In this video is shown the effect of a beta radiation (Strontium-90 source) on CCD camera in a cell phone. Radiation is shown like spots in a dark background. This effect is used in some Android applications to "measure" radiation.

For anyone wondering, the white spots on the camera are extremely short-wave and powerful energy bursts that makes the camera believe that its very powerful light, which in fact its not. The reason the human eye cant see that, is because the eye can only absorb and detect photons and only that is perceived as "light", which those white spots arent photons.

All electromagnetic energy travels via photons, that's not the reason we can't see it, our eyes and brain just have much better filters than digital camera sensors. If you focus more on the, quote on quote, 'noise' of your eyes (without closing them) you can actually see tiny transparent things going at random literally on your eyes. Though, it is just an assumptions that appears logical to me and non of that is proven. You can also see such thing with closed eyes but it is harder

It's just because TV's have become ever more digital and already older tube televisions had a blue screen for no signal, that you don't see it anymore, but among ATV (HAM-radio) fans multiple circuits exist to 'bypass' this behaviour, either because it keeps the TV 'awake' for looking for signal, or because it just surpasses the threshold where the TV thinks there is signal.

@@ZA-mb5di CCD is an abbreviation for 'Charge Coupled Device'. Light is transferred as an electrical charge in such integrated circuits. Compared to CMOS-sensors they are relatively energy-hungry, but they are still very prevalent in astrophotography as imaging sensors as they are more sensitive than CMOS-sensors. As it is a charge that can be 'read' by processing electronics behind the sensor, this is why CCD's do not suffer from the rolling shutter effect, where CMOS-sensors that are NOT compensated for this effect, suffer from weird skewed trains/car and other fast moving objects as the sensors' pixels have to be read out in time to form a picture, where a CCD can just be read out at once, as the charge will stay there until it is processed.

You could totally use this to visually measure the radiation, and you could determine the flux by knowing the size of the photo chip. Or it could be the lens size? It is probably the chip

There is more to it. The sensors signal is amplified both on the analog level and digital level. That causes the usual noise you'd expect, e.g. thermal noise and cosmic background radiation. Despite looking fairly sensitive, it really isn't. Not every particle that hits the sensor will actually produce a noticeable effect. Furthermore, each impact of a particle can cause damage to the sensor over time, through a game of chance.

@@AnnaVannieuwenhuyse maybe for just detecting radiation with the required energy to be visible when hitting the photo chip. Or is it too just random chance that it's picked up as input?

@@ohwell2163 since there's other things in the optical path, there's no sure fire way to know whether you can detect these particles. There's much more effective dedicated tools.

Why are all the dots white? The image sensor in the phone will have lots of pixels, but each one can only detect either red, green, or blue. So I would expect to see multi-coloured dots.
@accueil750
@accueil750 5 ай бұрын
either video compression from the phone or youtube causing this, or the pixels being blown out completely and going white (idk how to explain but even if its one color the pixel registers such light it shows white) i think its youtube comrpession though, the lines look colored when paused
