spread.
While recent rainfall has helped contain the blaze, it has also introduced new risks, including mudslides and debris flow in the already devastated region. With evacuation orders lifted as of January 27, recovery efforts have ramped up, focusing on debris removal, utility restoration, and environmental safety assessments. The presence of these environmental agencies underscores the importance of ensuring that the region is not only rebuilt but also free of hazardous contamination as the community begins the long process of recovery.
